Who's ready for another war?!

When: Saturday May 31, 2014- 8:30 a.m. set up and geek out, foam flies at 9:00. We usually end at about 1- 2:00 p.m.

Where: Murray Park soccer fields. They’re in the east section of Murray Park. This section only has road access via Vine St. If the road connects from State St. to Vine, you need to take the next park entrance to the east. It’s the one that dead ends inside the park.

(Credit for the photo goes to shmmee)

We generally meet in the parking lot or near the huge hill. If the area is occupied, we will still meet there, and decide on an alternate area. The park is huge, so we're bound to be able to find a vacant area to nerf in.

Misc. Info:
*There are restrooms near the play area.
*MUST BE 13 OR OLDER TO ATTEND! This is for safety. You have to be 13 to be a member of this site anyway... Depending on age, we may be willing to allow people under 13 to play, but they must have a parent or guardian present the whole time. Please PM/ email shmmee or I in advance to discuss this though.
*Parents are encouraged to come watch and express any concerns they may have. You will be pressured to join us though!
What to bring:
*EYE PROTECTION! Eye protection must be worn at all times by all participants when foam is flying.

*WATER! Don’t get dehydrated. There is a drinking fountain at the park, but don’t count on it in case it isn’t working.

*Food- Not required, but highly recommended. Most of us bring something to snack on between rounds.

*Primary (I recommend more since it’s always nice to have different options and backups in case one or more of them crap out on you.)

*Pistol/ Secondary

*Blaster that shoots ~35 feet or less for the awfuls round.

*Darts! All darts must be padded! NO EXPOSED METAL/HOT GLUE! No weight restrictions- but be reasonable. Please make your darts easily distinguishable as your own so everyone gets their darts back. We have darts to lend people, though it would be nice if we could get at least some of our regulars to make some. Our supply is shrinking...

* Friends! More participants= more fun! Please try to bring enough blasters/ darts for yourself as well as the people you are bringing with you. We don’t mind lending stuff out, but we only have so many.

*Loaner blasters and darts! I have some loaner blasters and darts, but it’s always better to have extra than not enough. This would be greatly appreciated.

*Your B+ game and a good attitude! We Nerf for the fun of it- not the win. We’ve never had a problem with bad sportsmanship, so I’m not too worried about this. Just don’t be a douche and have fun.

*Stuff you’ve been working on to show off!

*Cover! Mobstacles and similar items that can be used as cover would be appreciated. I currently don't have any, but I'll try to get some made eventually.

Blaster restrictions:...are currently on a case-by-case basis. Just don’t bring anything you wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of.

Rules:
There are a few things I've noticed at wars in the past that I'd like to address to improve everyone's experience.

*Please ask before touching/ using/ borrowing anyone's blasters or darts. They will most likely say yes anyway. Also, please be respectful of others' things if they do allow you to use them. We put a lot of time/ money/ effort into our blasters.

*Even if you were using someone else's darts, please stay and dart sweep with us. You shoot darts, you help pick them up. Please don't dawdle when it's time to dart sweep either. If shmmee or I say it's time to dart sweep, come dart sweep.

*Please follow the rules of the game, ask for clarification if you need it, and have fun.

*Shmmee is the ultimate and founding S.L.A.N.G. member. What he says goes.
PLEASE READ:
We don't mind lending blasters/ darts to people. Though, please be aware (and make guests aware) that eventually, you will be expected to own and maintain your own blasters/ darts. We strive for modders in this group. One of the main reasons we have wars anyway is to see how our blasters measure up to others' and to learn from/ geek out with other people that obsess over the same hobby.

Confirmed Attendees:
Me
Shmmee
bex +5
Possible Attendees:
and735 (probably got his username wrong again :P )

So Who's in?

As Panda said, I don't think there is a way to fight gravity without a guaranteed loss. You could use magnets, but no one knows how those things work except the Mormons.

Or lasers. You should integrate some lasers into your Nerf darts. Problem solved.

I will be there. My name is Brian. I will be bringing my son and our Nerf blasters. We have a Rapid Strike CS-18, Triad, and Firestrike. I also received a Mattel BoomCo Twisted Spinner blaster yesterday from the UK that I will bring. We will have eye protection, sunscreen, snacks, and plenty of water. I am willing to gather supplies for mobstacles, if we can all pitch in some money. The Tarp and PVC ones look easy. $36.51 for 12 pack of tarps on Amazon. Curtain rings are $1 for 12. PVC is $2 for 5 ft lengths. 4 triangle shaped mobstacles would run about $65. Let me know if anyone can pitch in. I could probably talk my wife into letting me pay for a couple. Thanks.

Awesome! I look forward to meeting you and your son. I was planning on building some mobstacles this summer anyway, so I'd be happy to contribute to making more.

I've also been curious to try build to the same thing out of weed fabric. Its on a roll and about the right height.

We need some of this for our yard anyway. I will snag a roll when I go for the PVC. I will get the stuff ordered so we have it in time for the war.

Some other members of my family have expressed some interest. My brother and brother-in-law have some stock blasters. Is there enough loaner blasters that fire stefans for me to bring 4 people? My son probably won't come if I bring all these guys. My brother is engaged, so it would kind of be an unofficial bachelor's party. He is getting sealed in the LDS temple, so strippers are out. We might be able to get some to come out again. Let me know what you think guys. Thanks.

That sounds awesome! I'm sure we can come up with enough blasters - even we have to resort to blasters firing stock darts. (I don't think we will though) Just let us know how many people you can get to come, and we'll do our best to arm them. Best case scenario - they love it and will want to join us for other wars!

I recently provided 95% of arms and ammo for a 45 person war at a singles ward FHE night for my sister in law. Blasters may perform in varying degrees of awesome, but I absolutely think we can cover it. I even have a large group game type that works fantastically well with mixed performance blasters. BTW, the only real modification needed to make a blaster fire steffans is removing the peg from the barrel. Blasters with "smart AR (air restrictors) systems (ruff cut, triad, zombie cross bow...) depend on intact AR's for their auto- barrel select function, but it is possible to remove the peg without damaging the AR's - it's just more difficult.

That sounds awesome! How much do you want contributed for the mobstacles, and how many people are contributing? (I'm assuming it's just you shmmee and I at this point). (Unless you wanted to wait and discuss this with everyone at the war.)

We should get some gumdrops made! We do have a lot of stefans, but it would probably be good to stock up since this looks like it's going to be a high turnout war. (And plus, you'll need a ton for 'geddon anyway.)

It looks like I will be bringing about 5 guys. I think I could ask them to donate some money to the bachelor's party. Maybe $10 from you two with some stefans kicked in? I ordered the tarps. I will snag the shower rings, PVC, and barrier paper this weekend. Do the shower rings work for the top or do we need S-rings? I am also modding my 18 rd clip to take stefans. I am going to replace the stupid plastic rifled barrel with some brass tube in pvc or other plastic. Do you guys know what works best with flywheels? I got some trustfire batteries and I have a 3 cell Lipo. I think the Lipo will work best and easiest, so I will probably go that route. I have a red dot sight coming for it too. I even got a 35 round drum. I am going to attempt to make that stefan compatible as well. How long are the stefans that you guys make? I am really happy to find a group here. This seems so much better than paintball. Much cheaper too. Let me know if I am missing something. I am down to make gumdrops with you guys anytime. Just let me know when and where. Thanks.

5+you? That's awesome!
Drums are very difficult to steffanize. Straight clips are the way to go.

I like my Stefan to be 1.5" in total length, but that's all purely personal preference.

The only mobsticle I own is a tetrahedral built by a retired nerfer TaerKitty. I've never actually built any of my own. I've got quite a bit of weed cloth we can use, so hold off on that purchase.

I simply slap some trustfires in my rayven and spam stock darts, but a logo would probably be better. Our group kinda lacks an electronics guru.

My goto barrel materials are flo-guard-gold cpvc for spring powered blasters (the Lowe's on 9000s & ?00 East sells it) and petg tubing for air guns (that's a McMaster.com order). If its a flywheel blaster you want no contact with the dart after the fly wheels. Barrels are purely ascetic on fly wheel blasters.

I'm organizing a carpool to this years Gordon in California. The more people we can pack I. The value. The cheaper costs get. Might want to give that some thought too.

Cool, I can do that. We're currently a little short on stefans, but we're going to make a ton for shmmee's Armageddon trip, so we should be able to make some extras for you.

As shmmee said, flywheel blasters don't need barrels. You also may want to hold off on converting your mags to shoot stefans. We mostly use stock darts in our flywheel blasters, but I've also made myself some stefans that are the same length as stock darts, so I don't have to modify my mags. You'd also need to extend the dart pusher in your blaster to compensate for shorter darts if you went that route too. I end up needing to make more darts, (since some blasters use short stefans and the flywheel blasters require stock length darts) but I feel that it is worth it.

I like this thread. Our war threads usually die 2-3 days after I post them!

The rifling screws up some darts. They spin out with the back foam rotating around the dart head and go like 5 feet. I found some wider black tubing at Home Depot, but it is still half inch. I was planning to extend the dart pusher anyway because the lack of length causes jams sometimes. I looked at the drum conversion. It does look difficult so I will hold off. Can you modify stock darts to fly better? I didn't get any barrier paper. We had some at my house already. I am pretty good with electronics. I race RC cars and that requires some electrical skill. I have a really nice soldering station. My soldering skills are pretty good. Let's get together to make some stefans before the war. Thanks.

Sorry if I missed it earlier, but what blaster is this? That's interesting. Has the blaster been modified at all? I'd say that's either a dart problem, or a slightly defective blaster. Stock darts tend to change direction and fishtail easily, especially when shot out of high powered blasters. Having old batteries may make one flywheel spin slightly faster than the other as well, which can probably cause that problem. It could very well be the rifled barrel though.

The only method of modifying stock darts I've ever heard of is filling the tip with hot glue through the existing hole (found in streamline and elite darts). They perform much better, but they are also not war legal, so I only use them for testing. I did get the idea one day to do the same thing with silicone, which yielded the same positive benefits, while making the tip softer. I haven't consulted shmmee on this though, so we'd have to see if he thinks they are safe enough to use at a war. Just for troubleshooting purposes though, you may want to try this with a few darts and see if your problem persists.

I think it would be a good idea to make some darts before the war. Shmmee primarily hosts dart/ blaster making parties, so we'd have to see if he's available.

This is the rapidstrike cs-18. The rifling is stock in the barrel. I read the article here on rifling nerf darts as pointless. Boy is he right. I was thinking of dropping a bb in the rear of the dart with some putty or glue. That wouldn't affect the tip. I am going to be late to the war. I have a father sons camp out Friday night. I can be there at about 9:30. I hope that isn't a problem. I will send my crew on time with the materials. There should be 3or 4 there on time and two of us that are late.

That was a great war! I look forward to the next one. We had a great turnout, and we got in quite a few rounds. I really enjoyed having an older age group, since it's nice to play with people that are more responsible/ mature. I think one of the greatest parts of the war was when shmmee with his ultimator and me with my Titan shot at each other at the same time and shot each other's missiles in midair.

Also, thanks to bex, we now have a bunch of mobstacles!

I got sunburned and have some welts thanks to and735's PAS, but it was totally worth it. I'd say this is one of the best wars I've been to. I need to make sure I wear sunscreen, bring more soda, and fix the air conditioner in my car for the next one though. :P

I got a few good pics, but I don't want to post them until I get permission.

EDIT: I made a facebook group- send a request and shmmee or I will add you. I posted the pics there.
Here is the link: https://www.facebook...57136867811873/

If it doesn't work, just search for a closed group called "S.L.A.N.G. Salt Lake Area Nerf Geeks".

Thanks to the SLANG group for putting on an awesome war. It was great to get out with some organized games. I really can't wait for the next one because I will have a healthy leg. I will be working on extending the range of my Rapidstrike. I was running 7.4V. I need to remove some resistors to bump up to 11.1V. I also want to mess with the barrel material to remove that rifling. The long range blasters were very impressive. My brother and his friend loved it. I will definitely get my other brother and my brother-in-law out to the next war. If you need a tune-up before Armageddon, I would love to come out again. Let me know when you are planning on making stefans. I would really like to see that also. Any pics you want to throw up are fine with me.

Awesome! I had an awesome time nerfing with you and your group, and I'm glad you guys had fun. I'm not sure if shmmee will be able to come to a war this month (Since he's already going to Armageddon), but I'm planning on hosting one. I'm currently trying to fix a bunch of blasters so I'll have enough to loan out. I'll keep you posted on possible dates for that so we can hopefully pick one that works with your schedule.
