The Evolution of the flywheel motor.

The aftermath

Blue rings are after FIRST (10shots) test firing, I never fired this blaster once. When I saw what motors they had in them I immediatly started looking for one, it took almost 2 weeks and I went to 17 different walmart stores. I took the blaster apart the second I got it home. It took me another 2 weeks to find the motors I wanted. I put the project on hold to nerf in Cinci last weekend and gave away all my motors while down there, building the first superleggera for Twitch. His looks completely stock.

I do not have a lot of pics yet... it will come apart and go back together a few more times while I tinker.

here is my experimental trigger setup... it works better than expected so now I have to take it apart and wire it permanent.

Enjoy peeps!
Don

stockade mod looks good, what are the improvements from the larger motors vs upgraded small motors? FPS on a full rev, and ending FPS after 6 rounds at 2 shots/second? also, rpm and torque of the motor would be nice to know.

what are you using to power your stockade also?

also on a side note: superleggera means "super light" http://en.wikipedia....ki/Superleggera

so i'm going to ask if the stockade is heavier or lighter after this mod? my guess is heavier but i don't know how much trimming you've done with the rest of the blaster.

Actually superleggera although meaning super light, did not mean the car was actually lighter than its original counterpart. They were all basically racecars that the manufacturer put the largest engine they could fit into a chassis and then removed anything that was not necessary to make the car driveable.

Im using Mabuchi RC-280SA-2485.

I have no one to assist me in my area and every time I reach out to other nerfers for help I get shit on. I don't have a chronograph and everyone who does have a chronograph has already decided what motors are best and have no interest in anything different.

here is a quick vid. this is max rpm with just a tiny blip. Im running a 3s li-po pack because I accidently left my trustfires at Twitch's house over the weekend. I have a 3 18650 Li-Ion cells that I intend to integrate into the shell and make it pretty when I get more time. I just wanted to get some data out there hoping maybe I could get someone to try a set of 280s and collaborate with me on my project.

Thank you

Nice to see somebody else giving love to the Stockade.

I really like the 280 motor size, the flat pancakes were a disappointment when I opened the Stockade up. Of course, the largest downside to this blaster is the 10dart drum. If only you could squeeze those motors into a Stryfe eh?

This is a little project I finished a few months ago. The motors are Blade 180's, so not quite as beefy as yours, and propels darts up to 115fps; thanks to the limited battery tray and my refusal to invest in RC packs. Of course, I never bothered with an acceleration trigger; the other shortcoming of the Stockade.

Whats more, how did I miss this Cinci war?! I've been down there a few times, and done the jig with Twitch and his 'crew', but I guess they didn't like me enough to send another invite. And I'd be glad to have you reach out to me, I don't know exactly where 'Bum Fuck' is but we've got the Ohio part figured out; I'll try my hardest not to shit on you. I own a Chronograph, but I am thoroughly convinced that the 180 sized motor is the final word in Flywheel technology. They can fit universally inside a Stryfe, Hail-fire, Rapidstrike and Stockade(with a little tweaking) and max their muzzle velocities around 130fps. There is a theoretical limit to what flywheels can do, and I think I've found it.

I'd still love to chrono that thing, if for nothing than curiosities sake. Of course, it's completely possible that you'll break my perceived glass ceiling. I still do not see your 280 motors becoming a big thing, for the simple fact that they only fit in Stockade/Barricade flywheel cages. Also, what's the price point for these motors? Any specs, including a sales link, would be greatly appreciated.

Last bit; The flywheel build-up. This blue film is healthy and natural. An informal chronograph testing session shows that dart velocities increase when a healthy layer of this is present. Somewhere after 50ish shots the increase curve levels out. I don't have a well written report, so all you bigots can either take my word for it or forget I ever mentioned it. I personally wrap my flywheels with a single layer tape and then super glue the razor cut edge. This will produce the same effect as the blue buildup, this also drastically reduces buildup. I'm assuming the tape also saves the skin of a few of my darts, but the effect seems to be negligible.

Edit: Just noticed all the exposed wire. In the final iteration, you mentioned still tweaking it, I would try and make those all internal.

tl;dr I like it and we should meet up.

i was never meaning to be misunderstood as trying to shit on you.
i was just asking for some test results if you could, and if not, well i see that your blaster performs well from what you've said so far.
do you intend to do more modding or is this the extent of how far your motor modding will go?

also i'm pretty sure that you can find some high-speed specialty motors and/or rare earth magnet sets in the size you chose to use for your motors.
from the video, i see that your motors rev up pretty quickly (if you had an accel trigger, as an option to turn on your motors beyond just the trigger-sensor, that'd be nice to have dual-mode revving). Machubi motors come with standard strength isotropic ferrite magnets, and i think you'd appreciate the torque increase of a neodymium magnet set if you open those motors up and install a set in each.

here's a comparison of a neodymium-using motor vs a standard elite motor, both on 3s lipo. the neo motor has neos because the higher rpm armature sacrifices torque that i get back with the neos. http://s155.photobuc...MG2649.mp4.html

torque is the master of rapid-fire flywheel blasters from what i have seen (shot velocity consistency)
