If you 'necro' a thread from several years ago and reply to it as though it's an active conversation, you will be suspended. Pay attention to the thread you are reading, and take responsibility for your posts.

There is sometimes good reason to post to old threads (e.g., to add something significant to a mod that is still relevant. The Rainbow, +bow and SnapBow threads occasionally get interesting new posts). What Langley is talking about is the careless, inane posting by people who don't think of looking at dates.

Besides, I don't understand why people wouldn't realize that they're reading an old fucking thread. You don't just "accidentally" end up in old threads - the only way to even navigate to those is to click a link in a sticky or the mod list, or be searching through the archives.

Just let natural selection take its course.

Closing threads doesn't stop people from being morons; if someone is stupid enough to post in a five year old thread then they'll find other ways to break rules and be obnoxious. Better to suspend them at the get go rather than have them shit post in a dozen threads.

But again, what if it was a relevent post and had good information people can use later on and we went and deleted it.

I think they are talking more about deleting a post that you posted that was pointless or you want to remove.

example:
FNG123 just posted, "WOW, this mod is awesome". In a post from 4 years ago. He can see that and realize... oops, and delete it completely without updating the post.

I've seen some IPBoard sites have a banner that appears above the new reply button on older threads stating something akin to "This thread has been inactive for 30 days. Please consider not posting." Seems like a good, albeit slightly obtrusive system.
