My homemade nerf gun shots hard so I am experimenting with ways of making the darts not hurting. I tried 3DBBQ's dart but that hurt so i am now experimenting with a cotten-ball on the front.
Any suggestions?

I think you'd be better off using one of those little furry pom-poms you can buy from a craft store than a cotton ball... but that's just my 2 cents, and 2 cents isn't very much.

Yeah, those. I'd think they would be more effective than a cottonball would.

I would think that the fbr on the tip of the dart would be the best to reduce pain. The craft pom poms will probably hurt more actually.

FBR hurts because of the valocity of the gun hardens the FBR, like an airbag.

No, the thing that really hurts is the dried hot glue on the tip of your dart... The FBR wouldn't hurt as much, but the amount of FBR you'd need to stop pain on impact is enough to throw the dart off-balance.

Dear lord, I thought you left for good.

Bah

Just stick with a 1/4" of fbr on the tip if you must. It works.

Excellent way of reducing impact force is by reducing weight. Hollow out the center of the dart 3/4 of the way into the back, using a Wendy's straw for 1/2" FBR Stefans, then follow up with a tip weight reduction. Lowers range a tad, but reduces impact force quite a bit. The suggested foam tipping is also an excellent method of reducing sharp pain, though the dart can still do a fair bit of damage to eyes and such weak body parts.

Now why the hell would you want to reduce impact force zero? and range? :)

I want whoever I shoot to experience bone breaking impact force. Okay, a little exaggerated, but I do not want people I shoot to experience cuts, welts, or embedded BBs in their skin either. I personally hate that stinging sensation that comes with a bare hot glue tip or exposed BB, but I want to know, as well as I want my vitim to know, when we get shot. I don't like arguing over "I shot you!", "Well, I didn't feel it". At the same time, I don't want my little brother exclaiming he's gonna die because I shot his toe and he has a welt. Praise the foam padding of stefans.

They dont need to be hollow since after modding, you remove the peg that would prevent this. People make holes in the beleaf it makes the dart fly farther or more accuratley. It also makes them lighter and fit into tighter fitting barrels better.

Type "how to make stefans" or somethign into google. Something should come up.

Is there anyother way of hollowing out a stefen?

Yes, actually on Stefan's original site, he made a plywood thing with pvc glued on it to hold the dart blanks, and then he drilled holes in the backs with his drill press.

you have to twist it. be patient, you cant just jam the straw into it. lots of twisting is the key.

also, drilling is a bit of a nightmare...he must have had really dense backer rod or a razor sharp bit, cos ive tried drilling and it just makes a mess. about half an inch in the bit catches up in the foam and spins the dart around.

Well, since this is about making the darts hurt less, I'll put in my two cents to that end.

Take 1/2" of whatever FBR you're using, and hollow it out 3/4 of the way through, and glue it on to your dart tips.

The reason some other soft tipped darts still hurt is because when the foam is compressed, it gets hard. with this, there is a nice big pocket of nothing for the foam to be pushed into.

Also, this may very well increase the ricochet capability of the darts too.

Or you could just say "Screw it!" and shoot normal stefans, regardless of results.

About the "making holes in the back of micro stefans," I use a heated nail.

Its a random nail I picked out of a box, but it looks like its 1/8" in diameter. I have no idea to what it is made of. I attached it to a huge metal paperclip with some glue. I poke a small gide hole in the back of the stefan and poke it again when it is hot. I heat it on a gas stove, though any flame should do. It provides a really clean hole, and you can change the width based on how hot the nail is.

If anyone really wanted, I could provide a picture.

i did that. although i used an old RC controller antenna, it was the perfect size.
then i realized hollowing stefans does nothing but make them weak and bendy. not to mention they fly like drunken hummingbirds.

No, it does do something. It makes the dart shoot about 10 ft. farther. I did an experement with this cause my darts would fly everywhere. All you use is the tip of a hot glue gun.
Oh, and to make a stefan more accurate and reduce pain, not that anyone still cares, is to cut the stefan in 1/2. Mini stefans! They have less mass, so they stop faster than a normal stefan.

If people are bitching about darts hurting, offer a pity hit if you're 10 ft or closer. Organize this before the war and if they don't accept your mercy within a couple seconds, shoot them. They can't bitch about the sting because you gave them fair warning. Unless people are bleeding or eye protection is being broken, to some extent pain is just part of nerf (one of the best parts IMO).
