Post about dart-related Nerf war accidents or painful hits in this thread. Non-dart related injuries (e.g., spraining your ankle while running, cutting your finger while fabricating, etc.) should not be posted here.

If possible, include the following:

  • Nerf gun, details of the gun with muzzle velocity if possible (e.g., Longshot with X pound spring, brass barrel, chrono'd at 150 fps)
  • Distance from barrel (point blank, 20 ft., etc.)
  • Type of dart (especially dart tip), dart mass (if known or if can be estimated; note which)
  • Location of hit, whether it was a direct hit or a graze
  • Result of the hit, with photo(s) if possible (e.g., welt for 10 minutes, broke skin and healed in a few days, permanent blindness, etc.)
  • When the hit occurred, and at what war (e.g., BCNO in 2005)
Also post if you were hit in a way that you think should have caused injury or pain but did not. For example, if you took a shot from a singled Titan with slingshot weighted hot glue darts to the eyes at point blank range without any negative effect, that certainly would be interesting! (Don't try that, though.)

There have been several similar threads in the past, but generally they lacked the detail above. Examples: (1), (2), (3), (4).

Dart safety tests are also welcome in this thread. Here are some examples: (5), (6), (7), (8). I'd prefer as much detail as possible (including raw data with muzzle velocities, dart masses, blinded experiments, etc.), but anything is welcome.

The point of this thread is to not prove that Nerf is dangerous (it definitely can be, if done poorly, as is true of many things), but rather for us to focus on how we can improve safety in the sport. I'm hoping that the data in this thread can be used to better understand Nerf safety and develop realistic KED limits. (If you just want to brag about a ridiculous shot you took, you can do that here too.)

One last point: Don't post in this thread if you are just going to point out how stupid someone was in their post, e.g., "Why the fuck did you stare down the barrel of a loaded gun?" We all make mistakes, and I don't want to clutter up this thread. Other discussions about the hits are okay.

Two of mine:

At the last war I went to (sometime last year) I was directly shot on the (top) external part of my left ear from about 20 to 30 feet away. I am not sure what the gun or darts were like, but I'd guess the darts were slugs. This shot was interesting because it was extremely painful and caused my ear to ring for a few minutes. There was no welt or bruise, or any other effects.

I've been shot by a +bow with slugs directly on the fingernail from about 15 feet away (at Dart of War at the University of Maryland in 2011, if I recall correctly). That hurt a ton for a few minutes --- no long term effects.

At one of the Vengeance's (4, I think) I took a shot to my eye glasses from about 30 feet away. The result was my glasses frame actually breaking and pushing the lens flatly into my eye with quite some force. It basically felt like I got punched in the eye, my vision out of that eye was fuzzy for about 10 minutes. The dart was most likely a 1/4" slingshot dome (Canada) fired by a brass breached 4B.

Here you can see where I got hit, the hit also bent the frame and stripped the screw holding the frame together on that side. This is why I always make sure to have a pair of safety glasses on over top of my eye glasses when I Nerf.

No pictures for this, but a friend of mine made a homemade HPA type rig, and was able to shoot Stefan's through cans of spray paint, causing them to go boom ( the whole reason he made it..) well his "trigger" was malfunctioning and he accidentally shot me right in the temple from about 4 feet away, and actually knocked me unconscious for about a minute. I also had a welt like getting stung by a hornet.

After warring last saturday, I noticed yet again that since the near universal switch to slugs, I've had zero notable injuries. Maybe a couple of red rings, but nowhere *near* what it used to be like. (i.e. slingshot weighted glue domes from a 1.5k don't welt, they bruise).

Anyway, most notable hit was from a 3B, (non plugged), probably about 60' away, glue dome (probably double BB weighted...this was SPANO ca 2008, and that was pretty common). It hit my lip above my right eyetooth, and looked like I was smuggling a grape for a few days. The resulting scar tissue lump messed with my trumpet playing for a year.

I guess this is a pretty common experience, but it's at least a data point. A slug from a mad ghost at around 200fps from maybe five feet away left a welt for around 24 hours.

This is cheating because it's not my personal experience, however I witnessed it and I don't think the person it happened to has a nerfhaven account.

At Massacre 7 I witnessed a glue dome tear open a persons forehead. Blood squirted from his forehead on impact and it literally looked like he had just been shot with a real bullet. He continued bleeding for quite some time after that, and returned to the war about an hour later bandaged but soaked in blood. I was really surprised he didn't go get stitches.

This was caused by a poorly made glue dome with either a slingshot or ball bearing weight. Instead of a round and smooth dome, the glue was pointy and extremely jagged. I'm pretty sure a little kid brought those shitty darts, and from my point of view it looked as though a homemade airgun with a soda can for an airtank did the shooting, from about 50 feet.

I'll also share my most painful experience was getting shot by both barrels of tailo (two singled 3k's) point blank with ball bearing glue domes also at massacre 7. Bruises lasted for several days afterward.

For the record massacre 7 was fun as hell.

I took an AMIOR to the chest, with white foam and green McMaster felt, last Saturday. Distance of probably 40 feet or so. The gun was an AT3K that was most likely pumped 5 times with a Hornet pump.

Still welted, but not overly painful any longer. Was a bit of a surprise on Sunday when I noticed the welt.

I took a 1/4 slingshot weight to the leg at about 20 feet from a guy rushing with a shotgun couplerd Titan. 3 of the 4 barrels hit me but didn't hit bare skin and the 4th hit my leg. I had a welt and semi-major pain for a week.

Recently, I purposely shot my bare leg with my overhauled 3B (has 3 springs in it, 9" cpvc barrel) with a slug dart at point blank range. It stung for like 10 seconds then just hurt a little for a couple of hours and it left a fat welt on my leg for a couple of days. I still have a bruise on my leg from it.

Nibordude's BCNO hit used to be infamous among NIC old-timers. It might be one of the better data points if you want to contact him about it. Long story short, he took a direct hit to the eye from a Crossbow in an era where weights and heads were not well-regulated. I'm not sure if the dart was a 5/0, 3/0, or slingshot weight. It sent him to the Emergency Room and I believe he has some permanent damage in that eye. However, I no longer remember all the details.

My very first NIC war, I will not say who shot me... I've given him enough grief over time... but I'll post the story for posterity of the topic. I was peeking out from around a tree when I would say 50ish feet or so a slug cleared my glasses (my fault for not wearing proper eye protection... trust me lesson learned.) hit me right in the eye... caught me right between the eyebrow and eyelid. Thankfully no permanent damage. Had a slightly bruised eye for a few days and immediately after the shot my vision was foggy out of that eye for about 45 minutes to and hour.

Griever 2112 still plays with his alpha trooper quite often despite owning one of the scariest +bows.

Might as well join in on this thread.
While counting back in during a 3:15, MellowKid was standing about 20-25ft away waiting for me to respawn. On 14, I pointed a 3k at him and shot him in the arm with a dome on 'Clear'. Left ~3.5in lump on his arm that looked like a magnified mosquito bite for a few hours.

For funsies, I've shot my leg 3 times with
1. Tagger from a singled, slightly tank expanded Big Blast- still have a mark after a year
2. Tagger from a singled titan- still have mark after 8months
3. Elite dart through 44in barrel out of a Hydro Cannon- scab has almost healed after a month.

I was the guy who took him to go get first aid.
He was bleeding pretty bad. It was the worst hit I have ever seen at a Nerf war. Only fitting it would happen at the very last Massacre.
He was hit by one of his own sons darts that was shot out of another persons gun.
This was after I told him to go through his darts and pick out the bad ones.
Unfortunately I as well have no pics from that day.

and it's Talos.

Massacre 7 was the last one? Damn, that sucks. For the record massacre 7 was my first NIC war and I had a blast. And sorry for mispelling the name of your creation.

-During an indoor capture the flag game, Stony Brook University, April 19, 2013. ~6pm-7pm
-was using Longshot immortal kit, 8kg spring
-full sized felt tipped slugs
-I accidently shot a guy in the eye from ~10ft-15ft away
-his vision was blurred, his iris scratched, but has made a full recovery since

Other notes: He doesn't care that he got shot in the eye and received damage, but he was upset that he couldn't go to the Bill Nye lecture later that night because he wanted to get his eye checked out.

When I first started modding I singled a titan but did it horribly (I put a coupler on the end of the stock barrel creating and absurd amount of deadspace). I shot my friend with it from like 15 feet away with a streamline around his waist. He had a penny sized deep purple welt-bruise for a couple of days.

NJNO this weekend. Gears was about 3 ft away and got a good hit on me with a UMB. The dart was a #8 Ryan styled slug with BigBen white foam. I believe he uses a 14" cpvc barrel. I used a 10" bicep.
