I'll keep this simple a short: I want to make mongos, and I'm having difficulty finding 1" FBR. McMaster seems to have it in 7/8" but not 1". My local Ace and Menards only go up to 3/4". Anyone know where I can get some?

I understand your frustration, but I should have probably been more clear in my OP. I am specifically looking for places which supply 1" FBR of known good quality for the making of mongos. I know FBR doesn't vary that much, but some brands of 1/2" aren't as good as others, so I'm hoping those who have actually made mongos can weigh in a bit. Sorry for the confusion.

That said, thanks for the suggestion, and if I can't find out what others have used to make mongos out of, I'll likely try one of those.

I love mongos and can use them pretty effectively, but I prefer jumbos instead. Here is a link to the foam that I use on my mongos: http://www.bestmater...cker-rod-100-cc
Darts made with that foam have a perfect fit (good for springers and air guns) in 1 in pvc pipe.

You might try looking for 1" OD pipe insulation; it'll come with a hole through the middle and is tougher than any FBR I've seen. I believe 1/2" insulation was about 1" OD, but it's been awhile. I have no idea how it compares to FBR pricewise (having never looked for 1" FBR), but it's pretty reasonably priced stuff.

If you are interested, my ace carries 1in fbr for about $.60 a foot. I have used it for mongos and it is quite good foam. My ace is also in the same building as a post office. Send me a pm if you would like some.

I've been trying to find information about weights for Mongo sized darts, but it's pretty scarce. Does anyone have any information on weights for mongos?

Yes, the only weight I have ever seen used is a 3/4" steel fender washer. Here is a link to a write-up.

Super balls are much harder than foam rubber is, so if you are concerned about softness, I wouldn't advise using them. Super balls are also probably much more expensive than the combined cost of foam rubber and steel washers.

I've made awesome mongos that used molten decorative gel clings molded in to a dome. They were mushy and sticky. Kinda fun until cat hair. That said, as long as you don't exceed about four times the acceptable mass for a micro sized dart (~1.0g), you should be fine. So that's about 4g. Personally, I'd make silicone domes. I'm really liking those lately.

How far does a Mongo shoot from a typical [k26] powered homemade?

I have no idea how mongos will perform at all. I plan on launching mine with a Titan-based air system, so probably they will go quite far. I'm just screwing around, and I'll post more when I've actually had time to do some experimenting.

I've made mongoes with a few different weights. the slug-like ones that I use at wars use a #8 3/4" washer, but I've also made a batch of ridiculous ones with 1" bouncy balls. I hollowed out half of a ball, glued in a 1/2" ball bearing, then hot glued that into foam. Obviously I would never shoot these at someone; with a sprinkler valve homemade I've shot them well over 200 feet. Plus you can make them in so many colors and cool patterns!
