I don't know why not, but there is no logical explanation for why that shouldn't work, just remember that the PC is a complex piece of machinery full of pistons, valves and plastic thing-o-ma-bobs. Make sure that you're tank is connected to ALL the required outputs, just a single one can screw up the entire gun, even for good.

You have to pump it alot to get good distance but if you have a small or somewhat medium tank (about 2 to 3 inches) then it wont take alot of pumping and its more compressed.
Sooooo, the smaller the tank the more the compresion but less amount of air.
I used about 1 1/2 foot of 2 1/2 inch pvc pipe for my airtank and it takes 20-25 pumps to fill it and then pump it 12 more after shooting it some.

Does the air leave the tank when you depress the trigger? If so, where does it exit the gun if not out the piston set-up?

The Vinyl goes to the trigger, where the bladder used to hook up.

I still think the problem lies with the piston. I think that the extra air pressure maybe ruined an o-ring in the assembly. I will take a look at my PC and think about it for awhile.

Do Raiden's experiment only try depressing the trigger while it is underwater. The air bubbles will probably be leaking somewhere in the piston, not out the very front.
The hissing sound means air is reaching the piston, but is not sealing the piston mech in the tube. The piston is fairly complicated, so fixing it will be very hard unless it is a casing leak.
