For the past month at least (For me) Nerf Haven's whole site has been really laggy. It takes forever for just 1 page to load, takes forever to post a reply to a PM or a forum post, sometimes I even have to exit out of my window. I don't know if it's just me, our internet, my computer or Nerf Haven. I posted this to see if anyone else is having similar problems. So, is anyone else having any similar problems? And does anyone know of a solution? (I know your not tech support).
I hope an Admin sees this so they can fix this.

Google Chrome. But figures right after I post the topic the site responds faster. It keeps on going on and off. Slow, then 20 mins later it goes a little faster then it goes slow again....

My internet signal is always very weak, but my lag isn't that bad. Maybe it is just your internet connection. It takes maybe 30 seconds to load a page in the mods/homemades pictures thread. It takes like 5 seconds to load a thread like this. Sometimes though it takes a while to load, but that is not often.

I've noticed the same thing with Firefox. It's definitely an intermittent issue.

I vaguely remember hearing that it had something to do with the server migration a while back. That may or may not be the case.

30 seconds? That's crazy.

Although I don't have to wait 30 seconds, my site browsing has slowed down considerably since the server migration.

I've noticed it when doing basically anything. Took ~10 seconds to open up this reply window on a connection that doesn't have those kinds of problems doing anything else. Sometimes it's worse than others, I've had to stop the page and try again later on a few occasions.

Thats not the problem, it the Nerf Haven site. And how I know that, because every other site I go to loads in a snap, Nerf Haven takes Forever for anything to load.

Unfortunately, we're still on a shared hosting server, which caps our resources. The server we were on previously was similar, but I think the restrictions on resources were not as tight, and perhaps the other sites sharing the server did not receive as much traffic. I've been working to optimize the database and tweak the settings for the forum software to speed things up, and it seems like there's been a huge improvement since the initial move. If it continues to be a problem we will consider moving to a dedicated server, however that would represent a big increase in expenses, and we might have to pass around the NH Tip Jar a bit to make that happen.

I figured that was probably it. Any chance of commercializing the site? I know cxwq didn't want to go that way back when it started, but if done such that it's not annoying (a sidebar, maybe header and footer) I certainly wouldn't care.

I've considered setting up ads that are only visible to users who are *not* logged in, but I would need to get Vacc on board as well as the moderators before I made a decision like that. There also may be some shirts and other NH branded goodies available in the future. We'll see.

On topic: I haven't been experiencing any noticeable slowness at all apart from searching. Maybe it's because I do most of my browsing late at night.

Edit: Right after I posted that, I tried searching, which was slow, as usual. That's the only slow part of the site for me.

Now you got me interested! I would buy shirts. Also having a youtube channel that the admins run and posting about mods and that stuff and partnering on youtube will get you some good money, some people live of off youtube partnering.

Like they don't have better things to do? All of the Admins I know of are 25+ with families or full time jobs/schooling.

Langley,I know my opinion does not really have much weight but I think adding Ads for un-registered users would be a fantastic Idea, it seems like there is Quite a LOT of guest traffic Available for revenue. Heck, if there ever ended up being a Surplus in advertising dollars that could be put toward the Mod contest's prizes, better servers, etc.

I made a few adjustments, and things seem to be improving from my end. Hopefully this isn't just a fluke.

The forums load for me about as fast as they used to before the move. Even when the connection is weak, it's rare for anything to take more than 3 seconds to load. The benchmark homemade pictures thread rarely takes more than 7 seconds to load. Search can take a while, but that was always slow due to the volume of entries it needs to loop through. Lag issues now are probably with one's computer or connection rather than with the server.

One way to reduce server load would be to make Ted an admin and let him click "ban user" until he gets bored.

The site lag was actually mainly due to memory issues with the site's software, and most of the images in the photos thread are hosted off-site anyway. Searching, and looking at the 'View New Content' page (which is basically searching) are both actions that should be a bit faster now, at least at the speed they were at before the server migration.
