Mods: I realize that idea threads are not usually tolerated, but I really need some input as to whether this would be safe/plausible. If you think that this is more suited to the General Nerf section, could you please move it?

Okay, so I came across powder actuated tools a few years ago, and actually own one now. They operate using a cartridge, usually filled with cordite, which is similar to a blank :cough:firearm:cough: round. Here is a link to the wiki page about them: wiki

I am thinking of making a nerf pistol which would use these as the propellant. Does anyone think that this would work? And more importantly, would it be safe? I plan on making the gun mostly out of metal, so it could turn out to be a significant investment. Which is why I need your advice before I build it.

Here is a paint drawing that I made:

Wow! The picture disappeared! Could it be because it was incredibly unsafe, and stupid, and inappropriate to post?

Yes.

Im very sure it has been done before with a 9mm. Depending on how much powder you would use it could be a safe primary.

Honestly... I would say most idea are welcomed with some proof of concept... However anything with a charge of any kind is extremely dangerous. We are here to have fun with toys and we do have a lot of kids here... Last thing any of us want is for one of them to try this and God forbid something goes wrong.... Not trying to backseat seat mod here, just voicing some common sense and concern as a father.

Please keep that in mind for next time. And -Crusher, in no way would this be a safe primary, let alone war legal... Hell this wouldn't be legal period.

Griever 2112 still plays with his alpha trooper quite often despite owning one of the scariest +bows.

The tools I'm aware of that use those cartridges use them to drive spikes into concrete. Way beyond acceptable Nerf blaster power output IMO. Especially if you use a dart with any kind of metal weight in it (washer, BB); if the weight separates, you've got a nice washer/bb-sabot launcher.

In short: No, this would not be safe, do not pursue it further.

I think this would work just fine but when you get to it, why? Its not like you would want to use it in a war and when you finally finished it it would cost a ton for parts. Also there is a safety factor ,I would be pretty scared to get shot by that. Why not just make an octoshot or a plusbow or crossbow. That is just my opinion but it would be pretty cool and probably would have higher range and rof than a titan.

I've heard some good ideas, and some really bad ideas. Just the PRIMER ALONE would be enough to fire the dart more than 100', if everything was set up right. Powder too? You're looking at manslaughter charges.

Any explosive-powered blaster would be very expensive to operate, difficult to construct, destructive for the foam, and probably unsafe for the user or the target. You could regulate the power so it hits the same distance as a normal blaster, but you would still have a blaster that looks, acts, works, and sounds like a firearm, which you are discharging in a populated area.

Somebody called the police on us at a war before and said we were playing paintball. Two officers arrived and one was hiding out of sight in case we attacked the other officer. If somebody called and said we were firing guns or improvised cannons there would have been alot more than two officers.

Stick to air, it's easier to work with and has less risks.

Well, it seems like this was not such a good idea after all! Thanks everyone for your input, and I will not be making this.
