Here is an extremely easy mod you can perform on a vortex disc to increase the accuracy by about half.

Materials:
Vortex Disc
Nail Clippers
Posted Image

STEP 1:
Take your Vortex disc and take out a dimple from the outside of the disc with your nail clippers.
Posted Image

STEP 2:
Continue all the way around your disc. You should be able to get 10 or 11 dimples around your disc.

Your done! It's that easy.

I'd recommend setting up a test to prove this to us; fire level from a stationary position at a target on a wall X feet away, mark where the discs hit, and record all data (deviation from target, with + numbers above or to the right, and - numbers below or to the left. Essentially, coordinates). Preferably a lot of firings. Then do it again with regular discs, and have you or someone else do a statistical analysis to determine if it is measurably more accurate.

If possible, put the gun on a table-vise for this test, or find something to mount it to where it won't move. Just trying to aim it in the same place won't cut it.

Also, your results will be more relevant if you can shoot at a faraway vertical target where hits will leave a lasting visible sign. This will cause your measurement plane to better approximate the angular nature of the date.

edit: Also, you can't see anything in those pictures.

I will try this, but I am skeptical.

Increase the accuracy by half? That doesn't make much sense to me...please explain your science behind why this makes it fly straighter?

I would assume the physics working here would be similar to the physics (magic) of golf balls and their dimples.

Can you upload some clearer pictures of the dimples please?

The dimples serve to break up laminar flow about the airfoil of the golfball, decreasing pressure drag behind the ball. On foam discs? I'm a bit skeptical. They don't travel nearly as fast as a golfball, and the profiles aren't all that similar. Still, they are much lighter than a golfball, so any forces acting on a disc would have a greater apparent affect.

If this method actually works, great. Please back up these claims with a vice-and-table test, as stated several times in this thread.

I will perform a test within a couple days and post the results.

I would guess that these dimples would be easier to make in bulk with an empty hot glue gun tip, or a wood burning tool tip. Probably more uniform as well.

With the nail filing end that swings out from under the lever.

I'm pretty sure he used the cutting face to nip at the disk.

Yeah he said use them to "take out" dimples. Probably cut 'em up.

Also when is this data coming up? Or did it turn out to be a crap mod? Until I see some evidence I'm gonna keep this in my "Do-not-do-this" list.

Considering they were going for range and accuracy when they made them, I'm pretty sure grooves would have been already included if it actually did anything. Its not like the XLR discs are foam footballs made for kids that still cannot spiral a football correctly when throwing them. The Vortex line has mechanisms built into them to insure the discs will spiral, they do not need more help.

I tried this. On ten vortex discs. It doesn’t make a difference.

I duct-taped a Praxis to a stool, then fired the modified discs down my relatively level drive-way. After measuring the spread of the discs, I then fired off ten unmodified discs and measured their spread. The average spreads of each set was within a foot of each other.
