I think this might be exclusive to imageboards, but is there a way to "sage" post, that is to make a new post in a thread without bumping it?
As far as I know, that is exclusive to imageboards. There's no way to do it here. Again, users are notified via e-mail by default if they have a new private message and will additionally see a notification on any NH page, so making a post to inform a single person that they've been sent a PM is a huge waste.

Must be a side effect of oral insemination. I hear there was a real uptick in that during the 90's.Or is it just an instinct all assholes are provided with at birth?

I can see the reasoning, but this forum software has very obvious PM alerts. If you're at all expecting one (as someone posting in the trading forum should), then you'll notice.Haven't done it on this forum but I always thougth of it as insurance against your PM not going through/the OP not realising they had a PM.
People started doing it because they saw other people doing it.

Only logic I can see, barring Jeo's line of thought, is in the trading threads, saying the PM'ed about [insert blaster] is to maybe to let others, hey I'm looking into this one. This way others will let them have a chance, or know that they need to step up, or it's spoken for. But just saying "Pm'ed" itself does seem pointless though.I can see the reasoning, but this forum software has very obvious PM alerts. My Youtube PageGriever 2112 still plays with his alpha trooper quite often despite owning one of the scariest +bows.

This is the reason I see being more useful. I suppose someone could now instead say "currently in negotiations for X blaster". It helps other potential buyers gauge interest.Only logic I can see, barring Jeo's line of thought, is in the trading threads, saying the PM'ed about [insert blaster] is to maybe to let others, hey I'm looking into this one. This isn't really meaningfully different from saying PM'ed or calling dibs on a blaster. It's up to the seller to make it apparent whether or not an item is available.
If you need to convey info to other people in the thread, then do that. But just posting PM'ed implies that you have nothing to say to the rest of us.
This is true. Any time you're communicating with just the OP in a trading thread, it should be by PM only. If you have a public bid, or a question of general interest to other potential buyers that is obviously different, but anything else is a pointless bump.

That's my point, there really isn't any point in telling the person on a site that you have sent them a message on the very same site. Mentioning that a message has been sent about a particular item does however let other potential buyers know what's up. Often, if I see that someone has put an offer in by PM I won't really go after the item in question as often as I would if there had been no interest. This is true. I suppose in addition to putting in a PM, you could say in the thread "I'm sending in an off of $X.00", but I know some sellers seem to get annoyed when you say in the thread how much you're offering, as they often seem to hope that with blind PM bids, they can trick people into overpaying, compared with what they would otherwise pay.

It doesn't matter ether way to me but that's what I have observed from other websites.
Edit: As far as posting that "I am offering $XX.XX amount for this item", I personally will never post how much I am offering in a public forum because all the next guy has to do is offer $1 - $5 more and most sellers will sell it to him just for the extra cash even though I am the one that offered first and would have most likely gotten the item.

I guess the long-and-short, for me at least, is that it's for the benefit of other forum readers, and not to notify the recipient that they've got a PM inbound.
Edit: That filter is hilarious!
Edit2: but it totally makes my post difficult to read, so I'm using a work-around except for here:
