The tap rule was established after we had some pretty rough bloodshed on the east coast. I don't remember who came up with it, but we (4 Horsemen, LCM, LGLF) agreed that it was a good rule to keep the games intense and it also doubled as a way to stop losing ammo.

What happens when you "tap" is that you tap a person (with your barrel) as opposed to firing on them point blank. It helps when people are reloading and you don't want to waste the shot if others are close enough to pose a threat. It's what I think a good rule, and keeps it pretty fun.

Generally we use the tap rule in Michigan wars, to save from people getting unneccesary welts from airjet guns. Problem is, what happens when you get tapped by an unloaded, unprimed weapon? Are you hit? With pvc barrels and pump guns its impossible to tell if a gun is loaded or not. I'm just wondering what other people do in these situations. Also, when you guys play do you have to accept barrel taps, even when someone's using a relatively weak gun?

just a tidbit to add to the discussion

Personally, I like the game when you have to time your shots and reloads. If you are both standing in front of each other reloading, knowing the first one to reload will be the one who wins, it makes the game alot more... suspenseful. I don't like barrel taps, pull out a blow gun (or a H2H...) or reload as fast as you can.

We also have Mercy kills though. If you don't want to get shot close range, you lay face down on the ground, hands on back, and yell MERCY, and hopefully you will have one less welt. Kind of wussy, but sometimes nescessary.

generally in my neighborhood, we play that you shoot them unless the victim says tap, or something. that way, they can take the hit to make you reload, or get tapped to save themself pain.

We don't allow people who aren't loaded to use the "tap" rule. The reason it's used is to prevent any mishap at such close range. This basically works under the east coast honor system. And as far as I know, has never been abused.

We also use the " 'tap' " rule as a piano wire scenario too. If you sneak up behind someone you can tap them instead of leaving a hole in their back with your 5k.

We use the tap rule where I live if you are loaded, because on most guns, the dart is showing, and just touching the opponent's dart is fatal  , like a poison dart or something  ......... hmm?????

We use a form of the tap rule however it is not really the same. If you are too close to the person you have "surrender" them. This basically just causes arguments and disputes, sometimes some punches too. However in the end everyone usually ends up getting shot. Pointless isn't it?

I like the tap rule because some nerf guns hurt :o
I also think that if you get tapped with an unloaded barrel and surrender then oh well. Theres always a chance that the 5k at your back is unprimed... but who'd want to risk it.

H2H! USE THEM.

uhhh right.

Well my two cents is that its all a mind game. If you think that someone with there SM1500 isn't loaded and is trying to tap you well then you can try to shoot them before you. But I would gladly sit out a war to know that I have one less bruise. Just not worth it.

We have a rule where if you're within 5-10ft (depending on game rules) away you can say "surrender", and if they agree to they'll say so, if they don't they, dont have to say anything, they can just try and shoot you. What happens is that many times someone thinks they can spin around faster than someone else can pull the trigger, they're usually wrong  . Depending on who I'm playing with, we sometimes alow meatsheilding, which is where someone who doesnt have a loaded gun/ any gun on them (it happens) gets caught up to by someone on the opposing team who does. Once you touch the unarmed person, you can force them to drop their unloaded (or nonexistant) weapons, and walk infront of you, effectivly forming a sheild. If you shoot and misss someone during a battle, you run like hell, for fear of being tagged by the opposing team, being a sheild is not fun. If they run (when they've already become your sheild) you can shoot them, point blank, however, if you get killed before shooting them, they aren't out. Its a guessing game, because if you have a meatsheild and you are ambushed by other people on your sheilds team your sheild might run; at which point you have to decide if you should A: shoot them and run from the armed opposition (only aplies to single shots); or B: let them run, and try and take on the armed and just slightly more dangerous enemies. Hey, it works for us.

I don't quite understand the "tap" rule. I would guess that the gun has to be loaded and primed for the rule to be used. Otherwise, you might be running up to someone who is reloading, you decide to "tap" him, he whips around and "taps" you first, even though he has no dart in the barrel. But then you have the problem of knowing if there is a dart in the barrel.

I would just use the surrender rule. If you are within 15 feet of the guy, yell "SURRENDER!" If you don't get a sure "I SURRENDER, DON"T SHOOT!," you take care of business, and the person will be sorry he didn't surrender quick enough.

At YANO/Armageddon we generally employ the tap rule but we have a couple of long-time participants who consistently deny knowledge of the "it's got to be loaded" clause. I may change it to a surrender rule at this month's Armageddon and see how that works.

My group uses a surrender rule. We don't have any regulations that the gun has to be loaded or primed. Generally we say anything inside of five feet should be a surrender. Our only big rule is that surrenders are either clearly accepted or denied. No one does that though, because I play with a bunch of dishonest assholes. They're not bad people, they just would lie to the pope to stay in the round, that's all.

Once again, H2H!! I just built a spring loaded bayonet that attatches to a 1/2 in. PVC adapter. Therefore, tap someone with something combat effective and without disputing whether your gun is loaded

Under normal circumstance, my testosterone would get in the way and I'd call you a pansy. Howver, I just got back from an abosolutely insane nerf war and am very tired. Therefore, I will sympathize. Judging a sport by how painful it is is one of the most degrading features nerf has against sports such as paintball. This is extremely childish. Yet, at the same time, you have to take into consideration that by playing it safe and never being hard enough to take a stefan from close range will generally land you as a pansy. So, man up and take the shot. If not for your sake, than for your prides sake, just take a welt. Besided, last week I took a 5000 from close range right to the face. The welt landed me pride, dammit! People after the war were all commenting on how cool it was! I don't know why, but hey, I'll take a compliment anywhere I can get one.

I have a question for you guys.

What rule do you have concerning a dart hitting a gun? Is it considered a hit? Are guns shields? Or do you play where a gun is out of commission if it is hit?

A dart hitting anything other than a Manta Ray is counted as a hit.

There are two main reasons for this:
  • Avoids the constant bickering over whether you hit the gun or the person.
  • Keeps people from blind shooting around corners so much.

I think all gun hits should count honestly because depending on where you see the shot from, depends on whether or not you think the dart would have hit the person. My main problem with this are dodges I've seen and shots taken that wouldn't have resulted in a hit, but others who had seen them thought they would have been. Last war this happened to Mantis I think.
