I give you My Vulcan. Its called the Voltage.


***SAFETY NOTICE***
Since there are some people on here that are younger and may not know, this is NOT a regular Nerf gun any longer and will all but legally qualify as a firearm. This project deals with high voltage (about four times more voltage than in the average american's wall outlet!) and is not extremely dangerous, it is EXTRAORDINARILY DANGEROUS. This fires METAL BULLETS referred to as "bolts". The "safety" orange and yellow colors of the nerf blaster are soon to fade behind a custom paint job that would more appropriately give the look of this project of a real firearm. DO NOT ATTEMPT at home.

Specs:
Stock gears and clockwork got a 12V upgrade
AR Modification
18650 Li-Ion Battery Bank (11.1V, 15AH)
AC220V Static Inverter
Voltage-doubler circuit (220VAC to 440VDC)
5000uf Capacitor Bank (484 Joules @ 440 Volts)
Dart-to-Bolt Adapter (x25, one per belt)
Dual 1200V SCR's
IR Break-Beam Firing Circuit

Bolts are pre-loaded into ammo belt similar in fashion to the placement of the stock darts. Bolt advances into firing position and forward motion engaged by stock clockwork. Bolt mates to back of coil barrel and is accelerated forward by stock pneumatics. Bolt's advance breaks IR beam and triggers the SCR's(fires the coil, accelerating the bolt) to dump 484 Joules into the coil. Blammo

Future mods: 2nd stage and optical trigger. Will expand cap bank at that time.

Near future endeavors: nerf'd claymore, nerf'd SAM, nerf'd grenade

Okay, I'm just going to call a mulligan on this whole thread. A do-over, if you will. This thread is now in Off-Topic, where it would have been to begin with, if not for the fact that I have disabled posting new threads in off topic for FNGs. The OP clearly understands that his project isn't something that belongs at an NIC nerf war. Dude just thought people on a Nerf forum might be interested in a vulcan he frankensteined into a coil gun. Plenty of people build coil guns as hobby projects. They're a great way to learn about physics, electronics, and engineering (and to destroy things in spectacular ways). And I'm willing to tolerate posts that don't directly apply to the NIC, to a very limited extent. So I'm going to re-open the thread for anyone who doesn't intend to flame this guy on the basis that his coil gun isn't safe or doesn't belong on a nerf forum. I don't expect any retarded flame wars over this.

Actually, this is pretty cool. Do you have an end date in mind? Even though it's not at all nerf, I really want to see a video of it shooting. How long will the charge time be for the capacitor bank? Are you running this off of a 220V outlet, or are you stepping the voltage up from the battery pack, and if so, will the pack be able to supply enough current for sustained firing?

Although I wouldn't classify this as "Nerf," this is an interesting tech project you have here. Please upload a demonstration/ firing video soon. I would like to see this thing in action, as well as the charging time between each shot, force of the projectiles, etc.

A while ago, someone posted a link to a taser, or grenade launcher, or something, and it was shut down, and the original post was edited to keep kids form doing dangerous stuff. I think this would qualify, but if Langley thinks it's cool, whatever.

I think it's interesting, as I've always been interested in high-tech weapons. Do you think you could post some internal pics?

thats the thing, besides dremeling out/removal out the AR, shes got bone stock guts! she'll be running at 12vdc @ 500ma.

heres the power fluctations:
backpack has 14 volt li-ion cells wired to 220Vac inverter. cord from back of gun plugs into inverter, and inside gun there is a 3 way split(basically)-
1) 220VAC goes to a 12VDC 500ma power supply to guns's stock clockwork & pneumatics & eye circuit & scrs
2) voltage doubler circuit to charge cap bank to 440V
3) by-pass of voltage doubler circuit to bridge rectifier to charge caps to 220V
