So I didn't come up with this technique myself. Someone in Nerf IRC helped me out with it, although I don't remember who it was. I just wanted to post this so it would be easily found by others through the search function.

Anyways, down to business.

In order to do tightening rings in petg, slide a piece of brass, or some other snug, hard cylinder into the petg, just short of where you want your tightening rings. (This will prevent petg from simply flexing while you tighten down on it with your rotary cutter.) Use the cutter next to the brass, not directly over it and after your rings are formed simply remove your brass.

I personally find the tightening rings useful when using streamline darts, as they will otherwise slide right through the barrel.

Top is a piece of petg ready to get its tightening on.
Bottom is the final product.

Whoever gave me this technique should feel free to take credit. :-)

I believe you took my idea and adapted it. My only question is the rigidity of petg as its not very strong anyways.

Lol dom... the only thing you've ever given me was a headache. I'm pretty sure the technique was given to me by venom or someone else respectable.

Yeah, I'm not sure how this would work if you weren't going to nest the petg in something else like PVC.
I just did a quick, sloppy test by flexing both a normal piece of petg and one with the tightening ring and they both seemed equally resilient.

Edited for grammar.

Don't diss the dom, please. Speaking only for myself, I respect the guy alot. Looking around at his posts and contributions, I'd say he's actually pretty well respected here. While it may be that venom gave you the idea you did not need to add the "or someone else respectable" part.

LOL at taking anyone's idea. Tightening rings are as old as the internet. I've been doing this for a while to my own petg and people do this to their 9/16 brass breeches. Putting a doewl rod/brass that fit in the petg is a good way of not breaking it. however instead of using the cutting wheel, I use a washer that's the same size as the cutting wheel. I don't remember what size it is though. probably a 10-24 or 10-32 however.

It doesn't work as well as tightening rings in brass because you cant get them in as deep, however If you have foam that's just a little too loose in PETG (I'm talking slides through with a bit of force, not falls through) then tightening rings will help build up a bit of pressure. Just don't tighten too much or you'll break it.

Good call on the washer andtheherois. I've heard good things about the that technique, especially with brass. I haven't had any issues with cutting through the PETG with my regular rotary blade, but I also have a POS rotary cutter that I couldn't rely on to cut brass when it was brand new.

IN the IRC the other day we were talking about how to get streamlines to fit into PETG better. I said used a few inches of 17/32" brass with tightening rings. You just wanted to do tightening rings in the PETG but that doesn't work so we decided to put something in the PETG to stabalize it so you could get tightening rings and not just bend your PETG.

Yeah fuck that dom guy, he's not a respectable figure in the world of toy gun hobbyists.

On a more serious note...
There is quite a lot of variability in the diameters on stock darts. Though they are more consistent than FBR, you can still find batches that fit loosely in CPVC or other such weirdness. Tightening rings probably help out the barrel efficiency in that regard.

Yeah, my first attempt to use streamlines in an rscb with a petg barrel involved about an inch of cpvc at the beginning of the barrel. Some of the streamlines would work fine, others would be so tight the darts would rupture under the pressure and become jammed. This method handles the variance in streamlines darts much better.

dude you noob darthrambo totally came up with this first give credit where credit is due
you should read his original post it is quite exhausting.

Seriously though, in a thread where the OP is going out of his way to be humble, I don't see why anyone needs to be catty about taking credit for this. It's nice to give a shout out to someone who's work you are building off from, but aside from that this whole idea of strictly enforced Nerf Street Cred baffles me. The only time this sort of thread would ever be a problem is if the info were better documented and easily searchable elsewhere on NH. There are some other techniques, linked below, but this one seems pretty spot on.
