Weeee, Another gametype post!

We played this at the late July MN war and it ended up being a hit. A few PM's asking about it later and I thought it was worth sharing.

SOOOO...
Posted Image

The basic premis is the same as deathmatch in that everyone has 3 lives. As see here represented by balloons.
Posted Image

The DIFF is that in the game when you get hit 3 times you are not out: you become a bomb and still have the power to knock others out of play.
Posted Image

So here is the game: first everyone ties 3 balloons to themselves like a gang of baus.
Posted Image

Then loose like 15 lbs...F.

THEN run around in free for all fashion! Once you are hit you pop a balloon. There should be no camping because there should be someone on your ass every second of the match.

Once you have lost all your balloons you ARE NOT OUT: you are free to play at a pace as intense or as liesurly as you please. You cannot win, but you sure as hell can tag people who still have balloons and influence their demise.

Fun on many levels, and the rules and objectives are such that it is hard for DOUCHBAGGERY to occur naturally.

Preparation cost is $3-$4 at a dollar store. You can expect much Mario Madness and hopefully pictures of grown men looking foolish at The HellaWeen Warfestravigasm 2011.

Sounds fun... I wonder what people that have know idea what you are doing think when they see a bunch of guys with balloons tide to themselves shooting each other with toy guns.

This is one of those ideas that should be totally obvious, but never gets implemented, as far as I've seen. Would make it so that people aren't sitting out. Or that, once you're out, you'll have no fear and try charging people with bolo rounds and other crazy things.

Oh snop. I can imagine the hilarity that ensues with people who are unafraid of death. Only problem is if dead people gang up on a certain target. It's less for the glory of winning as to just shoot everyone you see.

Travel Cost to TRU = $2. Eliminator pack = $15. Momentum testing = 2 lost darts. Outranging Recons with your mini pistol = priceless.

I'm definitely buying some dollar store balloons for the next war I go to. Great idea! Can't wait to play this with NJ/Eastern PA people.

Love it! I'm definitely going to suggest this to Dayko next year.

Any suggestions on max size, or is it more-the-merrier?

Of course, you don't have to use balloons. One method of hit tracking I've experimented with to pretty good success is the use of colored flagging tape. Many wars already use 2 colors of flagging tape to differentiate teams at larger wars; this simply expands on that. For 3:15, each nerfer simply wears 3 pieces of his teams colored flagging tape (one around the neck with 2 crossed over the chest is nice for visability) and removes a piece each time he is hit. The player scoring the hit should be able to observe this removal to confirm the hit is taken. If each player simply puts the flags in his pocket as he loses them, they can be reused with no downtime for each round (each nerfer would need 3 of each color at the begining of the day). This worked well at apoc for like 2 rounds until the war simply grew too large for me to explain the idea to each new comer.

Anyway, it's just an alternative to the balloons if you either want to keep running this round throughout a war, or normalize the hit count function with regular deathmatch.

If I might add one suggestion for some variation? One of my favorite things in Mario Kart (DS) was/is the ability to steal a balloon by speeding-into another kart, would there be a way to work that here? Since this is often hard to accomplish in-game, that should carry over as well. Perhaps it should be that to steal 1 balloon you must score a hit off of a player by using a stock ball-blaster, stock Titan, or stock Koosh brand Vortex blaster? The person hit must run to the hitter and give up one balloon, then stand still (but be able to shoot anyone but the hitter) while the hitter has 10 seconds to clear the area?

That could definitely work too, and be closer to the game.

That might work with tagging tape, but the balloons were tied on with ribbon and it's not easy to get them off. Unless you feel like running around with scissors.

With the numbers we had there wasn't much time for standing still as it was.

So this is free-for-all 3-15? And what are the rules when you become a 'bomb'? Do you 'explode' after you tag someone or can you continue tagging people until the end of the round?

once you're out, you'll have no fear and try charging people with bolo rounds and other crazy things.

Exactly! Once you are out you cam play to any level at any pace with any blaster you want and can still make a hellova diff on the outcome.

Only problem is if dead people gang up on a certain target.

Thus layering in another level of strategy and play: the 'best' player might get gang beat.

Great idea!

Thanks dude. Also thanks for liking my bleach shirt thread :D

M-t-M! We played with 18 peeps or so and it was a blast.

Of course, you don't have to use balloons.

Truth. If I have one qualm it is the balloon scraps when you are done. But with out balloons it just ain't Mario Kart.

Ideas

I love where your head is at, but stealing balloons and counting rules violate my number one rule of simplification. As it stands the game is very self-regulating because there I little to F up.

With the numbers we had there wasn't much time for standing still as it was.

YES! No camping because the number of players that can tag you never decreases.

So this is free-for-all 3-15?

And what are the rules when you become a 'bomb'?

Do you 'explode' after you tag someone or can you continue tagging people until the end of the round?

Yes, except no one is ever truly eliminated from play.

When you become a bomb you are free to keep playing at your own pace and eliminate people who still have balloons.

Unlike the video game you can play as long as you like. Or go take a break, whatever. If you are tagged AS a bomb I instituted a standing 15 count at a stand-still. No active player should stick around so the issue of counting speed is eliminated

Wait, so the bombs can shoot people? Or they have to physically tag people like in a game of tag?

If the later, it sounds very much like a Mario Kart themed version of a zombie round.

Yes: bombs are still fully in play. Everyone is still fully in play until only one player has balloons left.

By 'tag' I meant with a dart. You can do a melee hit if you were so inclined, but being in bomb status in no way affects what Blasters you can use or how you use them.

I do like HvZ but it is easy for people to decide to stop runnin around if they get tired or suck at running. In Mario Kart you and two buddies could park yourselves in the middle of the field chatting it up and still affect game play (if boundaries are set and I typically do that).

That strikes me as an unwise design choice. In Mariokart, the bombs are severely underpowered compared to active players, but still dangerous. I would suggest that the bombs have to drop their blasters and tag people by hand. Though they would not be very dangerous to the remaining players, you couldn't just ignore them.

The goal isn't to model Mario Kart, it's to be inspired by it and have a blast.

That said, can 'living' players shoot at 'bombs'? What's the effect of a hit, if any? (Aside from pain, that is. :) )

What I'm getting at is, can I play 'point defense' and 'shoot down' approaching 'bombs'?

I agree it sounds like a zombie round with a mario kart theme. I have an idea, if you are a bomb and you tag someone you can get one piece of tape back and the winner is the person with the most tape at the end of the game.

1) You and I sir are in the same page here: Mario Kart is the base model and kicking asses is the goal.

2) they can and should. A hit on a bomb means the bomb has to stand stationary and count to 15.

3) Mos def, but odds are some crazy 14 year old on the track team will run yo ass down while you do it.

I have an idea

'Nix, this is a great idea, but I cannot stress enough how simplicity is they key. It is why Deathmatch and HvZ are so common: you CANNOT mess them up.

My apologies if its been said already, but if you made it so only Balloon hits counted, it could probably be pretty fun

^My first thought as well, slingshot darts might even be used to pop them.

Actually, this sounds like it would be more well-suited to airsoft or paintball, since the projectiles in use would be more likely to pop the balloons.

^The flames, I am ready for them^

Oh yeah, we should bring back slingshots and put tacks on our darts so they pop balloons better!
