The DBF comic regarding why foam swords aren't used in nerf and the recent Penny Arcade comics have made me wonder, would a big cardboard tube be an acceptable melee weapon for nerf wars? You can't really hurt anyone with a cardboard tube, but you can engage in combat with one or even attempt to block a few stefans. The tubes would be cheap too. The only disadvantage would be the short life of the tube. They have a tendency to crease after you beat someone with it a few times.

On a side note, the aol spell check replaces stefans with "stiffens". Just thought you would like to know.

I would try this but A) The tubes get bent all to hell very fast, and B) It is possible to hurt people with cardboard tubes. Kinda weird story...

Uh, yeah. A cardboard tube is really narrow, you could easily shoot them before they even layed a finger on you. Plus, don't even attempt trying to block the darts with your tube (hehe, reminds me of Star Wars).

Tubes do come in different sizes. The kind you mail prints in are pretty wide.

Heh, I love Penny-Arcade.

I have a 12 inch tube that is pretty damn thick. I tried smashing it on a rail, and it didn't bend or anything. Too bad its small. I need a bigger one, thats thick. The only way I could find tubes that right size, are from wraping paper rolls.

Some dudes in the former KCNO used to play with foam swords, I think it was called "mideveal foam warfare" or something like that.

Yeah, I remember there being a lot of discussion about this on NC a year and a half ago, maybe two years. I think they ended up building somthing out of PVC and piping insulation, and of course lots of the handyman's secret weapon: Duct tape.

I never did hear what happened with that...

Yea, you can make a sword out of PVC and foam insulation. I did, and it works great. I used just the sword and SS2 once in a war and took out 2 people with just the sword. Go to foam corner to get the designs.
