Awaiting anticipated tsunami to Hawaii. A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 hit east coast of Honshu, Japan. Wishing luck to the others who received a tsunami warning.

A very close friend of mine is in Hawaii on business this week and they informed me last night of the tsunami. They said the damage isn't as bad as feared, but I am still shocked. Good luck to all who are in the middle of this.

Seriously though, the few bit's I've read about the earthquake sound pretty bad. I guess they're having trouble cooling down one of the nuclear reactors, which sucks.

I may sound dumb, but why are there fires because of an earthquake and a tsunami?

Earthquakes mean broken pipes.

Broken pipes mean leaking gasses, spilled fuel, and no water to fight fires.

Here is the deal with the nuclear plant:

Basically, the lack of backup electricity from outside the plant shut down the pumping system.
This means that they couldn't pump water through the reactor to cool it.
What they've now done is allowed sea water to flood into it in a last ditch effort to cool the reactor.
If the reactor melts down, it will melt through its concrete containment and through the earth down to the water table.
When it hits the water table, that water instantly turns into steam, and will cause a massive explosion, throwing fallout everywhere.

Even if the sea water does work, it will corrode the pipes. This means they'll have to build a containment dome ala Chernobyl at the very least.

This might sound stupid. But in my opinion I think that people should try to develop more technology that protects people against earthquakes and Tsunami's. A bended gate that is tall as a skyscraper, but with no holes should be able to protect you say on the coast or in an area. I think that we already got an Earthquake thing developed though. For buildings there are springs that are underneath the building where if the plates shift in an earthquake the building moves a bit to the right.

It has already been done. Japan has the best technology for natural disasters like the recent one. Flexible buildings, early detection systems, an annual earthquake/tsunami drill, etc. They are constantly using new technology to impove infrastructure. The porblem is that a quake followed by a tsunami will cause havoc regardless. In an earth quake the best place to be is an open area outside, but in a tsunami you want to be high up in a building( which most can withstand the water). Many people ran outside to saftey, not knowing of the pending tsunami.

This is entirely wrong, aside from the fact that sea water was used after previous pumping systems failed. Please don't spread fear about nuclear reactors, there is no major risk involved here. The reactor is already cooled and the pressure is vented. Chernobyl won't happen, and there won't be an explosion.

Thanks for that link, there's been a lot of bullshit about how Japan is going to be "10 times worse then Chernobyl" (in a fallout sense, not a general disaster sense) going around and it's nice to read about what is actually going on.
