The new Spectre rev-5. I think personally that Hasbro is listening to us. This gun stock I thought was pretty good, and it is certainly much easier to mod than the maverick. Let's start out with what they got right. It has a rotation mechanism that is driven when the gun is primed... Well that was all I could think of that they did well on. Now for the bad. It has a somewhat new spin on the inverse plunger design as you will see later, that has a tiny volume of air, roughly equal to the maverick. It also only has five shots which for those of us with basic math skills is one less than the maverick. It comes with a barrel extension that I never use, and a folding stock, which is sort of cool I guess. it doesn't collapse, it is a true folding stock.

Now on to the fun part. How do we make it better?

To start I'm going to assume that anyone who reads this is intelligent enough to open the gun. With that being said,

Now just like the maverick the rotating cylinder pops right out. You will need to use an exacto knife to cut the piece of plastic around the end of the metal rod so it can pop off the end of the rod. be careful to not deform it very much or you will ruin your gun.
Posted Image

once you have done that pull the rod out of the cylinder completely save the spring and the little plastic end piece you will need them later. Now there are five screws on the back of the cylinder around the edges that have to come out. After those are removed you can open it up by pulling both ends apart. Now just pull the ar pegs out and the rest of the restrictor should just fall out. I'm not sure yet if the ar pegs are a critical piece to this blaster like they were in the mav, However I don't think that they are. If it turns out that they aren't then this gun is very easy to convert to shoot stefans. all wars I have attended use stock darts so I just left them in.

Once you have that taken care of; turret all reassembled Plastic ring and spring put back where they go, put the turret back where it goes in the gun. the next thing to do is to address the plunger tube. Pull it out and pull out the part that holds the o-ring. take off the o- ring and look at where it was sitting. If you turn it around you will find that Hasbro has kindly made the blaster unable to seal perfectly. There Is a small plastic tab sticking up in the o=ring area which prevents the seal from being perfect. Use a knife to remove this piece being very careful not to damage anything around it. the finished product should have no plastic tabs sticking up in the o-ring seat. you can see where I scraped mine up a little bit. Ideally this should be very smooth

Next to add another spring. Take the spring off the back of the plunger tube. You will most likely need to sand down the tube that slides beneath the spring if you wish to add another. I had a spring laying around that I got from a True Value, but use whatever works best for you.

After you do that, you shouldn't have to do any reinforcing, I padded the plunger with some felt bumpers. I have no Idea what the actual range that it shoots now is, But I would guess it is over forty feet flat with sonic micros, a few feet less with suckers, and streamlines are far too squirrely to tell how far they go. Taggers are the only option if you want to be able to hit what you shoot at. It is a pretty good gun overall, it would be a good backup to a slower loading primary, and it was a good addition to my arsenal.

The o-ring in mine is gray, not black like in every other Nerf gun I've seen. Has anyone else seen anything like this before?

A nf of mine had a grey O-ring, it was horrible and deformed soon after modding. Nice to see that the mod is so easy, although the walmart around me still doesn't have them. Is the stock made of the same mushy plastic bars the recon stock is made of?

The material is a bit thicker, but there is the same amount of stock wobble on the Spectre stock as on the Recon stock.

Nice write up, I like the clear pictures. But, would this really be considered an "overhaul"? It just seems like the basic modifications.

On the other hand, the guy who posted before me used the word 'fuck' a lot so he probably knows what he's talking about.

Agreed. Not much of an overhaul, but, still.
Congrats on being the first to do a write up on one of these.

Good looking blaster.
I have a question, does the Spectre still have the same priming bar design like the Maverick where it breaks easily?

I've been dying to see the internals of this thing. Very good write up.

Yeah, my fiend's (spelled that way on purpose. He has broken so many guns, it ain't funny.) Alpha Trooper had a grey o-ring. I thought it was wierd, so I slapped a Berserker o-ring in there- the seal was too perfect for the stock spring to move. The grey o-ring seemed very.... flimsy?
Anyway, glad to know these aren't a total loss. is the 40 foot range worth 1 less barrel?

Spud: I never had a problem with the mav's priming bar breaking, however the one on the spectre feels fairly sturdy. I don't think that it will be breaking any time soon.

I did some more official range testing today. It was very cold today about 32 Deg Fahrenheit so the ranges are just a bit lower than they could be. I was using unmodified sonic micros.
Flat it averaged 46 feet.
Angled it averaged 62 feet.
I would say i could fairly reliably hit a torso at about 50 feet or so. Making this my new favorite backup pistol.

I also found this to be much easier to mod than the mav, I don't know why but it was just a lot simpler for me.

The silver head: Heck yeah the range is worth losing one barrel. I like this gun so much more than the mav.

Nice mod! But like some others have said, it isn't exactly an overhaul.

MAN there seem to be lots of extra parts with little springs in there.

As far as the plunger tube attached spring stabalizer rod, or P.T.A.S.S.R, is that hollow and creating dead space in the plunger tube or is is solid? I see potential for easy pull-back modding for heavier springs.

The Difference:
-Guns shoot bullets that kill people
-Blasters shoot darts that tag people

I do not play with guns.

How big is the cylinder compared to the maverick's? They look similar in a few ways.

Just Some Bob is right that tube serves only as a guide for the spring, and for the loaded chamber indicator.

Durkadurka: the plunger tubes look to be almost identical in size. if anything the spectre's might be just a tad longer, but I can give no exact measurements at this time.

Nice clean write up. It looks like a great rushing side arm if you put a sling on it.

I was referring to the cylinder that holds the darts, but that info helps too.

Well I had some free time today and decided that my Spectre needed some pizzaz, so I crafted some grips for it out of Brazilian Rosewood just for fun. Hope you all like it.

I think it turned out great, so now not only does it shoot well, but it looks darn good too. And it is a heck of a lot more comfortable to hold and shoot.

Loving those wood grips. Do they fit in other handles from the N-Strike line? Ex: Recons, Raiders, Stampedes, etc.

The wood grips are super sexy! Did you simply just place them in stock grooves in the gun and glue them in or was there some sanding of the gun involved to get them to fit well?

@Durka The entire assembly is about the same length as the mav but the in the very bottom the last about 1/2 inch is tighter and actually pinches darts slightly. I notice a ring around the bottoms of some of my darts if they stay in the barrels for more than like 20min.

On the topic of this mod its pretty good. I was actually planning a similar write up the day this was posted but good job. Also my O-ring is also grey I was surprised by this as well.

As for the gun I really like it it’s a great back up and it shoots well. A few things I noticed though: The bit that comes off the back of the PT makes it nearly impossible to do a power stock without cutting the shell (which makes me sad) and adding some pvc or what have you. The PT doesn’t stop its travel by hitting the plunger part it bottoms out on the shell before they make contact. I’m not sure if this means that it will stress the shell to the point of braking or if it means you can add whatever springs you want to this thing and it will be good to go. Its probably going to be a lot easier to reinforce that part of the shell than it is to reinforce or replace the PT. Also I did a bit of test fitting and with a slightly larger o-ring 3/4 inch pvc would be a perfect PT replacement material. Food for thought.

Interesting. I thought exactly the opposite. Cut the back of it open, reinforce the inside, and fit in a small-diameter spring.

Well yeah I suppose that would work <_< . I guess what I meant was without modifying anything at all. It just would have been cool and handy to be able to open it up and pop a spring in there without having to do anything at all. I guess thats just the lazy side of me taking though. Maybe I'll try that in a few min. Gotta go hunt down some supplies. ( I work in Engineering at a hotel I can just kinda find random things to mod with.)

I'm hoping to finish my Spectre mod that I'm working on fairly soon.
I must say, your's looks spectacular. Definitely great for what I believe is the first writeup on NerfHaven for this blaster.

Now, I want to ask you a question. Are you going to PETG barrel this blaster? Just curious.

Well done, mine's been getting 40ish wit just the AR removals. I'm hoping to get a few more of these once they are fully realeased in order to do some Nite-spectres.

One note to anyone attempting this mod:

I don't know how it was for the OP, but pulling the orange piece off the end of the metal cylinder rod was EXTREMELY difficult for me. Way more so than the Maverick. I pulled as hard as I could for about 15 minutes before it finally gave way, but in the process I ended up flinging the orange end piece and the spring to god knows where in my room. I will probably eventually find it again, but for the moment I'm stuck with a non-working blaster because the thing was so damn difficult to pull apart.

So I guess if anything this is just a warning that it may take a lot of force, and to be careful not to lose the orange piece and spring.

Use a crowbar and hold down the orange peg with your hand when you pry, crowbar gives you a lot more control and your hand will hopefully stop the pieces from flying everywhere.
