They may not have high enough discharge rates to match the increased current draw the motor requires to pull stronger spring loads.

Every time I read a post by you, Zorn's lemma, or Cwxq I feel so stupid.What batteries are you using?

More relevant to the topic, he also could have put a part in slightly wrong. I know that doing that makes magstrikes go nuts.

Maybe your plunger rod catch is misaligned, or the spring fell out of place?
EDIT: Also, what type of batteries are you using? If you're just using standard AA then the current draw might be a problem with the added spring, like SGNerf mentioned.

I was using AA batteries temporarily. I had figured that it was just the discharge rate.What batteries are you using?
