[Edible Autopsy]

Hello all. I've come up with a new catch idea and didn't want to post it in the homemades thread yet, as I have not actually built it do to my lack of polycarbonate. Here's a decent MS paint diagram:



Basically, I've combined a CPT and RainBow catch, flipped upside down. For this system the catch notch would be on the bottom of the plunger rod, while the clothespin applies upward pressure on the catch. While plunger is pulled back the clothes pin will snap closed, catching on the catch notch just like any other catch.

Can you clarify the differences between yours and Carbon's in the link posted above? I can't see any apparent differences between them.

The only difference is the OP's catch goes all the way around the plunger rod. Something I'm sure Carbon would've done, seeing as he did a Tony Stark with his:

Looks like it would work, I can't see any obvious roadblocks. It would be a standard plate catch, but flipped around so that the clothespin acts as the catch spring. I personally would just use a standard catch spring. Go build it.

The difference is that Edible's is a standard RainBow catch flipped upside down, whereas mine comes from the plumbing aisle. They're functionally identical.

And that's a very appropriate clip, Brit. I did build my catch with a box of scraps. "Cave" is also a fair description of my workshop. Last week I found a mushroom growing in a hole in the concrete floor.

Holy monkies. I didn't expect so many responses. But as carbon and beaver said, it's just a flipped rainbow catch slightly simplified. I will be testing this as soon as possible, and will report back as soon as I do.

What would the practical advantage of your catch be?

To me it seems like you will need a square plunger rod, those are hard to get..(aren't they?)...

Second......how will you "mount" the catch assembly inside a tube?

But with the catch, Advantages would basically be the simplicity of the set up itself. I'm not entirely sure you would need a square plunger rod, seeing as how you would essentially do the exact same thing as the rainbow, just flip it upside down.

The only problem I can see is that your nail is going to be much longer, since you're connecting it up towards a more central catch, rather than a snap catch, which is only about 1/16 from the edges of the PT. The extra length of the nail may give the spring force some leverage to push the nail aside.

Well who said it had to be a nail? I could easily use a machine screw, I would just have to make the whole bigger. Also, the pressure isnt on the PT, theres guides on both sides of the catch taking the pressure like a regular catch, as shown in the diagram.

If you use a screw or bolt, you'll need to do something about the teeth, else they'll catch (and wear) on the sides of the hole in PVC.

Thats why i would make the hole bigger. The hole doesnt matter, its just an access point. The stress is on the catch guides on either side of the catch.
