M16's (full auto) are not legal for a civilian to own anywhere in the US (Penn included.) AR15's (semiauto) are legal for anyone to own anywhere. You may own one if eligible, but each state has different laws governing them. California is particuarly anal about theres. Not only can your AR not be full auto but post94 manufactured rifle have to follow the rules governing assault rifles as dictated by the Crime Bill of 94. This includes telescoping stocks, bayonet lugs, flash hiders, etc. And of course there are the standard rifle rules of a 16" or longer barrel and minimum 30" length. Even with all this restriction you can still make a badass rifle. Submachine guns ,like MP5's, are legal as long as they are considered a rifle or a pistol by the BATF.
I would like to get a lever action rifle sometime down the road. Probably in one of the original calibers like 38-55. There is just something damn impressive about em.
I've had the pleasure of shooting the DE in all three calibers. The 357 and the 44 are a pleasure to shoot. The Action Express will kick the living shit out of you. What's worse than the recoil is the damn muzzle flash... I don`t think its really all that possible to aim the thing. It is fun as hell though. I don't think I'd ever buy one though in any caliber. Too much money just to spend on the coolness factor.
You know its odd. At NHQ I posted a thread like this and all I got were resonses likte"why do you need all these guns" and "what's wrong with you?" But here we are actually having an in depth discussion about various guns. Just goes to show the difference between the members of the 2 sites......

I'm assuming you're referring to this thread. I agree, there is in fact a larger amount of us older nerfers here. But, only about 4 or so of the 15-odd guys who posted about these weapons sounded like how you described them. Most were as supportive as the guys here at NH. A lot of them are cross-over users, too. Ha ha, but there were more references to CS and Airsoft at NHQ. Guess it's a testament to their age.You know its odd. It's all moot for me, I just found out the carbon 15 is verboten in California.

You could... Almost all of the components in the AR15 family are common and interchangable. So you could put a stock of any kind on the Carbon 15 pistol. I am still not sure if a bolt carrier swap would be necessary or not. The pistol uses an extremely short buffer tube and the bolt carrier may be shorter and lightere than in a rifle. Anyway, that part is irrelevant. The problem is that as soon as you put a stock on there the gun is no longer a pistol is becomes an ultra short barreled carbine rifle. Also ultra illegal.Question, with that bushmaster pistol, couldn't you adapt an extendable stock to fit on there like someone did with the aeg version
There are 7.5" barrels and even 6" barrels out there for AR15's. No one has tried to make a pistol with these barrels before because the damn thing is too heavy to cantilever out in front of you with the aluminum receivers. The carbon fiber is light enough to actually use as a pistol.
You could never get a barrel as short as the one you have pictured on an actual AR15. AR's are gas operated, meaning high pressure gas is stripped from the barrel with a small port. The has to be a certain length before and after this port for the rifle to function. Six inches is the shortest I have seen. Of course with Airsoft none of this applies and also none of the laws apply. So you can pretty much do whatever you damn well please to the guns.

For Virginia:
You may legally posess a handgun at 18 and purchase one at 21.
For long guns there is no minimum age for possession but you must be 18 to purchase one.

I'd suggest a Beretta 9mm for beginners or people who don't want to deal with a lot of kick. They're just great all-around guns for target shooting. An H&K or Sig 9mm should be a similar experience though I haven't personally used them.
If you want to try something a little nastier than 9mm, I'd probably go a different route. Considering their light weight, Glocks are surprisingly easy to handle in larger calibers. It feels as if the plastic frame absorbs quite a bit of the kick for you and they are very well balanced. My wife has put a couple hundred rounds through my Glock 30 - but then she's pretty tough for a geek chick. In contrast to the smooth clicking and jolting action of the metal 9s, the plastic 45 is more of a sudden shove.
I know this probably doesn't need saying but since it's your first time at the range I'll say it anyway. If you use a two-hand grip with auto pistols, keep your off-hand under your main hand. Stay well clear of the slide for maximum future enjoyment of your limbs.

It's a Sig Sauer Compact P229. Very cool looking.
My backup choice? Well, if I can't use that, then...
... The Glock 30 will work. Looks cool.
The thing is, we're taking a lesson. How to properly fire/load/everything else.
We can also use multiple pistols throughout the day, although I'm mostly going to stay with the Glocks and Sigs.
We may also try a rifle or two, but I don't really plan on it.
<edit> For anyone who cares: This is the website of the range we plan on going to. </edit>

You guys are going about it in the right way, Ice. The key is to try whatever is available, and base your liking on the way the weapon handles, not by how it looks, or what you've seen on TV and movies or video games.
If you've never ever shot a handgun, I'd start with a .22 caliber. Really. You will develop the disciplines to properly handle a larger caliber handgun without "flinching" (the number one problem when new guys try out handguns). I've seen first timers put a round or three into the ground 30-40 feet in front of them because of that.
That said, also watch out for flying brass. Depending on which gun you are firing, some throw the brass straight up, some sideways, some at an angle, but if you get one on your arm, it can usually still be pretty hot after the firing cycle. That and always keep the muzzle downrange when dodging hot shells.
Boy, I wish I were in your shoes. Here on the island we just go into the hills and set up our targets. Have a great time at the range.

Oh yeah, hot brass can hurt. If you end up trying out the Glock 30, it tosses the brass over your right shoulder so make sure your buddy's face isn't there. Also, they'll probably teach you this since you're taking a class (good idea!) but most ranges require you to load your magazines while in the booth. Also, it's polite to rake up your brass when you're done. Keep a few of each caliber you shoot as souvenirs. That said, also watch out for flying brass. Oh yeah, Glock makes a nice 9mm too. If you're just curious what it feels like to shoot a Glock vs a traditional pistol you may want to try out their compact frame 9mm. More of an apples-to-apples comparison.
I agree with Piney about starting small, but I think 9mm is a small enough load for most people to shoot without it causing too much flinching. I'm not positive but I believe Glock even makes a ported 9mm for reduced kick and barrel flip.

Also, this should be a no-brainer tip, but whatever you do, dont put your thumb behind the slide on a handgun. That's assuming you'd like to have a thumb left after shooting.

That shotgun looks very similar to the one I have. I don't use it at all, but it was given to be by my Grandpa. Hopefully I'll get to go hunting this year, so I can test it out.
