I know many of you despise these 'Idea' posts, but I saw something recently that got me wondering if such a thing is possible for Nerf.

Mattel Tommy Burst

A cocking slide with 6 semi-stops with a 6 dart clip?

I'm simply posting this here to get people thinking more about auto spring-powered guns, which is a novel idea.

Rare early 60s tv commercial

You gotta read! And also, the Vulcan is a spring powered automatic, so they aren't so "novel".

My dad mentioned having something like this, but he said it had hard plastic bullets. Unfortunately, the softer ammunition we know and love to use with nerf guns is MUCH harder to make feed mechanisms for. So, reverse engineering this particular device would probably not lead anywhere.

If I had to make something like this, I'd probably just prime multiple springs in parallel, which would be more consistent than multiple stops on a single spring.

edit:

Also, a spring powered automatic WOULD be novel if it worked (the vulcan rarely does), and especially if it didn't use batteries.

Sort of. The Vulcan is battery powered in automatic mode, while merely spring powered in single fire mode.

Could you imagine the kind of outrage that would happen today if some company decided to make toy guns that were replicas of real ones?

Anyway, having multiple stops for a single spring would make it hard to get any great ranges because of the short plunger travel for each shot. The only way to get around this would be to have a huge plunger tube.
