Hey Guys. I recently designed one of my own nerf/dart guns. It uses a spring to compress the air, much like most nerf guns as well as airsoft guns too. Here is a link to my webpage with more info on it:
Scorpion LDR
There should be a youtube vid of it on the page too, tell me what you guys think.

*sigh* Why do people paint their guns black? Because they are "cool" being black in movies/games?

Although the design looks nice, walking with that on the streets might end in receiving a few holes instead of stefan bruises.......

I really like it. Cosmetics, performance and everything. How accurate is it with the scope/sights?

Nice! But as pjotrkuh said, I'm not sure painting it totally black is a good idea. If your neighbor or someone sees it, chances are they'll call the police.

Way to make a completely useless post. If you want to have your own thread, then you need to actually provide some pictures in it, preferably a whole write-up for the construction. If you are not inclined to share that information with us, then you should just post a pic in the homemades pictures thread and leave it at that.

Good job on the gun but I would like to see some disassembled pictures of the gun so I can see the particulars of how it works.

This takes me back to the bad ol' days...seriously, that paint job? Bad idea. But your fabrication skills are impressive. I'd love to see some detailed internal photos.

I like the design, but just like everyone else said, the paintjob is a no go. From what I understand, the bolt pushes the cylinder ( or plunger tube) back compressing the spring. Like others have also said, please post pictures of the internals.

To clear up everyone questions:

1. This gun isnt used to shoot people (due to shear power) in nerf games, so it is rarely exposed in public. When it is exposed, the mock silencer can be removed and another one with a .5 inch orange tip. State law requires .25 inch or greater orange tips to show that it is a toy gun.

2. This gun was made to be used as a technology demonstrator, or an idea or concept to work off of, so I never put in the extra time to make it have the field stripping capability. Because of that, I can't post pictures of the internals, BUT I have been working on a new one and once it is finished, I will show the internals because it can field strip.

3. Finally, to the people who think my post isn't large or detailed enough: Deal with it. I didn't have much time to put this together, plus I didn't have the pics on the computer I was using. Not to mention that all the details, specs, plus some were included on my page. Also this is my first post, so don't expect me to have the most amazing, jaw dropping posts.

I know you've already addressed the PJ, but paint it an eye-raping neon color! Like, orange or green, that's be sweet.

Very nice though, looks like it could be fun to use.

None of those reasons are good excuses. Did you actually read the Code of Conduct? Also, you can't just upload the pictures directly to the forum, so their location is not relevant. Hell, just copy and paste it all from your site. The real issue is that you don't even give any real description of how it operates.

The description of operation is on my page, as I said. I really dont care about what your telling me because it apparently is
easy enough to understand if all these other users get the main concept of its operation.

The Scorpion LDR with accessories
Posted Image
and without

This is newest rifle to the ricochet armory. The name came from the sting it delivers (scorpion) and Long Distance Rifle (LDR). It is about 3.5 feet in length, which to me, is rather compact for a PIMPIN rifle. It has an effective range of 80-100 feet and has a max range of at least 115-125 feet. The LDR also has plenty of power to punch through half inch Styrofoam with ease.

Goals:

Distance- achieved
Power- achieved
Durability- achieved
Field striping- unsuccessful

Accuracy- achieved
Ability for optional accessories- achieved
Compact- partially achieved

One thing I was unable to put into the LDR was a high or medium rate of fire. The rate of fire on the LDR is slow due to it having to be breach loaded. The reason I didn't incorporate a magazine for a higher rate of fire is as follows. First off, my previous designs had magazines, but they all failed. By eliminating the magazine, the chance for magazine failure or jams were eliminated as well. Second, long range rifles don't need a high rate of fire because of their purpose for shooting from afar as well as maintaining stealth. Lastly, a large reason for why I made the LDR was as a technology demonstrator, so there was no need for fancy add ons.

Sights: The sights used on the LDR are just a basic flip up iron sight. The fore sight is a "blade" or "post" type sight, and the rear sight is a "notch" sight.
Posted Image

Darts:

The darts fired from the LDR are homemade as well. They consist of a weighted tip and a foam body. The weighted tip is made with custom molds and 3 different materials. The body of the darts are .5 inch foam backer rod that was cut to 4.5 centimeters in length.

Mechanism:

The mechanism used in the LDR is a spring mechanism. This mechanism works by using a piston, spring, and cylinder. The piston is connected to the spring and it rides inside of the cylinder. When the bolt is pulled back, the piston compresses the spring and is held in place by the trigger. As the bolt is pushed forward, it moves the cylinder forward, thus creating an air space. Once the trigger is pulled, the piston launches forward pushing the air in the cylinder into the barrel and launching the dart. The LDR's mechanism is also used in airsoft guns and nerf guns as well.
Posted Image
Breach: This is the most of the mechanism and internals at the moment, its not much, but its still something.

Power Tests: As the pictures that follow will show, the LDR has a HUGE power factor to it. The darts plowed straight through .5 inch styrofoam, burried themselves in a 2 inch styrofoam block, and penetrate cardboard.

The main external componenents, bolt, and barrel are mostly PVC or CPVC. The rest is custom made with a couple materials in each part. For example, the trigger sear that I made consisted of layered lexan, steel, and PVC rain gutter cover...thats partially the reason these guns take so long to make.

I can't show with pictures for this specific gun, but I can always explain OR when I finish the new one I am working on I will try to get internal pics to help answer your questions...they will have the same firing system.

For me, it's amazing. With the exception of the SCAR, I personally think it's one of the coolest, non air rifles out there. Personally, I love the paintjob, but keep a orange tip on it. Man, I would KILL so badly to be able to make one of these. It looks just like a m24, personally.

Final question, what magnification is the scope? Airsoft scope? 4x or 9x? Thanks!

P.S> If you got the mech from some other post that has detailed instructions, I would love for you to post it so I could try to make a similar rifle. Although it looks fairly complicated.
