BuzzBee Toys Glo-Laser + Cobra Products Drain-Blaster

A couple people requested a writeup, so here goes. Expect brevity and minimal step-by-steps. I took these pictures post-creation.

The Glo-Laser is a “sound & light” toy that BuzzBee distributed. It appears that it is now rebranded as the True Heroes Light-Runner ($25 at Toys R Us). I thought it was an awesome-looking (and great-feeling) shell so I wanted to do something with it. At first I tried making a homemade springer to fit within it, but I had neither the time or motivation to get that done right. When I noticed the Cobra Products Drain-Blaster ($25 at Lowes) I thought the two might fit well together…and they do!

Essentially what you end up with is a comfortable rifle-style blaster that offers one big punch of a shot (it actually has a bit of recoil if you pump beyond 10). The downside is the rate of fire – you have to muzzle load each shot individually & then pump it up.

This blaster may be too powerful for kids, it will likely take an eye out if used irresponsibly. I assume no responsibility for your foolishness ;D.

To start off, I sawed apart the Glo-laser in some key areas:


Next, I attached CPVC to the drain-blaster w/ epoxy. I used a longshot(?) faux barrel to cover the CPVC.


I then fashioned a wire (clothes-hanger) to go from the Glo-laser trigger to the drain-blaster trigger, so that you can pull the Glo-laser trigger to fire the blaster.


I used electrical tape to connect the drain-blaster to the Glo-laser shell. It also served to hide the trigger system. I then re-attached the rifle stock to the end with more tape.



Done:





And for lack of a better name, I will dub this the Cobra Laser.

Range Tests:

I took 4 shots at 155 feet with a level barrel & 20 pumps. 3 out of 4 shots hit my buddy Kevin at 155 feet. The 1 out of 4 bounced in front of Kevin and hit him in chest - this is because I lost some air pressure due to the fact that I pulled the trigger too slowly (it's a bitch to pull that trigger with so much pressure behind it).

If you watch these videos in HD you can just make out the dart coming toward the camera.

All in all, effective range is at least 155 feet. Too powerful ! ! !

Looks pretty cool. I bet you could cut a slot on the top of the shell where the logo is and make it breech-loading.

Wow, right after I threw away one of my faux barrels, too. This is awesome, however, and very clean. The e-tape for a stock seems like it would be unstable, though. is it? Anyways, great job, all this needs is a nice breech.

This is definitely possible. I’ve never messed w/ making a breach so I didn’t try.

I was worried about this too, but it’s actually very stable. The e-tape really keeps it together quite well.

Okay, did a quick search, but didnt find anything close....

Has anyone tried pump or trigger relocation on one of these cobra drain blasters? I ask because I've got a couple water guns I'd really like to do conversion work on, and I understand that these give all the power I could need and more.

It'd be really nice if I could get that information before I start building stuff. so that I cn take that into concideration while picking my internals.

Looks to me like he did relocate the triger, just didn't remove the old one.

Strictly speaking he didn't relocate the trigger, but installed a linkage to operate the trigger remotely. However I suppose I wasn't concise enough.

Yes. I have also cut apart a leaky one. I will post pictures soon.

Just googled it, Amazon has one for about $20 from $25. I'd guess a store like Home Depo would have them for about $25.

I dislike air guns for the necessity of pumping, lowering their RoF. I'd like to see just how far you could optimize the required pumping with this and find a nice balance of good RoF and reasonable range.

When I was contemplating how to make this blaster, I considered separating the pump from the rest of it, but I wasn't sure if each component was self-contained. I would love to see a cross-section of the drain-blaster.

I got mine at Lowes for $25. It was in the plumbing section.

I would estimate that 12 pumps gets you ~100 feet.

Overkill was kind of the point of making this blaster. I just wanted to see how far it could shoot. I never have, and never will, shoot a person with it over 10 pumps at close range. It would just be too dangerous.

Thanks. If I can atleast relocate the pump, that will help. If possible i'd like to try replumbing it to use a magstrike pump. I might still have to work out a trigger linkage though
