I've been painting and modding Nerf guns for a while now, and it seems that when finishing, there are two options: 1) leave the paint unfinished, so it either cannot be excessively handled, or the paint will wear and you'll end up repainting it or 2) clear coat it, and deal with that awful sticky clear coat feeling. Also, vinyl dye doesn't wear, but that's not terribly economical, especially if I'm painting in anything other than black. Has anyone ever found a method to get rid of or reduce that clear coat stickiness? I'm sorry if this has been discussed before somewhere else, but I couldn't seem to find it anywhere.

Thanks

I use spray on poly urethane. It works really well, is only about 2 dollars a can at Menards, and I have NEVER gotten that sticky residue you are talking about. I also wait about a day and a half before I handle it.

Get different clear coat.

You'll want something like a clear acrylic sealant.

Hand paint it with acrylic sealant. It will stay and you can control where it goes so it doesn't bunch up.

Try a matte finish clearcoat. I use one from the Games Workshop, as I also use their paints. Write-up and details are in my signature.

Wait until the base coat is completely dry then apply Krylon crystal clear coat. It dries in under an hour to the touch and is not sticky at all. And the can costs like 3 bucks and will clear a lot of guns before you run out. Just let the gun dry, otherwise the oils in your hands seep in and the paint never seems to dry where you hold on to it. It will also turn a nasty brown color.
