Hey everyone, I have been reading NerfHaven for years and finally got approved
with an actual account so here is my most recent mod that I did, and I did a write
up. I wanted to make sure that I included as much as I could, as well as some high
quality images of the internals as I had not seen any anywhere. I hope you all enjoy
and I appreciate all of the awesome fun I have gotten from reading this forum over
the years!

Steps:

1) Take your Double Shot out of the packaging and make sure it fires properly.
If it does not get at least 15-20ft of range (approximate stock) then you
should promptly return it to the store and get a replacement. (image 1)
Posted Image

2) Assuming that it fires properly, then remove the 2 stickers on the left side
of the Double Shot. (image 2)
Posted Image

3) Then turn the Double Shot over and get a peice of paper. I have drawn the
outline of the Double Shot, as well as numbered almost all of the screw holes.
(Note- while performing this mod, I decided that screws 9, 11, and 13 [which
is just to the left of 6] are not touched in this mod, therefore they are
not taped to the sheet.) Once you have drawn the outline, proceed to remove
the screws and lay them out at their proper places on the sheet. Several of
these screws are different sizes so this is very useful. Tape the screws
onto the sheet. If this is your first mod, you will thank me later. Remove
the yellow screw housing that holds the green ammo cover. Remove the green
ammo cover as well. (images 3 and 4)
Posted Image
Posted Image

4) Use a small, thin flat head screw driver and GENTLY pry the body loose just to the
left of screw hole 4, and then on the top of the body between screw holes 3 and 5.
Carefully pry the body of the Double Shot apart. (images 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9)

Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

5) You will notice that the plugers, as well as the springs on their retaining clips
might pop out of place. This is OK! DO NOT PANIC! I have included detailed photos
of how things should go together. Surprisingly enough, the internals on this gun
are way easier to re-situate than even the internals on a Maverick pistol!

6) Remove the barrel retaining clip and the oval with the 2 black seat rings on it.
Cut knot off of the pulley rope up near the barrel. The knot is glued together,
you are wasting your time if you try to untie it. Remove the black pulley under
the plungers (this is trash and can be thrown away). (images 15 and 16)
Posted Image
Posted Image

7) Once you have cut the knot, pull the rope out and then remove the black pulley
assembly from the rear of the body. KEEP THE ROPE THREADED THROUGH THIS ASSEMBLY.
The reason for this, is that the pulley system at the rear will keep the rope pulling
properly on the plunger and will reduce strain on the parts. Remove the plungers
with the pulley system and the rope, all as one unit. (images 17, 18, 19, and 20)
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

8) Remove the two black plunger retaining clips, and the springs that hold them in place.
Remove the trigger as well as the spring beneath it. (images 21, 22, and 23)
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

9) Prep the parts and area for painting. I highly suggest painting the body parts first
and do not worry about masking off the barrels yet. It will be easier to paint if you
can hold on to them at the end. (Note- tape off the rear side of the barrel assembly.
You do not want paint clogging up your ejection system.) (image 24... well sort of)
Posted Image

10) Paint the body. Then tape off the body portion of the barrel assembly, and paint the
barrels. I would mask off the first half-inch of the barrels with tape, so no paint
gets into the barrels, and if you choose not to reconnect the included orange tip, you
will still have orange visible on the end (some feel the tip interferes with the darts).

*** Painting Tip - go over your Double Shot very lightly, just misting it with spray paint.
You can do 2-3 passes of this mist and it will result in a very clean and very full coat.
Allow this to dry to a tacky state and repeat with 1-2 more mists. Then allow to fully
dry. You can do another coat if you feel it is necessary, or to clean up any spots that
need touching up. I hang my parts from coat hangers to allow for touch free
painting, as well as worry free drying. (images 25 and 26)
Posted Image
Posted Image

11) Take the pulley system and place it into the back of the gun. Note right at the end of
the body there is a little ledge, mark this area. (images 27 and 28)

12) Remove the pulley system, and place the two rear body parts back together. Drill where
you marked for the hole. You will want to drill a nice 3/8th" to 1/2" hole here for the cord
to come out properly. You will also want to smooth the edges very well so that it does not
fray the rope.(images 29, 30, and 31)
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

13) Take the barrel and saw it off about 1" in front of the "handle" on the barrel. Take
the remaining end of the barrels and break them apart carefully a little at a time with
your pliers, or a hacksaw. It helps to unscrew the 9 and 11 screws that are in them.
The goal here is to remove the front attachment (orange) without breaking it.
(images 32, 33, 34, 35, and 36)
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

**Note- I did some additional painting here on the barrel and the trigger areas.

14) Now, carefully reassemble your internals. I started with the plunger and the seal area,
then put in the pulley assembly and pulled the rope through the hole in the back.
Next I put in the 2 plunger retaining clips and springs, and then I finished up with
the trigger spring and trigger. (images 37, 38, 39, and 40)
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

15) Now, put the body back together, and replace screws 12, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10.
Test the cocking mechanism. If it works perfectly, then replace the ammo cover and its
screw holders, and then replace screw 1. Test out your barrel. It should drop to a 90
degree angle now, and the shells should eject more at a straight up and down angle.

16) Now, take a key-ring, or carabiner, and run the rope through it and tie it off close to
the body of the Double Shot. Trim off the excess rope. (images 43, 44, 45, and 46)

Bonus Shell Mod

I was able to get a really good distance on my darts, 33 feet from one wall to the
next, and it hit about 6ft high on the wall. I am estimating it could have gone 40 easily.
First thing I did was to trim the "plus sign" edges off of the ends of the pegs (images
47 and 48).
Posted Image
Posted Image

This only gave me about 25 feet. I then went and yanked the entire peg out
of the shell with pliers. The best way to do this was to twist it left and then right.
It would usually break off at the base. I then cut off about 1 cm off the stock whistler
darts I have (images 49, 50, 51, 52, 53).
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image
Posted Image

The reason I broke the posts out was because when I cut my darts, they didnt go in any
farther. I realized that due to the makeup of the air restrictor assembly, the pegs were
hitting the tip of the darts. When I removed the peg, the dart could go in all the way
and there was much more airflow.

****************************************************

I will be doing a video soon, with the 90 degree break in the barrel, the shells eject
much better and about 90% of the time I can catch them both in one hand. It looks pretty
awesome if you ask me So, I want to do a video for you all to see. I personally
love the ejection feature.

Thank you again for reading, and let me know if you have any feedback!

***UPDATE***
Got the maintenance guys at work to pull out the super long measuring tape.
Using STOCK Nerf Whistler dart, with 1cm shaved off of the end of each one...

54' Seriously. I think I fired them at about a 20 degree angle from just
above waist and just under chest height (I am just at 6' tall).

So, yeah, I would say that anyone that is only getting 4' out of their DS
either has a bad one, or should do the mod with the shells, I for one do
not see a reason to remove the restrictor fully, as it does direct the air
in a much more controlled and confined burst. Who knows, I might be
crazy... Wait.. I did spend a lot of time on this post, and then came and
udpdated it like I said i would... Guess that answers that :P

ENJOY EVERYONE!!!

I love the DS because of its action or “realocity” of the way it works. If this mod will help me take greater advantage of the fact the shells friggin fly out, then this is a solid mod by me!

I can’t wait to see your 47 page LS write-up :P

j'skiddn, the write-up is great.

Good point, I am used to shooting over cubicle walls at work, so about a 20 degree angle is what we shoot
with day in and day out :P

I will get a level today hopefully and take some new range measurements.

Final Update (as per Just Some Bob's request ;) haha)

43-46' at a 0 degree angle. tool used, digital level that was re-calibrated 2 times during this test
and still resulted in the same ranges amongst 7 darts. 1 shot misfired and made it 23'
the others were all withing a few feet of each other in the 43-46' range.

Note, these were a mixture of 4 black tip orange body whistlers and 3 black body orange tip whistlers
all with 1cm cut off the rear.

Height fired from was shoulder height so a little over 5' high I believe, and the ambient temperature
is in the mid 70's (indoor office). Little to no humidity.

I was wearing a t-shirt, and had my hair in a ponytail, and I do not believe there were any additional
things that could have influenced the test ;)

Ha ha... Bob, I hope you and your engineer friends got a laugh out of that, as well as some useful
information.

oh, p.s. I was hungry at the time. Still am now, perhaps ill get dinner.

-Robert ;)

I'm going to have to do this to my double-shot when I get the chance. I love how you made the screw replacement guide! My screws are jumbled together in a Tupperware container. I'll have to do that.

I am definitely going to try this shell mod on my shells as I only get 30 feet with about the same mods as you. Also, I will post how the mod effects my ranges for all the people who are thinking about doing the mod but unsure if it will help.

Good god. Sexiest working/looking Double Shot ever. Definitely doing this next time I get my hands on a DS.

Pretty sure it'll get 40 flat. But also consider the next 2 things
  • It has no spring addition/replacement
  • It has no air-seal improvement
  • Uses no stefans
  • And finally, there's no barrel/shell improvement (other than the Pegs in the shells)
With those finishing touches, I think you could make it shoot 60 ft, maybe even 70'.

Well pinz you can not do 2 of those things and they are spring replacement and air seal improval because the only way to get to ds springs is to cut the actual plunger tubes.

Oh. I was Un-Aware of that. But still, using stefans and barrel improvement could make the ranges go to around 50'-60'.

Also, if anyone can post the diameter of the plunger tubes (both inner and outer) to see if I can fix that no-spring-mods without-fucking-your-gun-up problem.

So, as I promised I have performed the peg mod to the shells and they work wonders. Then, realizing many people have done this I compared them to CPVC'd shells and the ones without the pegs work significantly better. Also, the 90 degree drop has been done multiple times before including my write-up on the flintlock pistol version. However, this one might be the cleanest I have seen as well as a sick paint job so great job shinma! Also, good idea to keep the orange things on the end since you painted it realistic colors.

Thank you Captain! I am pretty amazed, that so many people have viewed this mod, and I really
am flattered with the compliments on the paint job.

I am trying to find another good mod to do. I tend to try to keep my mods to things
that can be done without new barrels etc, because I like the idea that people without
access to certain materials could do my mods :)

On a side note-I did pick up the new CS-35 with the drum clip at my local walmart... was 29.95 and had 2 drums
and 70 darts with it. Downside is that it doesn't seem to be any better than the Recon CS-6.
So, I think I might be returning this one. It was great to get the extra drum, but its mostly
useless if the gun cant shoot effectively at a high rate of speed for me ;)

Might I suggest doing something with the other Buzz Bee shotgun, the Rapid Fire Rifle. There are not many mods done for this as it will not currently reach the ranges needed for a primary, but you have already modified shells for it and a simple nightfinder spring added to the stock will get you about the same ranges as your double shot. I myself am working on making it a bolt-action rifle. Even though this has been done already I still think the idea is really cool.

I actually bought that one at the same time. I wasn't very happy with it, yet once I did the shell
mod and used the Nerf Whistler darts that I cut down to size, it fixed the reload issues and the
shells were able to feed properly. I think I had only 1 mishap out of 12 shells!

If you own that gun you will know that is unheard of, especially when I tell you that was shooting
and cocking the gun as fast as I possibly could.

Also, the ranges were about 1/2 of what my Double Shot got. but a large portion I am sure
is due to the barrel situation again. I was going to return it, but I will look into modding it
now that you mention it.

I do wish the clip was larger, on another note... I have another Double Shot that is just cut
down in size, no other mods... what to do... what to do...

Well, I do own that gun and that is pretty uncommon. The mods I have done so far are sawing off the barrel right where the yellow foregrip is, spring addition, and shell mod. This gets me ranges comparable to your double shot. Also, when I nerf we mostly use single shot guns. This being said I lose the clip and keep shells loaded in my pocket (I have over 15) and shove one in the barrel from the opening in the side. However, I have been looking at the clip and it seems like a simple design that you might be able to enlarge or if you have two you could make a "flip clip" version.

P.S. While nerfing the feel of shoving in shells and the shell ejection never gets old.
