FULL VIDEO WRITE-UP

I've always known there was a lot of potential inside an Airtech 3000. The 3k's tank in comparison to a 2k or the identical 1.5k tank, is quite a bit bigger. 3ks also have less dead space than 1500s and 2ks. So I finally decided to modify one to my standards. First order of business was removing the automatic rotation mechanism. Most of the modifications I wanted to do were in the way of this. Plus, manual rotation is just as fast. I didn't take any step by step pictures for you guys because I'm not a fan of spoon feeding. But you should get the idea.

All turreted air guns that aren't rear-loading suck to use. So I had to make it rear-loading.

Posted Image

Drill holes into the back of the turret (1/2"). Next you'll have to either hot glue or epoxy putty the miniature holes in between the holes for the actual barrels. Take an hobby knife or sand down the excess so it's flush with the base of the turret and your barrels. Next I had to beef up the spring for the manual part of rotation mech. I used a random spring I found in my parts bin.

To keep the rotation mech from spinning in circles and not actually doing it's job, I cut a small strip of polycarbonate. I drilled and tapped new holes attaching the piece of polycarbonate to a piece on an existing piece of the gun. This keep the top piece from moving freely and allows the rotation mech to do it's job. Make sure you line up the rotation mech with your barrels.

For the seal on the turret, I used two 1/8" thick rubber washers glued together. They have an ID of about 9/16" or a little bigger than a half inch. To fit the two washers on the front of the tank, dremel down the existing connection between the airtank and the turret. Now you have a much better seal, basically as good as it gets. Make sure you lube it up when done.

Hopefully these pics explain my rambling.

Posted Image

Next order of business was to replace the pump. One of the downfalls to the 3k is the pump. It's too wide in diameter. This makes it harder to get higher pressures in the airtank as opposed to a skinny 2k pump. I used a Hornet pump in this case. It fit in the shell nice, and is nice and long and perfect for this application. Zeke also suggested using a RF20 pump.

Posted Image

I wrapped some electrical tape around the outside of the Hornet pump. 3/4" PVC fits over it nice with a few wraps. To fit the Hornet pump in the 3k shell, you have to take out the dremel.

First cut the front of both halves like so.

Posted Image

Then dremel down these parts. Doesn't have to be clean, no one will see it.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Almost done. The hornet pump now comes out the side of gun and the vinyl tubing is outside the case. I did this because I eventually would like to get this hooked up to a small hardtank that I can get 6-8 shots off without pumping. But this works for now..

Posted Image

Do a bic pen mod, or glue the spring on the end of the firing pin.

Posted Image

Don't forget to cut the slot for the rear loading.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

If you did everything correctly, you'll now have a beast.

And since someone will eventually ask, I haven't officially range tested it yet, since it's dark. Although comparative to my 1500 which gets 120+ ranges, it out ranges it. That's with six pumps. Very impressive.

Keep in mind, I'm a freak about dart/barrel fit, so results may not be as dramatic for you. But you'll definitely notice a giant improvement over simple barrel replacements. I can't wait to try this Saturday.

Enjoy.

Beautiful work there dude! Like seriously. Thats the kinda shit I'm into, milking a gun for all its worth! Two things I think you left out though, how does the auto advance operate with a new pump, and what did you do for the seal from the tank to the turret now that there are 1/2" holes in the back?

You need to give it a sick paintjob though! And how's your dart fit in the PETG? My 3K is just like CXWQ's and the darts nearly fall out because the fit is so loose and I'm using modded streamlines. I want a tighter fit without going to brass.

P.S. I would so do this to one of my 3k's, but all the materials to do it are up on eBay right now. DAMN.

Actually, I covered both of those things in my original post. Read again.

I'm probably thinking of painting is gold, and that red I used for the pump handle and faux tank.

My darts vary from batch to batch like all foam does, but Ace foam, when heated correctly, has the perfect air gun fit in OMC's thickwalled PETG. Loose enough to blow the darts down the barrel without much effort, but snug enough to not move around in the barrels. Brass sucks because it isn't transparent, which I like having the ability to check what barrels are loaded.

Ryan needs his hudge barrels to assert his awesome! I'll admit they're a little ungainly, but they'll do wonders for accuracy. Beautiful as always ryan, I might almost want to salvage my 3k to do this.

Yes, you do. Proper 1500s take one foot barrels (or nested equivalent), and this looks to put out roughly fifteen to thirty percent more air.

Seems I spoke out of turn. Ryan's 1500 takes a foot, Split's takes six inches, whatever.

Ryan, props. I'll get mine done at the mod party tonight.

Nice, I like it. I also enjoy 3k's modded to their full potential. On mine I airflow modded it and improved the seal, but kept the auto-rotation, even though this means no rear-loading. It really depends on what you value more. Once again, nice job.

You're correct, but not with regards to barrel length. Ryan is already a dominating force with an SM1500. Six shots at greater range? In his hands, yeah, too much.

Seriously, great work. I look forward (???) to being shot at by that beast tomorrow.

Glad you guys like it.

The 12" barrels may be a bit unnecessary but it doesn't hurt it. I've never had luck with shorter barrels, maybe if I had a tigher dart-barrel fit.

Posted Image

This is what is used to paint. This shit is the bomb.

EDIT:

Just to note, this modification wasn't easy. If you've done a rear-loading 1500, which I found easy, this was a lot more work and more difficult. So just keep that in mind before you rip apart your 3k.

What would be the max amount of pumps with the Hornet /RF20 pump that the 3k can take? Also is the piece of Polycarbonate holding the rotation mech to the shell, could you elaborate a bit?

Couldn't you cut down the pump so all the tubing is internal?

The yellow balls are also slightly smaller in diameter than the green ones.

I tried this out today, and what most impressed me is how well the hornet pump works.

Anyways, this gun is unfair. I glad you only used it for one round at Chano 3.

I am wondering if the tubing can be kept internal. Can you push the hornet pump back a bit in the shell so the tubing goes through the original window, and then extend the pump length so it still pumps it all the way? The mod looks great though.

Yes the tubing can be kept internal. I kept the tubing external because I want to hook it up to an external airtank in the future, which was stated in the first post.

The hornet pump in at the place in the shell where I can get a full stroke out of the Hornet pump. If you pushed it back to the end you would have 1-1.5" less pump stroke. That is unless you dremel or hack the shit out of the case.

Very, very nicely done. Some day I'll post my write-up of my "Unfair AT3K" and "Unfair AT4K" (Basically the Unfair Gun applied to the air-tech series with seal improvement). I actually made a 3K with an expanded tank I need to post up. It's quite a beast. I do like the pj. Keep the good work coming. Oh yeah, and do hook it up to a "hard case." You'll be glad you did.

Yeah I would but, people are already getting on my case about unfair weapons, so I probably won't ever use that setup at a war. The 3k itself without the hard tank is just retardedly awesome. But that is exactly what my plan was in the beginning. I need to get a 4k so I can try this to that.

But right now, this is my new project. The "2k of doom".

Have fun with that palm sander.

I think your problem was that you ended up sanding down the ridges the rotation mech attaches to, rather than just everything around that.

Damn Ryan. Stop, stop now...I need to finish mine first...

What is it taht you used though to fill in around the base of the petg?

Also, is that a rubber washer you used there? That was what I was planning to do to mine, suggested to me by a friend. Did you just like, sand the entire back part flat before aplication of the washer? (minus the gears of course).

Yeah probably. The 2k rotation mechanism is a lot easier to work with because I don't have to do all that sanding like I did on the 1500.

I use six pumps, which if you read, I already explained. But I have pumped it up to 12 and had no problems. The 3k tank is pretty resilient.
