Well well well. Another month another assload of stupid n00bs. What's an admin to do? For starters I've kicked Karma implementation into high gear. Since I'm at home for the next 5.5 weeks that should be here real soon now.

We're averaging over 900 unique visitors a day and they're coming from all over. One of my favorite stupid games is following some of those hits back to the source forum and trying to locate the post with the NH link. No mean feat when a typical forum has a broken or member-restricted search function.

Here are a few for you... go wild.

1338 visits this month from JesusFreakHideout.com - Mmmmmkay.

471 visits this month from ffinsider.net - We end up on a lot of video game forums.

234 visits this month from Summer Kick Off - By their 16 members?

218 visits this month from Something Awful - Pay to read a forum?! No thanks.

118 visits this month from Tazoon - Database error... nice.

77 visits this month from Camp Meriwether - Possible war site? <g>

Actually, turns out the hits from JesusFreakHideout were from some asshole hotlinking his favorite avatar here. I've had to disallow hotlinking because of it.

But at least they're not talking about us!

Can you trace the others back to a direct thread? I wonder what people have been linking to us for. I can only imagine what the SA goons have to say about NH.

No, the referral link just shows me the general topic view cgi without arguments. So I'd get, for example, http://nerfhaven.com/forums/index.php? in the logs

Tells me it's from a particular forum but not where in the forum.

What karma?

Does it happen to be anything like GameFAQs.com, where you can only post a number of messages per hour/day depending on your karma?

Or am I way off here?

No, it's rather more like the Slashdot Karma, though there are certain similarities.

There's a very old thread here with some details. A few things have changed in the current (in-progress) implementation, but the basics are the same.

Actually, Cx, some of the hits may be from NHQ. I've noticed a number of folks hotlinking avatars from the NH gallery to use in their NHQ profiles.

Yeah, I was aware of those but didn't want to be a bitch to fellow nerfers. Doesn't matter now since that jesusfreakhideout guy forced me to disallow hotlinking. Know anyone here who's a jesus freak and uses the Fry avatar? Yeah...

1.35k x 29,871 hits = 40 megs of bandwidth stolen by a "Christian". That was only about 2% of our total traffic during that time period, but it's still kind of irritating.

You know what?

I highly doubt the karma thing will work out... This is essentially a message board where newbies and veterans all together work and help each other out; not one of those completely social-based life forums... Then again, some of us do spend alot of time here.

I'd suggest just hiring new moderators every set period of time; people who are noted in helping others out, not being an asshole, etc. This way, we have better control over everything.

Just my two cents for today.

And about the linking... How do they eventually find us? Web search?

And I suggest you shut your fucking cake-hole. But that's just my constructive criticism. Anyways, I think its NH's unique blend of set Moderators that give it such appeal. Why should these forums adapt to the needs of the newbs? That's what NHQ and Nerf Evolved are for.

Yeah honestly, let's give the karma system a chance before we dissmiss its utility all-together. If you're worried about getting hammered by it...well then you probably deserve to.

I think the Karma system is the right step for NHQ. Doesn't it help give recognition to people who deserve it? Like the good members of the forums get benefits?

um...if you meant NH then i agree, and karma basically just helps to show who's a shit and who isn't.

if you really were talking about NHQ, well, i don't think it would work for 2 reasons: 1) who would program it? 2) there are just too many people, and massive adjusting from the way we'd do it here would be needed. i think the random moderator privaleges would tend to fall into the wrong hands more often over there.

there are just too many people

Lately there have been an average of 20-30 people online here at the same time in the evenings. I'm not sure how many there are online at NHQ on average but the recent numbers here scare me.

At "Summer Kick Off" I noticed the penguin holding the gun avatar in use by "Dustay." This could explain the hits.

Yeah, with the notable exception of the SA hits, most were people hotlinking Julie's excellent avatars. Sadly, I've had to disallow hotlinking on the server.

I did make an exception for NHQ so people can post pics from our mods or whatever if it's useful in a discussion over there. I don't mind hotlinking so much when it benefits the community.
