So I Removed The Ar's On My Raider.

But the barrel is loose.

As a result of the drilling to get out the pesky assembly in the Raider's breech, the inside of the barrel was worn away slightly. There is still a significant range increase from the mod but the loose barrel makes it almost the same as dry-firing.

Does anyone have any ideas for fixing this? I'm mostly concerned about stress on the plunger (I padded it but it doesn't do enough) but harnessing the full potential with a tighter barrel would also be great. I was thinking of putting barrel material in the breech like brass or PETG, but I don't have either of those. I am curious to see if there are any alternatives.

I only see 2 3 ways of fixing the problem.

1. Gen wider darts. (This is not a realistic solution because it would involve getting new foam, and then making sure that you only used those darts for the Raider.)

2. Go get barrel materials. (This is a realistic solution because it would allow you to use your current darts and would not take that much effort. You can order petg from OMC even if you don't have paypal, and I'm sure you could get someone to send you some brass for a small fee.)

EDIT:

3. You could make a Crayola barrel and insert that into the barrel.

Hm...aren't crayolas bigger than the actual breech? I don't think I would be able to fit one of those inside the original barrel.

I'm not sure about the size of the original barrel, but I do know that sanding the crayola down can get it much smaller. You still have to sand out the inside of the original barrel for almost any barrel replacement you will be doing.

No, without completely making a new breech, crayolas will not work. The breech needs to be sanded even to accept 17/32 brass.

And to other people, drill from the back.

I actually ended up drilling from both sides to get it out, but yeah.

Does 17/32 brass generally fit stock darts alright? If so that's probably what I'm going to have to use.

Yeah, they fit well. Just be sure to leave about a 1/2" of the orange bolt/barrel before the dart starts going into the brass. Otherwise it'll just bow out of the bolt, jam, and ruin your dart.

Yeah yeah, I figured it'd be a bad idea to barrel the whole thing. Well thanks for your help everyone, I'll try to get this unfortunate thing fixed soon.

In addition to T-Bull's advice to sink the 17/32" ring at least 1/2" deep into the bolt (in other words, the dart first goes through 1/2" of the original bolt before encountering the 17/32" brass, I'd recommend getting a model file set and beveling the leading edge slightly.
  • Take some sandpaper and glue /tape it to something approximate the right width. I used a crayola, but he used some finer sandpaper and a piece of 1/2" brass.
  • Sand away the inside of the bolt until the uncut piece of 17/32" sinks in deep enough, accounting for that 1/2" leading edge.
  • Cut the tightening ring. T-Bull used a 1/2" long tube, but I had 1" long tubes from a failed mod.
  • Make sure the ream out the end(s).
  • Using the uncut piece of tube, ram the ring down the bolt to the right depth.
  • Now take the hobby file and bevel the edge. If you do it before now, trying to insert it will likely ruin it.
