Hello everyone in the NIC,

This is an event coverage of the first Singapore Nerf Tournament 2009 event that was just held last weekend on the 29-30th August 2009. This official Nerf Tournament is organised by Hasbro.


Singapore Nerf Tournament 2009 (Location: Downtown East D'Marquee, Singapore)




Tournament Registration, 3 Categories:

8-13 yrs old = 29th Aug '09 (Day 1)
14-17 yrs old = 29th Aug '09 (Day 1)
8-55 yrs old (Open category) = 30th Aug '09 (Day 2)




Tournament Teams Test Fire Area (Before deployment to the Main Tournament Area)




Nerf Blaster Demonstration & Hands-on Area (Open to the Public)




Nerf Blaster Displays




Main Tournament Area

Team Zones, Penalty Box, Flag & Targets





Tournament Gameplay Summary:

All Tournament players are equipped with the new Nerf Furyfire, along with dart tag vests and protective eyewear. All equipment is supplied by the organiser. Each team comprises of 4 players.

The Tournament runs on a Capture-The-Flag style gameplay with layers of target objectives. Team points are scored by a combination of flag capture, target board hits and player hits.

Tournament players have to hit their designated mid-field target before they can enter into the opponent's area, and then hit the opposing team's zone target before being allowed to capture the flag.

Teams compete against each other to accumulate scores for podium wins and grand prizes!

Don't salivate over the raider. Its the same peice of shit that the recon was only more shots. I'm fairly unenthused to attempt wasting time modding mine.


The footage made me cry inside a little. It was just a bunch of directionless kids running amok. I love how the one girl in vid 4 is just blasting people in the back from like a foot away.
Sadly the guns being stock really make this for a sad sad event. And the feild layout is pretty pathetic as well.

I don't know... as miffed as I am at the stock guns, I do think it fixes the element of sharpshooting. I don't pretend to be any expert at NIC wars, but at the ones I have with my community, it tends to pretty much turn into people standing at opposite ends of the field taking shots at each other. With stock guns, it seems to be a lot more fun and active. Although, I concur; those playing fields are a lot weaker then I thought they'd be.

Let's remember that not everyone comes out swinging with flanking maneuvers and tactics. I agree that the cover is sparse compared with what the US NDTL event had, but I think that the stock blasters made dodging that much more possible. As for the standoffs, I can't say that's been a problem at the NIC wars I've been to and one instance it could have happened where both players agreed to a draw (ask Merzlin and Ryan Mcnumbers about that).

Personally, I had a bang up time playing with stock blasters at the NDTL US. It was a nice return to the roots up close and personal after a few NIC wars where the ranges are way higher. If you ask me, I think swords should have been allowed, hehe.

I know its about having fun. And that's great but I just expected it being the "INTERNATIONAL DART TAG LEAGUE" there would be some what coordinated teams of kids playing and showing some kind of, I don't know.. organization. This seemed more like a random "hey kids here are blasters go have fun". Some of them seemed like they had never held a blaster in their lives.


I think I'm also just spiteful that I'm too old to enter.

Well, the tournament layout and gameplay was designed to cater to players of all ages and skill levels. All the way from young kids to teens to adults.

Imho, this event really helped to showcase to the local public how Nerf can be played as a team sport in a safe and fun environment, and the core emphasis was to have FUN!

I guess the symmetrical tournament layout was kept open with limited cover so that there are less choke points or blind spots. Players have the freedom of fast movement with plenty of opportunities to engage each other up close to score as much points as possible within the time limits per round.

The use of stock Furyfires was quite suitable for a tournament area of that size. With stock ranges, players have to advance forward to tag opponents (instead of just camping at opposite ends of the area taking pot shots at each other), so it makes for a much faster paced gameplay with active contact between players.

Hardcore seasoned nerfers more used to relying on modded blasters and lots of cover in Nerf wars may cringe at the prospect of using stock blasters in an open tournament area, but to many players who participated in this tournament, it was a return to the classic Nerf game. Everyone has the same equipment and play on the same level, so teams compete based on skill and teamwork.

Although many of the teams were competitive, there were also teams which participated mainly to have a fun game amongst friends. The tournament atmosphere was friendly and encouraging. Many spectators i spoke to enjoyed watching the tournament and this event sparked even more positive interest in the Nerf hobby.

In the Day 2 Open Category when adults were allowed to participate, it was interesting to see those competitive teams displaying different strategies and keen coordination. It was also very heartening to see teams with parents and their young kids participating and having lots of fun.

I only took short game footage excerpts of a few teams, there were ALOT more teams that participated and it would have taken many hours of footage to video them all. I noticed there were official event videographers on site, so maybe we might see professionally edited official tournament game footage featured in Nerf promo videos soon.

Anyways, it was a great event for both new and seasoned Nerfers. Hopefully more such official tournament events would be organised in more countries soon!

I LOL-ed. Well, no actually I tried to stifle my laughter and got spit all over my monitor. But it's all good. Sorta.

It's good to see Nerf finally getting to Asia, though. Maybe in half a decade or so they'll get to Malaysia. But then, maybe not.

SG, I'm a little unclear how if at all Singapore stands next to Malaysia. Is it considered separate? I see it a ways south on the map. Either way, I think a decade is a bit of an underestimate.


Also, did you play in the tourney? What did the winners end up getting? Any words with the event staff?

Yup, both countries are seperate.

I guess official Nerf events are organised by the individual Hasbro country offices, so if Nerf gets popular in a country, there is always a chance of events being held there too.

My team didn't get a chance to play in the tourney, we couldn't register in time, all the team registration slots were fully booked quite early, so i decided to just support the teams and do the event coverage. The winners got cash prizes, nerf blaster hampers and tournament medals.

I did have the opportunity to speak to the event staff and hasbro reps too... nice chaps to chat with.
