August 22nd was witness to a day of Showdowns. In Chicago. Hence, CHICAGO SHOWDOWN hath come! Seriously, some familiar faces and some new ones showed to once again take shots and kick ass in Oak Lawn, IL. Already, I knew the day was off to a good start when I was in the parking lot unloading my gear. I had my BBBB (featured in "Blaster of the Moment" slung over my shoulder, when a police car rode up. The officer inside was cool guy, and simply asked "So where are you paintballing?"

I showed him my blaster. "Foam! Nerf, definitely not painball, sir." He only wanted to know what was going on, and he went on his way. A sigh of relief later, I made my way to the field. I had already dropped off barricades and obstacles, so what was left was getting locked and loaded.

It was most of the usual suspects from the Nerf Internet Community but there were a whole bunch of fresh faces, too. Not to take anything away from any of them these kids brought their game. It's made me start to think though about ways to get people to be better informed about events so they know what to expect. In any event, the games of the day were Team Deathmatch, Team CTF, Defend the Core (IN A PLAYGROUND, terrain = ftw), and even a bit of Team Powerball. Team Powerball was new to me, but it essentially followed in the spirit of Powerball from American Gladiators, only with nerf blasters.

Defend the Core took place on a playground, which was a lot of fun to watch. I videotaped and the footage will follow, but I'm a big fan of terrain that changes levels. High ground, cover, it's all a factor and it was just cool to see. Eventually though a lot of younger kids with their parents came by so a good half hour later we were done and had to relocated back to the field.

Our events now have street cred too! A cop actually came by to watch. It was in fact, the same officer from earlier. He was just interested and according to some of the other nerfer parents there, said we could be doing worse things. Hear, hear.

Probably the coolest thing I can think of was the new people from NHQ and the people who just jumped in with us near the end of the day. This is what I dig, playing a pickup game of sorts, and drawing people in to play. I think we all had a decent time, even though there was an imbalance of modded vs. stock blasters. But running and gunning all day with random strangers brought together to have fun? I dig it. Big props to the Des Plaines kids and those new kids we played against for jumping in with us.

Now for the PSA portion of our presentation:

1) If you're going to test fire a blaster, by all rights MAKE SURE THE AREA YOU ARE FIRING INTO IS CLEAR. This avoids shooting someone in the face when they're not expecting it. It's one thing to pop someone in the heat of battle, it's another when you're standing around talking and get whapped out of nowhere.

2) Shooting someone from behind when they're clearly not paying attention to anything and watching the flag go is considered UNSPORTING. Especially when it's from 10' away with a modded 2k.

3) This goes without saying, but definitely take care of taking shots in a playground. On at least one occasion a parent came over a little concerned their kid was going to get pegged. We're good about taking our shots, but all it takes is one accident.

4) I hate to say it, but if you're playing out in the open you're going to lose ammo. That's why a lot of the NIC makes their own darts, it's cheaper that way in the long run than buying even BuzzBee stock ammo. Not to mention even removing an AR means you can load other ammo down the barrel of your blaster and it makes an easier time of reloading.

Well, that was... interesting. Some highlights of the day.

pro:
-No guns of mine broke durring the war.
-As usual, I meet some new people.
-my guns worked well.
-The park was awesome.
-Defend the core was hilarious (3 cobras shotgun loaded).
-Kane
-Using a couple of Kane's simple yet effective home-mades

con:
-Alot of other people's guns broke.
-People coming late (one of which was me).
-Losing half of my darts.
-Merzlin's st9k and Brian's plus bow from five feet away.
-Ryan's plus bow (only bad if you're not on his team).

Great war, looking forward to another. Well, that's enough for now (my fingers are starting to hurt from this cell-post). I need a higher powered primary, haha.

Thanks
Finn

How do I begin....

Posted Image

I have to say, it was a different war, but awesome. The new terrain was a nice change from a completely open field with little trees to none. Snake, you hosted a great war. Thanks for getting out there and making this happen.
  • Over preparring dart wise. I made over 400 darts, and used them plentifully, and I still had too many. I was counting on supplying caffeine with some, but it seems he came, and I left. If you can/are reading this caffeine, I forgot to give you that bad of 'Screamers.
  • Speedloaders own. When it comes down to the +bow, simple is best.
  • None of my guns breaking at the war. Now, after the war....
  • Adreniline pumping through me the entire day, and not feeling any of the pain from my little "Slip"
  • Ryan taking my +bow into his own care. Thanks ryan, now I know that taking apart a broken +bow during the second round of a game is not the wisest decision. Yes, I was stupid to do so; but thanks for taking it and fixing it. I can't thank you enough
  • Snake supplying me with an RSCB. That thing rocks! Thanks Brian!
  • Caffeine showing up. Man, did I underestimate this guy.
  • Getting a completely stock Blastfire for a great price.
  • Getting multiple kills in the day, but I'm sure I died more than I lived
  • Lasting a round with Ryan long enough to be called quits.
  • Getting a new commission with Ryan..Beware...
  • My ST9K falling like a champ, then only appeared to have one little scrape and breech tighten up a tad.
  • Using Snake's +bow while mine solemly stayed in the grass. Thanks snake
  • D.T.C
  • Team powerball, WOW is that a great game.
  • Coming back with nearly 75% of what I came with. Thats awesome!
  • Seeing some new guys, Kane escesically. All I can say is woah- take it negatively or postivly at your own risk.
  • Some NHQ guys showed up, which is some new blood. I'm glad someone is participating over there
  • New terrain providing some new trees and coverage
  • Some of my darts were blood soaked when I did a dart inventory. Holy shit these things are crazy awesome!
  • Getting to see the drum mag in action- It seemed like he never ran out of ammo
  • Getting some spacer plates for my '1500. Thanks Ryan!
  • Only showing up 20 min. late, and appearing to bbe right on time.

Bad things:
  • Taking a Dive into hard pavement. Holy shit did that hurt. Those who saw the spill should know that I now have a sprained wrist, and I can barely walk the day after. Heh, it was well earned.
  • Taking apart my +Bow in the grass. What the fuck was I thinking? Screws everywhere, washers, bolts, and nuts lieing in the grass, I don't know what the hell I was doing. Thanks Ryan for taking it home, shit was I retarded.
  • Caffeine coming in the last round I was able to attend.
  • I heard that the LB wasn't quite NIB, and I'd like to say sorry to caffeine, whom now owns the gun and was quite misinformed. When/If you read this, I'm sorry about that. I didn't even realize that there was cheap-o, dollar tree scotch tape on the side.
  • Leaving early, if you can say that.
I don't know if you guys remember this quote, but it sure means a hell of a lot seeing as the reputation it has

If Merz isn't bleeding, we aren't having a good time

If that isn't correct, please correct me, heh.

Snake, so I heard you're hosting CS3....

Oh my...I can imagine telling the cop that I'm an off duty officer...and that I'm practicing my criminal apprehension skills.

Awesome war. I'm glad to see we got a decent turnout of 14 people or so. It was good to see all the new blood out there Saturday. It makes me hope Chicago Nerf is growing more and more.

Highlights
-Brian putting on an awesome war. Thanks for everything!
-Wingman round when Merz and I called it quits. It would have lasted forever.
-Me being on the winning team every round. No joke.
-Nerfing with Brian #2. Sorry about that brutal headshot.
-Weather was very nice
-Tommy enjoying the new +bow
-Merzlin's 9k was cool
-Finn showing up from Michigan, thanks for making you way out here
-Meeting Kane and shooting him repeatedly
-Caffeine showing up, even if it was the last four rounds
-All my blasters working perfectly
-Plenty of darts for the whole day, even though I lost a ton.
-Defend the core was awesome on the playground
-Cobra=ultimate DTC weapon. Brian and I scored three Cobra shots in the core
-Using a Manta Ray the first time and actually blocking quite a few shots
-Having the HQ guys show up and they knew who I was
-Street cred from the Oak Lawn police
-Nerfing way past the end of the war
-Maximizer shirt=win
-Not taking any painful shots, even though I did get stung by a bee

All in all, it was a great day. Let's do this again, say sometime in September. All of you who attended Saturday, I expect to make it to the battlefield the 17th in October for Chano 3.

I would have thought you would be used to that by now... people need to learn that they need to hire a long legged gangly creature to run you down with a magstrike... like I do :P

Way to go Brian, you pissed off Talio.

But yea, he's right anyway.

Well Kane tried doing it a few times. Never got too close though. One time he caught me reloading but my gazelle-like abilities got me out of the situation.

Duly noted.

Yeah, the closest I managed to get to Ryan was zig-zagging like a fiend at one point, but by then the rest of his team started closing in. Sadly, my TTG and pistol splat were not the intimidating display of firepower I had hoped.

I ran a ton of people down with my magstrike, but I was always on Ryan's team. I think I got more kills than deaths, especially in the CTF rounds, but my friends got destroyed. Well, they told their friends, and I now have about 6 new nerfers who might come to chicago area wars.

Are you going to be at chano 3? if so, I look forward to playing with you.

Wow that is quite spectacular. Who were you at the war? 6 new nerfers is awesome.

Brian, what's with the pictures? I want to see those stills of Merzlin's and I standing off.

Bobbo, were you the tall kid with the glasses? That was your 12 year old friend, and the other kid who Brian (Snake) was calling Short-Round all day, right? Glad you guys had a good time!

Ryan, you may not have realized it but you were JUST in frame of the core-cam. Yes, Jobar and all. I'll see what I can do to finagle the footage a bit better.

Yeah I was the tall kid with the glasses that came late. My friend was Short Round and my brother was the little blonde kid. Short Round told all his friends and they were overjoyed because they have 3 recons and 2 mavericks :). I only have enough guns for 5 people tops, so if they all came to a war they would need to use borrowed guns, and they don't know how to use most of them. I will try to go to wars, but we're all in a pretty intense marching band program, and every Saturday till like November is filled. Otherwise, I think we can make most Sunday wars.
