When did they start making the black cover on the back shorter. The last recon I bought was about a year ago and I don't remember reading about any changes to the recon. And yes I did search. If it was talked about and I missed it could you point me in the right direction and sorry for the post.

I believe the longer cap is the replacement for the versions that have the armed rod. It stuck out much further than the current version. The plungers are the same internal length, however. Both of them have a slight amount of sealed off deadspace in the back of them.

I don't believe they are the same length - I seem to remember seeing pictures of the 'ARMED' plunger being an inch or so longer than current generation Recons. I'll see if I can find pictures.

I think it's simply another of Hasbro's subtle ways to slowly decrease the power of each generation of gun, as they all seem to be getting weaker with each generation.


Also notice how the plunger comes so far back in the first gen that it almost touches the middle piece in the stock. The end of the bolt only goes to the 'M' in ARMED, too, whilst in the newer plungers, (the shorter ones without 'ARMED') it fills the whole plunger.

CrazyIvan is right. The actual plunger tubes are the same length. The extra inch or two you see on the longer one isn't really part of the plunger tube, it's just extra plastic. You could cut it off and it probably wouldn't affect the gun at all.

Yep.

If you take out the screw in the very back of the "armed" tube, you can pry out a cap in the back, and this is what you see:

The back portion is just extra plastic that was removed in later versions. It's just about an inch and a half of empty space.

If you have the long black tube and a newer recon, you can put a NF spring in between the old cap and the new plunger.....

I can attest to that. I did so with my recon, and it's quite effective. It's like having a powerstock but with the easy handling of a pistol.
