Break the paint, use whatever paint solvent is applicable, or (preferred) throw them out and get some decent blasters. I suggest looking through the nerf wiki for blasters that you might like, each has a review about its functionality.

*ahem*

As for your real problem, just use some man-force and pry it apart. You'll probably wreck the paint, but unless you're twisting a foot away from the joint, there shouldn't be enough shear stress to break anything.

Tisk, tisk, always give your paint at least 24 hours to dry, most paints take almost a week to fully cure. What your real problem here is, that if you could put the extension on with out letting the paint dry, you must have not taken it apart to paint it. This is one of the worst possible things you can do to a Nerf gun. Next time you paint a gun take a look at my tutorial, or one of the many other great painting guides out there. If you want a good looking, even, and long lasting paint job there a many steps that must be properly followed to get good results.
If you are interested in fixing the finished look of the front of your gun, make sure to sand off ALL of the paint underneath. It may be beneficial to sand it down a bit farther as well. The will help with the wear of using the barrel extensions, as well as help with your sticking problem.

If you have any questions feel free to drop me a PM and I'll see if I can help.

The little critters of nature, they don't know that they're ugly. That's very funny, a fly marrying a bumble bee. I told you I'd shoot, but you didn't believe me. Why didn't you believe me?
