Documenting nerf wars has always been a fantastic idea, but it's usually a massive hassle to designate someone to walk around with a camcorder; the individual is always forced to stay at a distance, and stay out of combat, they're usually just wandering semi-aimlessly. bpso86 had plans to construct a mounting bracket for his digital camcorder and +Bow, but why risk such an expensive piece of equipment? Coupled with the significant weight would make the blaster unwieldy. With more than a bit of help from a few of the nerfers in the IRC chat* I found a fantastic solution.

The model acquired accepts up to 4GB SD cards (shown above). The Audio quality is less than perfect, when it's mounted to my at3k, it picks up basically whatever I say, and little else. When it's inside the LS scope, all audio is basically irrelevant. The Video quality seems quite acceptable, and once I finish editing the 10+ hours of video I recorded during Valhalla, you'll all get an opportunity to see the video quality for yourselves. The camera weighs about 1/2 a pound (with batteries) and did not negatively effect my ability to wield the blaster to which it was attached.

More pictures of the product:

I've installed the rear lens from the LS into the front so as to protect the camera lens in the highly unlikely event that a stefan with exposed BB were to strike the camera head on.

The hatch allows me to easily operate the device without the need to disassemble the scope. The buttons and operating screen (The camera does not possess a viewfinder) are quite durable. The hatch actually does more to try and make the apparatus look stock than anything else.

The rear lens is absent, and after cutting down the back end of the scope, allows me to exchange SD cards between a round without having to disassemble the device, which is fantastic.

I've quite a bit of video acquired while the Action Cam was mounted to my at3k, and when it was inside the LS scope (which creates a rather amusing image, of rounded corners, reminiscent of the opening to a James Bond movie.

For those interested; here is the model I acquired.

http://www2.oregonsc...scid=14&pid=895

They have a few different models and bundled packs, for what that's worth.

It comes with multiple mounting implements, so one can easily mount the blaster to a helmet, use the Velcro straps, mounting bracket for a bicycle, rubber strap, the tri-pod (the model I have apparently will also function as a web-cam) or even create their own mounting implement.

If you are curious as to just how durable the device is, I suggest this video (located by Aimless)

Yes, I know the camera only weighs like 1/2 a pound, so its terminal velocity isn't going to be incredibly high, and it's landing on grass... but I'd be impressed to learn that most digital camcorder could take a fall from almost 2000 feet and not even flinch. I feel confident it can take a hit from a stefan and it would be fine.

I have acquired 3 4GB SD cards, allowing me to record roughly 6 hours of video at the highest frames/second and resolution. Switching cards every couple hours allows me to record effectively the entire war, though I admit that at least 1/3 of the video I recorded is of the clear blue sky...and not because I was looking for birds.

P.S.

On the related topic of "Tools for Nerf Wars," and because it's definitly not worthy of its own thread, I'll post this instrument here:

Quite useful for organizing vast quantities of nerfers at a war; it's like herding cats whenever there are 60+ nerfers at a war.

That's really, really neat. I was recently thinking about how filmers would have to not be playing and how boring that would be. A really cool solution. I don't think I'd be able to fork over the money right now, but that is cool.

Nice job. Also very good idea for the mega phone and even though it doesn't mean much MAD PROPS.

I wish that wasn't so expensive. But at least I have something to save up for. I have been thinking constantly the best way to film myself at a nerf war without having someone follow me, and this is the perfect solution.

And the durability of this camera is fascinating.

I like the concept, but with gun mounting you have to be careful about not pointing your gun down. I have that problem, I have tripod mounts on my guns.

I think mine's an older, larger version of this one. I was just going to use the stock strap and velcro to mount it to the front of my LS or even strap it to my head for an "over the shoulder" feel, but this is good too.

Very clever idea. It should now be pretty simple to shoot footage in a first person perspective. Its kind of like how cops have cameras in their cars.

He could just flip the camera lens to him, for extreme closeup/reaction shots.

That is really cool. Looks like I have another gadget to buy this summer.

I can see the LARPers grabbing these en masse to film their little battles.

Great job Twitch; I like the idea. I also have the same camera. I recently bought it just to try it out. Unfortunately, after testing it, I found that it must be extremely bright outside for it to work.

I used it at your war, Xtremejumpy, if you remember, however, the straps it came with work well enough for me.

Now you can have it from a players point view. Very clean, looks like normal scope from afar.

Ryan- Could you weigh the balls for extra oomph? Maybe cut one ball open (like a slit) and spread it so you could get some weights in there?

They have another cam that's 30 dollars cheaper and pretty much the same as far as I can tell, except it has a 2 GB card size limit, instead of 4 GB. If you're on a budget, you can buy 2 GB cards in bulk and it'd end up cheaper in the end.

I want to see videos of just direct hits strung together in rapid succession. The FPS view would make it pretty BA.

The Difference:
-Guns shoot bullets that kill people
-Blasters shoot darts that tag people

I do not play with guns.

Yes that would be great just every shot he got in Valhalla in an 5min. film. Organize them with some hilarious crotch shot at the end.

Haha. Nice, man. I think if you rushed somebody, the footage would be really shaky, and even running would probably cause a similar problem. But nonetheless, I second SchizoMC, definitely need to make one of these this summer.
EDIT: Dammit, I just wasted my 350th post. I was saving it for something special...

That's pretty awesome, only there will be an issue when you're running with the gun, because you can't run with the camera pointing at the action of the battle at all times, so a bunch of footage will be the camera bouncing back and forth. That's the one problem I've seen with these kind of mods.

Edit: Salmon, beat me to the whole shaking gun thing. Oh well.

It would probaly give the video a good cloverfield feel.
And I'm sure you will get a ton of tour feet running. But that would just add to the Effeminateness.

A potential issue is that some players may use different blasters for extended amounts of time, along with what's been mentioned with shaky footage and the like. Perhaps creating some kind of helmet or other headwear and attaching this would work better, which would also give a more genuine first person view.

Also, sside from the obviously entertaining aspect of first person combat footage, getting several of these cameras around both teams will allow each one to get a fresh perspective on how the other fights. Good stuff.

You can buy action cam's for around $40 on eBay.
