Recently there has been a great increase of new members, with the overwhelming majority of them being idiots. CS and other Admins have posted many times today giving COC links to many people, and in most cases warning them. I think that if a short ban of a week at most was given to these new members on their first offense, most of them wouldn't even come back when their ban was over, and the ones who actually want to participate would learn from their mistakes. And then if they do come back from their short ban and continue to fail, then they can get a longer ban. I don't mean for this to be a lot of work for the admins either, but if you are already keeping track of how many warnings a user has, I don't see how this can be harder.

I think when you are registering your account the admins should have the COC stay up on your screen for a period of about 2 to 3 minutes so you have nothing better to do but read it.

CaptainSlug has actually been doing this lately. If you read around, he's been giving a lot of the new members shorter bans, because some of them actually might be worthy members who just don't know the unspoken rules of NH.

I don't remember the Administrative staff ever really caring about the opinions of the community when it comes to enforcement of the CoC.

See this thread as an example: http://nerfhaven.com...showtopic=15387

We do what we need to in order to keep this forum functional for the purpose of being a useful yet growing resource of modifications, homemades, and Nerf Wars.

I briefly suspend people who are the source of multiple infractions in a short period of time (i.e. post whores) and who obviously aren't reading the replies that contain warnings.
I've also been handing out 30-day suspensions for people who are caught having registered multiple accounts because doing that makes the process of manually validating new members even more time consuming. If I simply deleted those accounts the offenders would simply register another account without knowing that they're pissing us off and wasting our time.

9,999 day specials are for people that despite warnings show absolutely no improvement.

I haven't noticed, I didn't even know contributors had the power to close topics until today. Is there a way to see if someone's banned?

Edit: CptainSlug, I understand this isn't a democracy.

I'm a pseudoAdmin for the time being because so many of them are busy right now and we had been REALLY far behind on validations.

Although a new member as well, I wholeheartedly agree with the admins' position on new members. Let me tell you story of a forum I went to once: This forums main focus was on LEGO, however The lead admin focused a lot of attention on his writing and writing in general. Eventually he gave his brother and sister admin abilities(the sister issues are another story for another time). There was a warns system set up. ten strikes your out one warn removed after 3 months of not receiving one. We had a problem with members getting warned, mind you warns were just verbal warnings basically, waiting until three months were up and the n trolling the forum getting warned a few times then waiting for those warns to clear and repeating. This would become extremely annoying over time and I eventually chose to leave due to the admin's lack of testicles(More on this in the other story). I'd like to think I was a decent contributing member of that forum and I left because I was sick of dealing with noobs and trolls. Now Imagine what NH would be If say FA_24 left. Sure there's the chance you just banned the next Captain Slug in terms of homemades, but you may have banned the nerf Hitler as well.
That's all I have to say about that /Forest Gump
Sorry for the rant but hat's how I feel on the issue.

Sure there's the chance you just banned the next Captain Slug in terms of homemades.

There's no chance of that frankly, since neither of us were terrible posters in the beginning.
In my various experiences as an Admin of different forums the members that start as terrible posters and don't improve when warned will always stay terrible posters. You can polish a turd, but it's still a turd and smells just as badly as it did before it was polished.

Members that improve their behavior when warned are welcome here.
But members that never need to be warned are much preferred.

Most people probably think that the CoC will be long, extensive, and pointless. I thought so too at first, but I decided to look at it anyways. It was so short I read the entire thing and HOLY SHIT I have broken one rule once on accident but other than that, I'm clean.

I'd call Godwin's Law into effect, but it's completely unnecessary. What CaptainSlug has sucessfully done is differentiated between are the "n00bs" and the "newbs". "Newbs" can be annoying and clueless at first, but in the end will eventually pick up on the rules and etiquette of the forum. "N00bs" however are a whole different story, no matter how many times you tell them that they are doing something wrong, they will willfully and blatantly disregard all rules of conduct and ettiquite. "N00bs" wreck the quality of whatever they touch and are usually have to be banned before they lower the quality of the forum.

We're not discouraging people from joining a Nerf forum, we're discouraging them from joining this forum. It's an important distinction because, frankly, we don't give a shit. The Haven was created to escape the idiotic masses, now they're all here. -cxwq

CaptainSlug has been very diligent over the past day or so, and every time I see him warn or ban someone it's for an understandable and/or obvious reason that deserves whatever CS said/did.

Now practically all the admins are very good about this and aren't unfair or unjust when it comes to these matters. Every time I've seen someone get banned it was never for a bad reason; I always agreed with the admin. It's not like these guys are mindless drones who don't understand humans and ban at the slightest indifference to the CoC (well, maybe VACC... just kidding :P). People are given many warning by both admins and fellow members as well. Some choose to blatantly disregard this advice. Well, their loss; you can't feel sorry for them.

I'm curious, when a warning is given do you (admins) send a PM to them explaining the situation?

It could cut down on those who ignore/disregard the warning post.

I have to agree with most of the people in this thread, Cap. Slug and the other admins have been very good about warning those who disregard or don't pay enough attention to the COC. The current system works but with the massive flood of Newbies this system becomes hard to maintain. Delegating power makes a group of people whom the admins have to maintain more so than the Newbs. In my opinion one of three things will happen. One, nothing will happen and life will continue. Two, the admins will come up with something new. Or three, this thread will be locked when the admins get sick of us trying to do their jobs.

From what I believe, not only is NH not a democracy, it's not even intended to be a community. It's meant to be a resource for nerfers and only a resource. The place to come for information on mods, homemades, and to find or organize wars. The forum-related aspects were never supposed to have any significance - post whores, post counts, bans, flames, n00bs, admins, CoC, all of it shouldn't be the focus of the Haven.

Now obviously bad posters can be distracting, but quit complaining and just focus them out. Only see what you want to see and train your eye to ignore the bull. That includes members. Don't even interact with someone unless they have established at least some kind of good reputation. Make them earn their posts and their audiences. Normally this kind of impersonal filtering of people is not something I would recommend, but NH is huge and calls for a different style.

Personally, I would not even recommend these kind of topics. Let the admins do their jobs and as members, we should do ours. NH runs smoother when the members post/read mods, homemades, and organize/find wars while the admins run the forum and maintain order. Interaction with the admins in real life is fine, but just let them do their thing here in peace, they already have enough on their plate.

When I first joined, topics were not even closed. Members were expected to know when to stop. Those were the good old days.
