I am preparing an informational speech for my college speech class and the topic I have is cell phones. If you have a moment, please help me out.

I am looking for the age at which you got your first cell phone.

The average age in the UK is 8 years old, but finding the average age in the US is tougher to find.
If anyone has any helpful links, I would also appreciate the help.

Thanks a lot!

I bought my first cell through Airtouch in 1998, and it was on their original Analog network. It got really crappy coverage at the coast. My second was a Qualcomm through Sprint, which I really liked.

Just a suggestion to help your poll:

Not to discriminate, but a lot of the older guys on this site are obviously going to have gotten their cell phone when they were 19+, because that's how old the were when cell phones came out. It seems to me you're trying to find how young people get cell phones at young ages. You might want to consider an age cap.

Right. The sentence I'm going to use is, "Kids are getting their first cell phones at the age of ___"
I need this to find a target age. So yeah, it excludes the older crowd, but if they fall into the 19+ category, it's not relevant to my claim that the age is dropping.

I suppose for us older folks, we could think of it as "When will you allow your child to have a cell phone?".

I plan on having a limited functionality cell in the hands of my son by ten. No data, no camera, only able to call specific numbers.

I absolutely hate talking on the phone. I only bought one because the payphones on the college campus started disappearing.

The little critters of nature, they don't know that they're ugly. That's very funny, a fly marrying a bumble bee. I told you I'd shoot, but you didn't believe me. Why didn't you believe me?

Same here, along with the fact that when I moved out of the dorms I no longer had free telephone service. I got my first cell phone when I was 19, and I had absolutely no use for it before then. Nowadays, it seems that kids can't live without them... constant texting, updating social websites, etc...

I only have one because payphones are going the way of the dinosaur.

I only use mine as a safety measure when i go somewhere. Other than that, I hardly use it. I personally think texting is stupid. More expensive than calling, you're grammar and spelling begins to suck, and you need to type in those small keypads fast. There's nothing you can't just call them for.
