Something we've heard a lot of in recent days, and something that has always plagued the Nerf community is its comparison to paintball. I constantly get the argument the paintball is better, or more accurately "Why don't you just play Paintball", when either recruiting or simply discussing Nerf. People use paintball as an excuse for quitting or just a reason not to try nerf at all. The problem with this line of reasoning is that they are not the same, and or interchangeable.

Personally, I am a big airsoft fan, and many of those I nerf with regularly play paintball. They serve different purposes. If I want to war in the woods, or during winter, I am going to choose Airsoft. This does not mean that come summer I won't be nerfing. Sure airsoft/paintball is more realistic with longer range, and is more capable of varied terrain. However, for every benefit you can think of for paintball there is a perfectly good reason to nerf. Primarily, nerf is a hell of a lot cheaper. Nerf also offers, in my opinion, far more room for customizability and individual style, in weaponry and combat. That is reason enough, but neither reason even touches on my favorite part of nerf. You see, in paintball the range and speed of the projectiles are far greater, creating a primarily long-range battles. You can't get into close range stand-offs. You can't get into the kind of run and gun sweat and blood face to face showdowns I love so much, and you sure as hell can't get up in your enemy's face, dodge his poorly placed shot, and slam him from 5 feet as he turns to run for his hit points. Nerf has the capacity to be faster and meaner. I love the realistic combat of airsoft/paintball, but it will never replace nerf for me.

Nerf-On or Fuck-off.

Being still quite "young" (15) I think another advantage is that for nerfing, not only will my parents still be OK with it. Also, you won't get in trouble shooting "foam darts." I mean, how ominous does that sound? I never thought about the close combat thing though. Cool!

Let me start by saying that I am now paintballing much more than I am Nerfing. Yes, it has larger crowds, yes, more people I know do it.

Next, the whole range thing...you would be suprised. A normal paintball gun has trouble getting over 150ft (Flatline excluded...damn, that's a nice thing). I was expecting a lot more the first time I played. Nerf is much closer, more personal. You get to move around a good deal moreso than in paintball...I rarely bunker in Nerf.

Next, the whole "customization" thing. I am seriously looking into doing some light airsmithing (essentially, modding/repairing/customizing paintball markers). Take a look here. Doc has inspired me in many ways...mostly through the whole "Mountain Dew" thing. :P

Nonetheless, I find it just as adaptable as Nerf, just in a different way...it takes more time and money (in most cases). I can't fix someones regulator with a trip to Lowe's (usually).

But, Nerf will always be my favorite. No matter how much of my money I put into paintball, Nerf is better. I can't shoot from 10' away in PB...now in Nerf, that's cool. Getting into "The Matrix" style dodging, is cool. Messing around with a bunch of friends, shooting each other, period, is cool. Sending me free stuff, again, is cool.

Dang...I've never been in an actual Nerf war before and it seems so cool now...I was just having fun tinkering with them and shooting em against my walls. Must...Nerf....now....

I noticed that it has been the other way around for me lately, but that's because it is harder for me to afford paintballing right now. It gets really expensive over time.

That's one major thing that I love about Nerfing is that its WAY cheaper than paintball. Also, you don't need to wear those full faced, sweaty masks. Cxwq, wasn't there an article posted on Nerf Online explaining the reasons why Nerf is better than paintball? I remember reading something like that over there a while back.

You see the Nerf/Paintball comparisions all over the net. We've even got one at NHQ...kinda.

Yeah, playing paintball often is equal to setting fire to large amounts of cash. It's a lot like a girlfriend, or maybe eating at a fancy seafood place each night.

Point is, if spending like $80 on paint alone each month is bad, you've got alot more to go through...trust me, if any of you guys are considering paintball, be ready to get pulled into a dark, deep (but very fun) hole.

Quite right. Have you also noticed they are both by Vacc? That too, interesting. Several articles on NH are also, almost identicle (sp?) to the ones on NO.

Also, you won't get in trouble shooting "foam darts." I mean, how ominous does that sound?

Actually, you can get in trouble for "War". The consequences are similar to "Assault". The only reason I know this is because I was at a friend's house and someone called the cops on us for shooting at each other. All that the police said was that we shouldn't be doing that with things that can inflict welts or long-term wounds. He also said that it was considered "War" and that we should not shoot at each other. He let us off with a warning because of my friend's dad's defense, that and the neighbors described the guns as pellet rifles. That may have been because of what happened earlier, but that is not relevent. We were shooting at a target with a .22 pellet rifle. This also was in a strictly ruled township so that may have played a part, so now we Nerf near my house, which is out of that township by 450 feet. My neighbors could care less, as long as we don't hurt their kids.

What I've actually been trying out lately is airsoft, which seems relatively inexpensive so far. I bought a $20 pistol (marked down from $30), an extra magazine, and 8000 BBs and I've been constantly playing for about... a little over a month now.

Airsoft isnt cheap. You got a crappy spring pistol. The REAL airsoft guns are in upwards of $150+. Thats stock with out batteries and charger or any other upgrades. Some guns go for $1000+.

I agree with what cxwq is saying. They are not interchangable and all have their advantages and disadvantages.

This is the same article Vacc posted on NO several years ago. Since NO is dead, he re-posted it here. Likewise for my MOD 401 article which was originally written for NO. Expect to see Spoon's old articles for NO turn up here sooner or later.

When Hal 're-launched' NO with the new look a few months ago, I asked him (nicely) to remove my article. Since he hasn't bothered even replying to the email I'm guessing the answer is no.

Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy for doing his admin crap for however long I was there.

Dudes, NinjZ is right. All of you here, with some exceptions, think wrong. Everybody is buying sprigers and thats all. Or you are buying from CYMA, Well, or Cybergun. Almost no springer is worth it. A gas gun is about $150 for a good one. But an AEG is $270 and up, and don't argue. With everything you will need and will want for a good war, (Mags, ect, ) it will run to about $300 to $400. And one thing, there is plenty ways to customize your gun. There are metal kits, conversion kits, ect. Thats all.

Sorry, but on that cybergun comment, they are actually great guns...well, some are at least. I just bought a new uzi AEG from them for 289.90 from pyramidairsoft.com,and its way better than my marui mp5k. I've probably got about 2,000 worth of airsoft if you combine everything (batteries, mags, guns, bbs, chargers, etc), and it's very rewarding. I can honestly say if cybergun ever made more AEG's i would probably buy more of them. They hired marushin to make the guns and i am very pleased. The problem is only they only make one more AEG, and thats an M4 or M16...can't remember, and i can't stand M16/M4 looks. Anyways, just wanted to make it clear that cybergun is finally cranking out some real good airsoft guns now. And i know that this article is old, i just wanted to clarify that cybergun has better quality than they are given credit for.

No there are no sorries, you get a strike for posting after the thread was deemed dead. You need to learn how things are done around here boy. A scoulding from an admin means you don't comment.

Personally, I don't play Nerf outside. Instead, I play it insides, for the obvious reason that Paintball just can't work in a house. It's a great alternative, especially if you have the right house, you can make forts and such. Fun thing to do when a friends over. But I do enjoy Paintball more than Nerf, even with the crazily modded Nerf guns.

It's generally not a good idea to post in an old thread unless you have something vitally important to add to it. When wondering weather or not it's worth it, ask yourself if it would be worth it to start a new thread to say what you want to say. If the answer is no, then you probably shouldn't post in an old thread either. Usually a thread is old if no one else has posted in it for more than two or three weeks.

I'm a frequent paintballer, and I picked Nerf up as a nice alternative that I can play in my house and with my friends that have VERY protective mothers. Paintball is a very expensive sport, and you need 2 days to devote to it. One day to play and then rest, and the second day to take apart your gun, clean it out, and everything so it doesn't crap out. I can't do that every weekend. But let's face it, paintball is more popular*, but it's not better, just different.
*Have you seen any Nerf magazines? No. Have you seen aftermarket upgrades for Nerf guns? No. Is Nerf on TV? (I wish) No. Don't flame me, it's true.
Edit: Ooopps, give me a strike.

IT doesn't matter if nerf doesnt have a magazine, or if its on TV. I airsoft and nerf, but my dad doesn't like the idea if shooting each other with an airsoft gun. So I nerf outside with my modified nerf guns, and my sm750 will outrage both my desert eagle, and m16. Nerf is just fun, its cheap and fun to modify.

as u said there is a big war between paint ball and nerf, i use to love the rush of adrenaline i liked from paint ball and the long range of fighting, however i only get to play it 2 or 3 times a year when with nerf i can do it 10 20 times a month and personalize my gun more with the same fun and rush i felt playing paintball. :P
