I posted this over at nhq, but this is really cool so i guess I'll post it here too. Some of you may remember my old clip loading bna. This is the next version of that system, which is much more reliable, and gets better ranges due to a perfect seal with the barrel. You can see how it works in the pics. Basically the rubber band pulls the 9/16" barrel over the 17/32" shell, until it hits the ridge on the shell, which then pushes the shell back against the o-ring. A clip is coming soon, as soon as I can get out and buy the rest of the materials. This setup will allow me to use a telescoping brass barrel, but still have blazingly fast reload times, and not lose any power because of the bad seal sometimes created by clip systems. The gun gets ranges of over 100ft easily, and it's super powerful.

It looks just how I imagined it, good work. Since I already know how this thing works, Im gonna ask again what's the clip made out of? Sheet metal would be nice, because wood and cardboard is too breakable.

I'll prolly just play around with differnt clip materials until I find what's best. Wood, cardboard, and sheet metal are the main possibilities like you said, maybe cardboard wrapped in a few layers of duct tape to make it stronger, since I've had success with those types of clips in the past.

Balsa Wood, man. If people use it in space shuttles*, you can use it for a clip*.

*I'm assuming.

Basswood.

Very strong, extremely tight grain, and easy to work with. You can get a 1/8"x3"x24" sheet for a buck and a half. Should be enough wood for a decent size clip. Use Elmers wood glue to bond. Polyurethane will give you a nice protective finish.

Balsa is best for applications where strength-to-weight ratio is critical. Here weight isn't much of an issue so you can go with something a little more solid.

I know some Home Depots and Lowes' carry sheets of aircraft aluminum. If you want something sturdy that's a little thiner (although heavier) than basswood, you could probably hack-saw a pattern out of it that would fold into a clip with some persuasion.

I just went out and bought a tungsten dremel bit and some sheet metal to make a sturdy clip. The tungsten dremel bit can cut out sheetmetal paterns in a matter of seconds, it was $9. I also have a torch, flux, and sauder left over from the copper job for our bathroom, so now I can seal sheet metal. So as you can imagine, I'm pretty excited and would recomend sheet metal for your clip too. But the there is a downside, its a bit heavier than wood.

Xedice, where did you get the dremel bit? Is it a cutting wheel, or some other type of bit? If you've used it already, does it wear out quickly? I've been using a package of some kind of heavy-duty cutting wheels for my fine cuts on my aluminum projects and they wear down to nothing pretty quick. It took me a couple of them to get through the bn'a project.

I went to Lowes, and in the dremel section, they have a bunch of assorted bits in little white packages. It looks like a drill bit, but the tip of it is flat. It is basically just a long metal rod. I don't think it will wear out for a long while, its made of metal not carbon or whatever for cutting wheels.

I've also had lotsa problems with cutting wheels wearing down or shattering when I use them, so I got this diamond cutting wheel which doesn't wear out. The diamond cutting wheel isn't really diamond, it looks like a golden brake rotor.

Thank goodness for dremels.

Hmm. I may have to get one of those tungsten bits. Although I did find out just now from looking at dremel's site that I was using the large fiberglass cutting wheel at high speed when I should have been using it at low speed for aluminum.

You must have some kind of really abraisive ass then.

DIAMOND WHEEL:

Great for cutting, sawing and carving of hard materials, such as marble, concrete, brick, porcelain, ceramics, hard epoxy and soft and hard wood.

Half way down, you can see the bit I am talking about, its #9901.

"Use on hardened steel, stainless steel, cast iron, nonferrous metals, fired ceramics, plastics, hardwoods and other hard materials."

Yes, it did say cast iron. It rips through sheet metal like no tomorrow. And by the way, I tested my dimond wheel out today on PVC. All I can say is overkill.

I'm happy to say this thing just cut a hole puncher in half.
