Hey all

We seem to be getting quite a lot of server problems lately... it appears to be getting worse.

"500 Internal Server Error" - I'm sure you've all seen that one quite a bit lately. Plus the forum tends to be fairly slow sometimes.

Many double posts lately, too.
(just remember that if you get a server error when submitting a new post, check the forum or topic to see if your post has been submitted correctly, and 90% of the time you'll find that the post is there despite the error)

There are quite a few people that use this forum, and web hosting really is very cheap.

Perhaps we could open a small donation to the webmaster of the site to get some better hosting?

Just an idea...

-EDIT-

Ah, perfect example. I posted this, and received an Internal Server Error.
Checked the forum (took about 4 minutes just to get the page to load), and the thread had been created - but there was no post.

So I've had to reply (that's what this post is), and lucky for me I copied the original post to the clipboard.

Don't we already have a donation form or something? I've had a tonne of these errors pop up this month, compared to other times when I can go months on end without a single error.

They have a store that gives them a little money when people buy something from it...

I was just thinking a straight PayPal donation thing though, where a bunch of people might donate $5 or something.

Even in Australia hosting is relatively cheap, and in the US it's almost negligible.

But NH has quite a lot of members, and as such, uses up a lot of bandwidth!

So a little extra cash might be handy, I figure.

(it'd probably cost me about US$150 a year to host NF, but I don't have the data usage figures, so that number could be way off the mark).

But yes, the forum is slowly becoming unusable :(

Whom is actually paying for the site, again? It might not be any of my business, but I'm not sure if CX is still paying, or what.

Damn it Foamfoot. Why is it that you kill every good topic with a retarded response a few days late.

Ah, I think it's the search feature that's slowing down the forum. Especially when the "search entire post" option is selected.

CX and VACC are the current site owners, and if a significant amount of people donate even a dollar, it would help a lot. I'd be willing to chip in on that.

The most you can do is follow the errors advice and Report the error to the Administrator of the web server (cxwq). The more error reports, the more he will notice that his equipment may just need a slight upgrade to stay ahead of NH's growing population.

I've already stated this. I guess you can also throw in your money to help out with paying, but I'm pretty sure that some small hardware upgrades should take care of these. Or a software upgrade to something a little less "resource wasting"

What kind of "small hardware upgrade" are you referring to? I don't believe CX is paying for a dedicated server, especially not one he can modify the hardware configuration of.

A 500 server error usually occurs when memory limits are expanded illegally (Based on the host rules). An upgrade to a dedicated server would solve this, but I was under the impression that Cx was running this in his house. Maybe I was wrong.

In general, at some point, we (NH) will need some upgrade. That may be upgrading to a more optimized and secured version of IPB, or getting a new hosting option to allow for our growth. Any edge we can get right now in the software area will only be temporary though. We will keep growing, and if we don't move to a server that can handle the increase, these errors will just get more frequent.

Probably too many people on the site... Sever couldn't handle it... It crashed. Now it is back up. End of story.
