www.quakelive.com

If you haven't heard, Quake Live is a free, web-browser based, multiplayer fps game based of Quake III. You still have to download something, although I'm not sure what because you have to wait in line for the download to start.

Anyways, it should be pretty fun, and it's free! Just thought I would spread the word.

Edit: It looks like the servers down already, too bad.

Yeah, you have to download a plugin for your browser. It's currently Windows-only.

So stop with all the "new Recon" crap. This thing definately isn't a Recon, I'll wager my soul. Someone can quote me on that if they'd like

Why couldn't they get mirrors or make a torrent? I'm not bothering.

A little more info...

The Queue isn't just for downloading the plug-in, you'll have to wait in line to get to the site the first time you sign in to help keep the servers from getting flooded (remember, it's still in beta).

Your first game will be a test match against a computer while a few extra things download in the background. Supposedly this will place you at the appropriate level in the new matchmaking system. First you have to show off some of your 1337 fps skillz (jumping and rocket jumping, although I didn't know what to do for the third), then you'll do a 1 vs 1 against the computer. Everything ran peachy keen and silky smooth on my computer. After I finished up that match I had to restart due to an unrelated windows update, so that's all I've got so far.

The queue for me finished 2 times but I never got the confirmation email. I just switched the email and I got the email from Quake Live. Now I have to wait for another queue. I am so excited.... ;)

I played it, its pretty fun but I don't like the waiting in line thing. The only problem I ever got was my cursor didn't switch to the game cursor.

You shouldn't have to wait in line after the first two times.

I've been trying to keep tabs on this, it has been in development for a while now, and just now went to open beta this past week, I believe. Not to mention it's Quake, not some half-assed Korean MMO with an item mall for real money. Obviously it will be a little hectic at first while everyone and their mother tries it.

Forget about ranges; range means nothing if your blaster is a giant rattle after three shots.

This game brings back some old memories. And the "1337 fps skills" are pretty much just that. There are three challenges. First, you have to get across a depression with only a tower it the center. If you can't beat that "challenge", uninstall Quake Live and return every FPS you ever bought. It's that simple. The next one gives you a rocket launcher and a cliff above you that you have to get to. If you've played any old school FPS games this should not be that hard. Last, you have a rocket launcher and a long hall with sliding doors at the end. The doors are times however, and running will not get you there in time. Just like last time, you have to use the rocket launcher. This challenge can be really frustrating if you don't know exactly what you have to do. Upon completing the final challenge you are told, "You're pretty damned good.' Prepare to face an expert level bot in a 1v1 match.

From what little multiplayer I've played, I have to say that I'm quite impressed. iD seems to have put a lot of effort porting this game. The only problem is that everyone, their little brother/sister, mom/dad and grandma twice removed is trying to download it and the servers weren't prepared to take the hit.

We're not discouraging people from joining a Nerf forum, we're discouraging them from joining this forum. It's an important distinction because, frankly, we don't give a shit. The Haven was created to escape the idiotic masses, now they're all here. -cxwq

I played it. It's okay if this actually was a decade ago, in which case i'd play it. The graphics and gameplay is just too outdated, and not like mario or megaman outdated, i mean 30 gig celeron PC outdated.
Just my thoughts.
