I have looked through some threads recently and I have found that there are many noobs posting pointless questions and other crap. Worse, members are resorting to flaming, when an admin could easily be notified. Admins must have other things to do besides go around the forums and swing the ban hammer. The solution, give everyone a less powerful hammer.

I'm thinking of a set up similar to the comment rating system on Youtube. It's simple, if someone posts something that shouldn't have been posted, rate the member down. If the member gets to many down ratings in a set period of time, they're suspended. The down ratings could clear out them selves out at certain points to prevent someone getting suspended for some less noobish acts over long periods of time, or because of necro-posters that have figured the system out.
What do you think?

It is a good idea, but it would take some work to set up. There could be little flaws, there could be many. The concept sounds good, but in use it might not work as well. I would support the set up of this system, at least to try it out.

I'm a big fan of leading by example.

The reason I don't have many posts is because I tend to stay out of threads that are inevitably going to end in someone being flamed and admins being extremely pissed off. The other reason is I only post if I have something worth posting.

Your plan sounds good in theory, but I doubt everyone would maturely mark a point in a thread when it's so much easier for them to just flame the guy.

Also, I see the potential for misuse. If someone really doesn't like someone, what's stopping him from marking a point against him for no reason?

No. Rating systems on other websites have failed. People would just rate someone down and down just to be "funny" to try to get them banned. It would not work and a lot of people would get banned that shouldn't. I would suggest just letting the admins do their jobs. I have not seen anyone who should be banned that the admins did not take care of. We don't need the entire NIC backseat moderating.

Ideas like this surface a lot around here. The admins will never do it. They and only they can and should wield the all might ban hammer. It is a decent idea but, it will never be put into action.

The admins here do a great job managing the site. A system that allows anyone to negatively affect ones reputation or membership on this site will be badly abused. People will rate down others to be funny (like jackster said) or as revenge/payback (for flames, failure to pay for something, ect.

The people who would abuse this power would be the noobs. Noobs that post "wat are teh best nerf loser riflez (wrote sn1per on purpose) and "how do i moddify teh lonshots" threads, would get flamed to death and get very pissed because of the flames. They would most likely proceed to rate down everyone who critized them.

Any troll that makes it to this site might proceed to give random members bad marks.

We would be best off leaving things the way they are.

I feel the same as most people. This might be good in theory, but it would be bad in the long run. For example, look at Forsaken's LS Contract thread. I posted my opinion and a bunch of people jumped all over me for it saying that I need to stop bashing Forsaken and other stuff when all I did was post an honest opinion. Because so many people got offended, I probably would have been suspended for no reason.

As durka said, Allowing Anyone to bash someone's rep to the point of suspension probably isint the best idea for NH. If the mods could work out some other form of this, It could work.

Off topic: Vacc ftw.

For those who say that a vote could be misused, the vote would only work if a significant amount of members vote negatively. The vote wouldn't be counted as a reputation system ether. The votes don't have to be displayed.

You guys have totally missed the karma system posted multiple times in this sub-forum.

Plus, you missed that the karma system is EXACTLY this.

EDIT: NOTE: THESE POSTS ARE OLD, CONTRIBUTE OR SO NOT POST IN THEM: The karma system and: Riff. Riff. Riffs off of it.

What we should do!

I agree with SGM.

Spend 5 minutes browsing these forums and its obvious which members know the system and are respected, and which ones aren't.

Lurk moar, methinks.

What we should do!

Thats not a bad idea. The tribal council doesn't delegate power to the noobs or just anyone. Its pretty much just taking all the members opinions into consideration, while still limiting the ban hammer to the admins. \

Another thing we could try would be to give a lesser ban hammer (say a maximum ban of a week or two) to members who have shown maturity, have seniority, and have contributed to the site. The admins would have power to remove this lesser ban hammer.

No. Just...no.

Delegating more power won't do anything. Plus, if something goes wrong, that would essentially be giving more shit for us to do in order to fix it.

Off Topic: Nerfer327, your nose is covered in Vacc's shit.

Off topic: Vacc ftw.

On Topic: I really like the idea but it would definately not work unless the admins came up with a little twist on the system. Like everyone else, good in theory, bad in practice.

I also agree with SGM. If this is a rule, it will not be fair. Just because someone doesn't like another member, they will rate them low, and if someone likes a member, they will rate them high. The whole thing will turn into a popularity contest.

I wasn't trying to call you out on it. I was just pointing out the situation, and even if you wouldn't try to suspend me, I'm sure that other people would. Anyway, this thread will probably be closed soon because neither the admins nor members want to this to come about, it seems.

I actually find it funny how you seem like an ass in those threads and have to defend yourself...newer members probably would have gotten you banned. We don't need good people getting banned for stuff like this.

....and again: the admins have spoken on this sort of thing before and either they decided that we don't need it, or that it would be too much work.

My opinion; We don't need a karma system. The one we have is just fine: you follow the rules and don't get punished.

Guys, this is over.

Unless the administrators wish to try again, WE can't do anything.

Look at the older threads or just SEARCH BEFORE YOU POST.

Damn, almost all the posts in this thread violate the CoC.

Including my two for backseat moderating.

This is not directed at any one member in particular, but is a commentary.

NerfHaven is NOT a democracy. You don't have it your way here.

If you don't like what you're reading, go to the other Nerf sites (of which NHQ is trying to clean things up on their own, too).

If you don't like how we're moderating the boards, PM one of us. Don't try doing it yourself, as it doesn't help matters out at all.

If you don't like what you see posted, DON'T POST ANYTHING ABOUT IT. Just skip it on over and one of the team will eventually find it; it didn't affect your life, so any comments basically just add to the mucking of the offending thread and communicate to the other members how much of an ass you are.

If you think that we like to play games with feigned ignorance and stupidity, you've seen the examples we make of those who want to "test" us. We're patient.... on our terms.

There are two site owners who pay the bills around here. It's THEIR world. If they want all avatars to become pink bunnies, so be it. If they want to eliminate sigs (we already disallow pictures in sigs), so be it. If they want to shut this board down, so be it.

Let's not forget that a NerfHaven membership is a privilege. An easily revocable one. I think I've said that so many times I actually believe it now.
