I found a second-gen (blue/yellow) NiteFinder at my local thrift store for $1.00. Actually, I found two of them, the other is green and grey. Anyway, I wanted to do something with at least one of them. First, I cut down the shell to minimize the blaster, then I filled in the gap between the two shell parts in the front with a boatload of hot glue.

After each successive layer of glue, I cut down the centre to make sure that the glue wasn't sticking together. I wanted to make sure the two halves of the shell would come apart. After I filled in the space, I cut and sanded down the glue wall to be more even with the rest of the shell.

If you are following along, it's important to make sure that you don't fill in too much space with hot glue. Right where the blue part of the shell meets the yellow is a screw housing where the plunger tube attaches to the shell, so make sure you don't go past that point with your glue.

Internally, I removed the post and air restrictor (which you can probably find a writeup for somewhere around here, there are tons of them floating around NH), then stuck a small nub of 1/2" CPVC into a 1/2" CPVC coupler and sealed it in place with some super glue. I then stuck the nub of CPVC onto the plunger tube with Plumber's Goop. Nothing too complicated or impressive.

I replaced the stock NF spring with an Everbilt spring cut down to the same length of the stock spring. (You can buy the replacement springs at Home Depot in packs of two.)

Posted Image

Once all of that was done, I put everything back in place to make sure it would all fit. Here are the modified internals in the shell, with some added foam backer rod for noise reduction.

Posted Image

I hand-painted the shell after all of the internal mods were completed, following the same technique I used when painting The Gremlin. The NF doesn't have much space for graphics, and I wanted to keep the colour scheme clean and simple, so I just went with a simple thunderbolt symbol where the NERF insignia used to be.

Total painting time: 4 hours

I think the gap between the two shell halves could have been filled more cleanly with Squadron putty, but I had to work with what I had available.

Posted Image

As always, priming handle and coupler painted orange. I just like them better that way, I'm not sure why exactly.

I haven't had a chance to do range tests for it, so I apologize for ranges being unavailable at the moment. I have been quite busy with classes and other things lately. I may have a chance to do a few indoor tests this weekend, though, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Questions? Comments? Flames about there being too many NF writeups already?

Why did you have to make me piss my pants AGAIN, from your beautiful paintjobs? I'm sorry, I just LOVE it.

That is a very nice paint job, I really like the lightning bolt on the side. I am looking forward to seeing the ranges on that beauty.

All of my spring pistols use an everbilt spring. With a 6 inch CPVC rear loaded barrel you should get 50+ feet flat. Awesome paint job, not exactly worn, I'd have to say that the gun looks aged, like when you soak paper in tea to make it look old.

Very appealing to my eyes.

How the fuck did that only take you four hours? It takes me two to paint one 40k Orc.
Still, mad props on the gun. I love all of your paintjobs, and I hope that you continue to impress us all with them.

I love the blue; I love the black, but I hate the yellow. You still did a great job painting. I just don't like that color. It is nice to see someone else filling in big, open spaces on the blasters though. I don't like minimized blasters with holes all over. Again, good work.

Wow, I really need to get active here again. I've never even seen you before.
Damn, I've been out of nerf for too fucking long. This is beautiful. *sheds tear*

It's not like that. I put lube on it and its the same. Its just stuck. And when I cock it back it goes farther back then usual. Also I push as hard as I can and it wont go back in. I've tried the methods and they wont work. Also pics are up.

I'm too smart to start a topic on this...
You don't need to reinforce an NF to use a replacement spring, eh? Good news. Next time I'm at ace I'll get a No 49 spring.

Nice mod & PJ man. I used an EaB spring in mine. It tops every other NF we have at our wars.

Ranges with 1-3/4" split shot stefans averaged about 60' indoors. This thing packs quite a punch.

I have a question that I hope someone can answer. I had bought a second generation Nitefinder from my friend for three dollars. I'm new to nerf, so I'm hoping someone can tell me the pros/cons of earlier Nitefinders? Is it the nicer stock paint (I hate the yellow/black) and should I buy his other two? Oh and you just showed me I have to mess with mine once again. Nice mod.

I believe the earlier ones have stronger stock springs.

The first gen. nf has a stronger spring and larger plunger tube than all the rest. All other NFs are identical except for the color.
