I do have enough smarts to make a homemade but I want to know if they're as good as I hear they are.

Could you leave this any more open ended? Bottom line is that other than a SNAPbow or SNAP, there are no homemades you can make for under $50 that are widely accepted as being war-safe.

Buy a Big Blast or Big Bad Bow and modify it. Use the $40 to buy the supplies needed to make stefans.

Now stop making the mistake of asking other people what you should do with your money.

Mods are cheaper and far easier for newbs.

My advice would be to stick with mods, not homemades until you're really confident.

If you were to make a homemade, a simple ball valve gun with a small pressure chamber is easy and cheap.
