Oh and sandpaper.
I use 60 and 80 grit for removing logos.
I use 150 for scuffing the surface of some of the hard plastic (the orange parts) so paint will stick.
And I use 2000 for a light scuffing of the overall gun.

If your going for a realistic gun you should add colorIf I'm going for a really matte black should I use a clearcoat?
I don't think matte finishes warrant clear, but I think they do sell matte sealer. Might try that?

The matte clearcoat won't be shiny at all, but it will make flat black paint shinier looking than paint without the coating.

If you go this route, I would recommend that you first spray on a clear coat of gloss and then when that is dry, spray on the Dullcote.
Dullcote can be expensive ($3 - $5) and comes in a small spray can, but most commercial matte finishes are still semi-gloss or have a reflective sheen to them. I regularly use the two clear coat protection on miniatures that I have painted and it works really well.

That was because it was 1 post away from yours in the unread topics postings.
Vinyl "dye" or coating rather is a spray on made by duplicolor. It can be found in auto parts stores most commonly as it is used to restore color to pleather and other interior parts on a car. Aside from nerf guns I've used it to recolor the entire interior of my old 240sx. worked great.
Perez- there is not a gunmetal vinyl dye but Krylon fusions in nickle mirror is about as close to a metalic they have. I would suggest getting some acrylic paint in that color and trying your hand at hand painting.
