I'm not familiar with vinyl dye, but one my paint it says that sanding isn't needed. Maybe you could check there. I don't think you ever NEED to do it, but your results will probably turn out better if you do sand.

Sand lightly with 300 grit sandpaper to get the sheen off of the stock paintjob, and then be sure to wipe it down with a damp rag before painting.

From using Vinyl on a few guns, I found that by not sanding it can come off easy if you drop the gun or hit it against something by accident. Even if you do sand it can still come off. On my guns I have used 400 grit sandpaper with success. It takes off the gloss but will not leave scratches on the plastic.

If your going to paint orange parts that is another story. It is some kind of other plastic that is hard to paint and you have to sand that extra. The cocking handle of the Nite Finder is one example. I always see the paint chip off of that because it is a moving part and it's made of the orange plastic. Use something like 100 grit for orange and moving parts.

Rustoleum makes a primer specifically for plastics. I wipe down the item with lacquer thinner, let that dry, then use the plastic primer. Once that dries you can hit it with whatever color you want.

Vinyl Dye isn't PAINT, it is a dye. Hence the name.
IF the surface of the plastic is very smooth, you will get a much deeper color setting if you do some light sanding. A very glossy surface plastic also has a tendency to allow the vinyl dye to bead up really quickly.

For sure a light sanding is a good idea. I go the chemical route. A little acetone rub down to open up the surface of the plastic. Gotta be careful not to rub too hard or you will scuff the plastic.

Goof off works pretty good too.

Ok thanks everybody, I appreciate the input. I have decided to sand my gun with something higher than 400 grit, although i still am slightly unsure how to go about doing it. How am i supposed to sand the hard to reach places and all the grooves and what not?

For the really hard places that you simply cannot get sandpaper in at a decent angle you should take the chem route. A q-tip or large swab with a little goof off on it will take care of the job. If you are just trying to open up the surface of the plastic then for sure use a high # grit. 400+ should be good. Tho if you wanna diddle the embossed logos off a orbital with some 60-80 grit kicks much ass.

I sugest just using common sence, from what the rest of the members had said, sand the gun.
