First of all, I would like to say hello. This is my first post and I'm completely new to Nerf modding. Despite the warnings on this site, I decided to make my first mods to a Longshot rifle. Upon a recent trip back home, I discovered that my little brother was participating in Nerf wars and I decided I wanted to make him a really nice rifle for Christmas. So far I have (1) added a a second spring to the Longshot; (2) added a second 1" O-Ring to the plunger; and (3) removed the air restrictor.

While I think those improvements have definitely made a difference, I want to do more. I need to keep the gun functioning as "stock" as possible while still making performance improvements. In other words: I need to use the original magazines, original "streamline" darts, and the bipod has to stay. I have done a lot or reading on NerfHaven and have read about barrel replacements (brass and PETG) and different methods of creating a better seal in the breech. However, I can't seem to figure out which of these mods are appropriate for a rifle that will be using the stock ammunition and stock magazine. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Are there other modifications I should consider to improve the range/accuracy of this gun?

I hope this post was up to NerfHaven standards; please, go easy on me. Thanks in advance and I can't wait to share the finished product with you all!

There's not much to do other than you already have. Unfortuantely, you can't keep a gun 'as stock as possible' and modify it at the same time. You pretty much got the internals down, but I would suggest to reinforce the boltsled and catch so your little bro doesn't get pissed when it breaks. You can use epoxy putty, strips of sheet metal (or aluminum in my case).

The other option would be to integrate the gun that attachs to the front and swithc out the bipods for an extra shot. The gun weighs 2 pounds AT MOST when it has an Angel Breech and other shit on it, so you don't need a bipod.

Cosmetic modifications would be a great way to keep everything stock so paint it whatever...you could add sights instead of the worthless scope, or you could buy shotgun grip from hereitcorp. You choose what you want to do

I've got some paint ready, but I wanted to finish doing modifications first. Do you have a link to any information about reinforcing the boltsled and catch? I obviously don't want to keep the gun stock, but I do want to continue to improve performance. I suppose I am most interested in any barrel replacements and ways to seal up the breech while still maintaining the functionality of the magazines and stock ammo.

If you're keeping stock ammo, there is not much need to try for better accuracy. Streamlines are one of the most inaccurate types of stock ammo, so if you want more accuracy, you should start with modifying the darts. Even doing things like putting a little hot glue in the tip of the dart or cutting the rubber done off will improve accuracy quite a bit.

I am not new to modding, but I am new to the longshot. I have yet to mod my own longshot. But if you goal is just to keep the stock look I'll offer some suggestions as that is my plan as well. After air restrictors its important to make sure you got the right kind of springs, adding an industrial is prolly best, but using a BBB spring with the longshot spring works good too. Then you really need to use stefan darts. They are really easy to make, I make 100 at a time and they last quite a while for me. It is popular to take off the shoulder stock, and moddify the magazine to load 12 darts. I personally thing the bipod is ridiculous and you lil bro would absolutely love is if you popped that off and added a shotgun grip. Not to mention if your lil bro is fairly young, it is a lot easier to cock the gun with a shotgun grip. The other thing that is great to do is give you lil bro a sight for it, and turn the one it comes with into and attachable gun. I'm planning to put the switch shot into my stock scope. Thats 2 extra shots for the gun with that addition. (one with the front gun, and one with scope) I don't think that a new barrel will help you all that much unless you shoot stefans though.

Thats all I got.

You can cut your streamlines down and do an Angel Breech although I didn't before (I SUCK TOO MUCH).

Quick update on the rifle: It's nearing completion. I still have to paint it, but I've painted a few smaller parts (charger handle and scope). The paint is a flat black textured paint. It is really great because it's designed for plastics and provides a lot of extra grip. Once I paint the rifle black, I'm going to go back in with some metallic paint and a sponge brush to do some detailing.

I think it's coming along well for my first mod -- it shoots incredibly far and straight. Some of you may notice a little red button mounted under the trigger. That button is hooked up to a battery harness and a laser diode mounted inside the gun underneath the barrel (a/k/a laser sight)! So far, I have done the following:

Added a second spring (4" long x 7/8" diameter x .080 gauge wire)
Removed the air restrictor
Added a new o-ring and re-lubed the entire piston chamber
Sealed nearly all of the air leaks in the breech
Replaced the original barrel with a 12" aluminum barrel (stock breech/magazine system left unmodified)
Installed a red laser sight inside of the gun and underneath the barrel (AAA battery harness inside of handle; push button switch underneath trigger)

I'm sure there are a few other things I have done, but that's all I can think of right now. Thanks to everyone for all of the help I've found on the site! I've done quite a few things different from any write up I've seen; I'll be sure to post these procedures when I finish.

If I were you, I'd stop and think a bit about the color scheme you are proposing.

You are making this Longshot for your younger brother, who participates in Nerf wars, most likely with neighborhood and/or school friends, correct? You are proposing to paint it flat black, with metallic highlights, which will, in effect, take a gun that has been modelled to look rather realistic, and add a realistic looking color scheme to said gun. You've already removed most of the "safety orange" from the gun, especially the front.

Now, imagine your younger brother is out nerfing with his new, black & metallic Nerf rifle. He's sneaking around in the bushes, trying to outflank the opposition. He takes aim at a fellow nerfer, when he is spotted by a policeman - who sees a kid with a rifle, hiding in the bushes, aiming it at other kids.

We've all watched the news, we all know what the policeman is going to think, and we know that, regardless of what happens, someone is going to end up very unhappy.

These are Nerf blasters - they are supposed to be fun. Don't make them look real.

PUT SOME BRIGHT, FLASHY COLORS ON THE BLASTER TO KEEP YOUR BROTHER SAFE!!!!!

Take a look through this thread to see lots of bright, flashy and eye-catching paintjobs that can look just as good as "realistic black & metallic". (Note that the thread is very long, and the more recent, and often better, paintjobs are towards the end of the thread.)

My younger brother is a 23 year old video game programmer that engages in Nerf wars in their large indoor studio -- I'm not too worried about it. However, I completely agree with you in most cases. Also, I have a bright orange plug for the barrel when he transports it from his car to the building.

Does that mean the safety helmet is out?

You seem pretty good at modding already, You have a positive attitude that SUCKS! (just kidding  )
The only other thing I can see you doing is making the barrel a little tighter using 1/2 inch COPPER. You really need a guide to do this though, since I messed up doing it

Install a brass breach.(refer to ForsakenAngel) It greatly increases range but is a very complicated mod. If you have a friend that has completed that mod consult them first

I would add a double mag. It keeps the gun pretty stock and it looks cool. You pretty much got everything down on that gun already.
