I've recently found myself to be playing a hell of a lot of First Person (and occationaly third person) Shoooter games for PC. There have been so damn many good ones out lately, and there are more on the way, so I was wondering what everyone's favorites are, and which ones they are looking forward to. One's I've played recently are:

Mafia
NOLF 2
Americas Army (a genre unto itself)
Delta Force: Black Hawk Down demo
Raven Shield demo
Battlefield 1942 demo

I'm looking forward to Splinter Cell, Raven Shield, DF:BHD (above), Hitman 2 (it's out, I haven't gotten to play it yet), Project IGI: 2, there are probably more that I can't think of right now.

Anway, so what do you think of the genre and the games?

What's really sad, is that FPS games are the only ones I can really pick up and play. And between you and me, they are the only ones I actually excel at. Some of my favorites include the Medal of Honor series, Unreal Tournament, Perfect Dark, Red Faction, all those fun filled gore fests keep me content and killing. Then their's the classics, like GoldenEye and Wolfenstein. Nothing will ever defeat the thrill of casually shooting hundreds (upon hundreds) of Nazis and Soviets.

Yeah...well said, Evil. My favorite genre of all time is the First Person Shooter. My favorite games are:

Quake 2
Quake 3 Arena
Unreal Tournement: 2003
Half-Life (Counter-Strike, Natural-Selection, Team Fortress Classic)
Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Yeah...iD Software basically owns me. But hey, their games are quality in my eyes. I used to be ranked within the top 10 players of the MSN gaming zone for the Quake 2 demo a long time ago, in another life, and my fondest memories of online gaming still come from those days of me hanging out with my buddies on a server, playing all-day during the Summer. I believe and FPS game is what you make it, not what it makes you; you can really learn alot about yourself from an FPS game.

Yeah, I got quite obsessed with Half-life: Firearms, for a long while. Then I realized that it was all a disguised Point-Click game, and decided to turn it off, start thinking for myself. :D

I'm with Groove on this one. I've been a Quaker since I first played the shareware version of Quake. I remember the Mouser Revolution, back when there still existed keyboard-enthusiast people who refused to use the mouse for looking around. Felt that it complicated things. I still say Team Fortress is best played with Quake physics; don't give me none o' that Half Life: TFC crap. Quake II was cool. Revolutionary graphics engine and great design, though for gameplay purposes, my least favorite of the series. Just seemed a bit unresponsive as compared to the first, ie, there was a hearty delay between the time one hit the Fire button and the time the gun actually fired. Quake III, though still second in my eye to Classic Quake, is one of the greatest games of all time. Amazing level design, great weapons, wonderfully customizable, cross-platform (important for Linux-geeks like myself), and just lots of fun to play. While I'm up at school, it's the only game that my buddy's and I play persistently; other games are lucky to last two weeks of scrutiny from us.

Well, that's my rant, anyway.

Counter-Strike......... no, no, shut-up......... Counter-Strike. Why? Because All your Base are belong to Us. I know, it's from Tribes originally (some of you might not have known that), but Counter-Strike made it a household saying. I don't wanna hear any shit about how there's no skill and the low ping always wins, I play on a 56k and always find myself in the upper half of the standings when all is said and done. So in closing, Counter-Strike. Eat it.

007: Agent under Fire and 007: Nightfire are my current fixes. I played Counter Strike for a while, but that was on a vacation so I haven't played in a while. I'm not to good but I also like Golden Eye and Quake II for N64.
F.P.S. is a favorite. I also like F.P.S. driving games, particullary Battle Tanx: Global Asault for 64.

Nightfire blows Agent Under Fire away. Nightfire is much, much better. I really enjoy the mini-helicopters and some of the weapons.

Agreed. I like placing more than enough stupid bots at pheonix base and destroying them with the chopper. My favorithe weapon is the samurai, or the covert/tacticle loser. I perfer long range combat, if it's not obvious.

Sentinel all the way baby! Guided missles rock! I like playing the first multiplayer, which the name escapes me, but it's quite open and large.

Right now I'm playing:

Battlefield 1942 (I usually get in the top three players :D)
Soldier of Fortune II Demo (I'm hoping to get the game soon)
Ghost Recon

That's about it. I have to add that No One Lives Forever is one of the most enjoyable games I've ever played though.

I play a bit of CS still, and some Battlefield 1942. I've really been getting into console games more lately. I'm hooked on Vice City and both new Metroids.

I've been playing Cs a tad.. but frankly, I think FA is a much better game. It's probably because I can get more kills than deaths in FA.. unlike CS...

I mostly just play FA.

*deep breath*... Unreal, UT, UT2k3, SoF, SoFII, Tac-Ops, Project IGI, Operation Flashpoint, Quake + Q2, JK 2 : Jedi Outkast, Serious Sam + SS2, Deus Ex, Doom, NOLF, all the Half Lifes, (all the rainbow 6 games, and they we're all utter SHIT) RtCW and finally, Red Faction.

Cs is a pile of shit, Tac-Ops OWNZ Cs, and I'd rather eat bleach coated, cyanide razor blades than play an FPS on a console. Ugh! Cannot stand them, the polygons are so jagged I feel like I could cut myself on them.

I really want Theif. Mine got all scratched, and I miss it :D

Yeah, I'll shut up now.

Ok, now if Counter-Strike isn't your cup o' freakin tea.... that's cool. But Tac Ops?? I respect Rainbow 6 fans.... they are excellent games that deliver solid action and they actually require thinking and planning, I personally prefer the more immediate action of CS but the Rainbows are nice for change. SoF? Ok... you like the gory stuff... personally though I wouldn't consider SoF to be Team Based or Realistic at all so it kinda turns me off. But Tac Ops?? Dude... Tac Ops blows... hard.. I played a demo once, it looked nice but it's a ping-based game. No skill, no thought, no planning, lowest ping wins... period. And if you say CS is the same I'll fuckin kill you. I'm a 56k man and I still consistently rank in the top 40%. Now some people bitch and moan that they always die as many times as they get a kill. Well guess what? It means you're perfectly average. Not everyone can be of some amazing caliber that you can go 20 and 5... the ODDS are that you're just not that good. Now if I can go 15 and 8... I'm happy... the rare occassion that I go like 20 and 6... I just assume that everyone else on the server blows.

I dunno, maybe you're all about the twitch games.... so yeah, UT and UT2k and all that shit is great for you. But Tac Ops is a twitchers BS excuse trying to pretend that they like strategy too. Every game you said is crap requires thinking... .. just wanted to point that out.

Wow, now that's some major bashing of CS. I replaced all my models, and my video mode is 1024x768. Those polys look pretty damn smooth to me...

...Oh, and Famine, we should play CS together sometime in the near future.

I go by the name Phalanx* I usually drift between Recongamer and PHHX.net servers.... but yeah, I've been having a few problems with my phone lines lately (see my Code Orange post) but once that's smoothed out we'll have to pick a server meet up at... hell maybe we could get a fellow Nerfer to host a locked server and have Nerfers only CS match... that would be a nice idea.

If I was talented at writing I would creat an "Ode to the Mac Gamer", but I am not so I wont try. You Wintel people have you CS all the mac has is Tac-Ops... unless you count that Global Ops. game comeing out. Any one played that? Other Fps... Deus Ex! and when it comes out Deus Ex II... now that is gonna be sweet. Probably the best Physics engine seen to date. And the graphics could be clamed to rival Doom 3(did I just say that! I think that coment will get some nasty replys). But I would have to say that we are in a famin of new FPS, but the Horizon looks good!

Meh, thinking in FPS is not for me. I prefer quick, funny violence, arcade style. TimeSplitters 2 is simply awesome. All those monkeys running around on fire. Its just awesome. Although you guys might prefer more strategy and thinking, arcade type games on TS2 are just awesome. You never have to think.
