I had the same problem a while ago. Check the reply about the tortion spring that is what is wrong.

This IS your problem, or at least the only possibility that you can fix from what you have said, and I am not adept at explaining it to you.

I deleted the first set of pictures but, I guess this is a more common problem than I thought. You want the ratchet facing back towards your hand with the curve pointing up. The tortion spring should make a backwards "C" and the short end should fit into the notch in the ratchet.
