Okay, so after reading this forum religously for about 4 months, it has become very, very obvious to me that for a low power gun: copper bbs, for a medium power gun: 1/4" steel shot bbs, and for a high power gun: 3/0 lead fishing weights. So copper bb's have been working fine for me out of all my guns (all pistols). Recently, however, I aquired a couple of AT3K's and an SS2 from thrift stores (and a SF I recieved about an hour ago to mod for a friend that we realized he had. I'm guessing after I mod it and he pays me for materials, he will love it for a week, then never use it, and decide to sell it to me for a discount from the usual 60 bucks they go for :D . I hope at least.)

/gloating

Anywho, After modding my AT3K's cxwq style, just for fun I fired copper bb weighted stefans out of them. Very impressive speed and accuracy. I then shot out 1/4" steel shot weighted stefans. Same accuracy but signifigantly lower speed. I thought, hmm, well I be the lighter stefans won't hold up outside. So I go shoot outside, and it is fairly windy, mind you. Still great range and accuracy. Then I shot the heavier ones. Hella dart drop.

So I ask you all, what the fuck? Are my copper bbs just godly, or why does everyone use heavier weighted darts? I understand for accuracy, but for me, the copper bb weighted stefans are just as accurate.

1/4" steel shot weighs almost 2X as much as a 3/0 splitshot.

A AT3k isn't a horribly powerful gun that would need 1/4" steelshot.
You might try using some with 3/0 splitshot. and see if that works a little better then the bb weighted.

Are you serious!? Fuck! Wish I'd known that before ordering 15 bucks worth of BBs off of Amazon! I feel like a complete retard. That's really weird though, because I remember cx himself writing what I said in the beginning about what weights to use for which guns.

Edit: when you say 1/4" steel shot, your talking about slingshot bbs, right? Also, 3/0 split shot weights are meant for fishing, right?

Yeah, 1/4" steel shot are used for slingshot ammo. And yes, 3/0 split shot are fishing weights. One thing to keep in mind: fishing weights tend to be made of lead. Lead bad. I personally have no intention of ever using it for darts. You can buy non-toxic fishing weights made of tungsten or other similar heavy materials, but my guess is that they'd be on the expensive side of things.

EDIT: Just realised you've already tried using them in an AT3k.
I'd use them more myself but I can't find a steady/affordable supplier in Adelaide.

Also, I've handled 1000's of splitshot weights for my stefans, with bare fingers. I've only had 5 incidents of lead related cancer so far. It's not that bad.

Not really. The lead's fine. just wash your hands, or if you're that cautious just wear latex gloves.

They sell 30 non-toxic 3/0 weights at walmart for under a dollar. They weigh the same (I think) I would recommend them, they go at least 5 feet longer than my washer darts.

There is nothing wrong with using lead for your weights unless you are ALREADY retarded and lick your fingers after making your stefans with the lead weight.

once the dart is made the hotglue seals in the lead so it no longer is an issue unless you chew your darts.-(That means keep them away from your little brothers and sisters.)

Since I make a few hundred at a time I do use a latex glove on the hand that is handling the weight.

I actually DO lick my fingers after putting the weight in, so as to cool and shape the hot glue with it.

I've been using 1 copper BB in all of my stefans and they work fine in my at2k.

Remember that the dome of hotglue adds a lot of extra weight too.

Oh boy... Why do you do that? Stop doing that.
Gravity shapes the dome for you so long as you have the dart held up in place while it cools.

I recently ate few fishing weights. I'm fine, but I wouldn't condone it.

Okay lemme get this straight.

Order of weight, lightest to heaviest:

-copper bbs
-CS washers
-3/0 fishing weights
-1/4" steel shot

So would 3/0 fishing weights work well with a PETG'd AT3K?

You are correct on that. For your 3k they should work great.

I highly recommend CS #8 washer-weight felt darts for a 3k, they are extremely accurate, and I'm using a slightly tight barrel fit for them, cut that PETG between 6-8 inches (8 inches would probably be more optimal if you have a looser dart fit, and 6 inches vice versa).

I have used 3/0 weights, yes they are fishing weights, I've never gotten the same accuracy out of them though.

When speaking about a swallow, always make sure you know whether it is an African or European swallow. It is very important.
