You heard right. Tomorrow, Wal-Mart is having a HUGE sale on a limited supply of a certain Compaq laptop. Here is the article:
http://news.cnet.com...10086281-1.html

I am certainly waking up early to get one, seeing as I really need a laptop for school.

I just wanted to get the word out and let you guys know about this amazing deal. :)

Glad to Help!

I'm not the computer genius or anything, but I really wouldn't recommend a Compaq. Their customer service sucks and they are not really very hardy computers. But, don't let me spoil your decision, I just wanted to let you know.

Well I might buy this, because my computer is really outdated. And it is a Compaq.

Black Friday isn't tomorrow (seeing as how today is Friday and Thanksgiving hasn't happened yet).
And in order to get the laptop you would have to go to Wal-Mart...

On Black Friday...

Willingly...

To buy a Compaq...

So not worth it.

Especially when you can get spiffy little laptops like this one for $350.

Umm... that doesn't matter because the deal is tomorrow not on Black Friday. I'll certainly have to check this one out though, sounds interesting, nice link too Captain... I'd take that laptop because it has a solid state drive, but this is a particular case in which I wouldn't want a Linux OS. Why don't any marketers understand that just because a lot of people don't want bug-ridden Vista doesn't mean they can try and push Linux on us, I'm perfectly happy with Windows XP.

CS has it right. The Acer that he linked to is what I'm planning on getting, or at least a similar model. Of course this is when I get money.

And then I will finally be able to write programs in python wherever I may be!

I really don't know why anyone would buy any computer with only one gig of ram. Maybe I'm just a performance hog or I run too much shit on my machines, but I would never purchase another PC with less than three gigs. Not to rain on anybody's low-price parade, but it seems pretty nonsensical to buy something that will completely depreciate within a couple years.

That is probably true.
And everything will depreciate within a year. High end components will depreciate the most (usually up to a 50% reduction in value).

Depreciation aside, one gig of ram will be totally useless within a couple years and you'd definitely need to upgrade. Although it's easy to change/add most laptop's RAM, most people wouldn't be comfortable doing so.

I totally agree with Mr. CS and Mr. Rambo, you should heed his advice. But also, you get what you pay for. This applies to anything you will buy. Not saying it won't be a good computer or anything along those lines, but a 298 dollar laptop will perform like a 298 dollar laptop. Put that in you pipe and smoke it. :)

1) Why are you addressing people as "Mr."?
2) What advice did CaptainSlug give me that I should be listening to?

I have had my sad little 1GB of RAM since August '06 with no troubles yet. Unless you are running Vista, 3GB of RAM is completely overkill. I guess if you want to have 10 different games open all at once while surfing the net, you might need tons of RAM, but otherwise, it doesn't seem worth it.

Well, the machine I used to use at work ( web design/development firm ) had 1gb of RAM. Lemme tell you a couple things about that piece of shit:

1) It took at least four minutes to open a full-page web design PSD in Photoshop CS2 ( CS4 is dropping this month ) while running nothing else other than Firefox and Thunderbird on Windows XP.
2) Even after opening the aforementioned PSD, I would need to wait another few minutes to be able to use the interface.
3) If I wanted to use Dreamweaver ( again, CS2 ) for development ( which I didn't, but my coworkers did ) I would not be able to run Photoshop simultaneously. So this would mean that if I needed to refer back to the design I would have to save it out as a PNG, GIF, etc. and view it in Windows Picture Viewer. This made things exceptionally difficult in circumstances where I would need to measure the width of something or determine the hex of the color in the design.

Granted, not everyone is going to use Photoshop and/or Dreamweaver, but people mention video editing in another thread... good luck doing anything substansial on 1gb of RAM. Bottom line is: RAM IS CHEAP. The first match on laptop memory on Newegg today is 2gb for 30 bucks. To add a gig to a Dell system it costs $50, which is a little high in my opinion, but there's really no reason to skimp on your RAM if there's any kind of chance you want to do more than run basic communication and media apps.

Where's the follow-up?

Did you oversleep?
Were the lines too long?
Is it a POS?

Well, I didn't oversleep. I got to Wal-mart at 7 A.M. and there was a big line. Some people with blow up tents and chairs. It turned out my wal-mart only had 15 of them. I didn't get there early enough.

I really think it boils down to what you plan to use the netbook for.

For me, I only need four things; to do Word documents, do spreadsheets and schedules, net surf, and to check e-mail.

I don't know much about games, but isn't a 8.9 inch diagonal display a bit small for gaming and stuff?

That deal looks great, Sluggy. I'd like to get something like that for my wife to net-surf from the sofa instead of always sitting at the desk on this 10 year old desktop dinosaur.
